Can I just ask that people stop posting pictures of the Squire Jag. My next purchase has to be an amp and I don't want to get distracted go out get the Jag and have nothing to play it through.
Fender have always had a wide range and Squier have really got back in the game over the last couple of years. The MIM's have got better since the price hike and I am sure there is room for all. There's just a lot more choice for players these days and that is no bad thing
I entirely agree.

To have all the talent of Jaco or Marcus Miller. I'm not big fans of theirs but if you're going to have talent you may as well wish for as much as you can get.
Havnt been playing long but decided im gonna start from scratch,i can play bits of songs n stuff but think i should be better than i am,anyone any suggestions what i should be aiming to master first and set targets that would help me?

Cheers for the replies guys all good advice and yea thats why i persevere.....it is fun ,i love the Ibanez(cheers again Bassassin)...wife reckons im weird cos i keep lookin at it even when im not playing....its my new baby
You sound in a very similar situation to me, especially staring at your bass . I've been playing for approx a year (I owned a bass in my late teens but realise now that I never really knew how to play it ) and also find it difficult to figure where I should be in terms of what I should know - I can barely play a song without fluffing it at some point . Six months ago I decided to stop learning songs from tab sites because that seemed to be getting me no where, I was trying to play stuff that was simply beyond my level. Since then I've now gone back to basics, learning the notes on the fretboard and starting with simple theory and also attempting to start reading (reading is very difficult, it can take me half an hour to work out 4 bars sometimes, very embarrassing). I'm finding that by using and learning theory I am beginning to understand what I'm playing and that other elements of learning, ie rhythm, ears etc spring out of that. A lot depends on how much practice you put in of course as to where you should expect yourself to be after x amount of time. I've found that using theory and reading has made the other stuff easier to understand and make more sense. I'm not saying I've improved massively but I do feel I'm making progress. If none of that makes sense just remember what GonzoBass posted "Have fun"

Although I've never even touched one let alone played one I still don't want one. They look OK, but I just don't want one, but neither do I want a Fender. There are other basses out there that catch my eye and imagination more than a T-bird. Although I would have a Gibson EB-3, for some reason.
So Im not that weird I read on some forum that Fender Rumble series were not good; mind you, I have read that every amp under £5000 is either fantastic or rubbish. I guess one just has to go and try them out, but limited stock in this neck of the woods. FR looks solid enough. Might be another option. Hartke A70 looked a bit cheap and tacky close up, maybe the Hydrive is a bit more classy?
Us weirdo's must stick together.

Chris from Muse bobbing head thingy again!
No matter how good the player and how fabulous his kit is, when it comes to a live gig the bass sound FOH is only as good as the PA system and the engineer behind the desk. If Chris W's bass really is lacking in oomph, then all I can say is it's the first un-oomphy Status I've heard. Mine is oomphier than an oomph-monster swimming in a lake of oomph. Do I win a prize for Most Gratuitous Over-Use Of The Word 'Oomph'..?
I don't know, personally I think you got the balance just right. Oomph.!!!!!! -

It's certainly not a dumb question. You sound as if you are in exactly the same boat as me, limited space, limited budget so generally need an all singing all dancing combo. I also practice when the kids are in bed so headphones and cd input is a must. I've recently considered the Hartke Hydrive 112c, but at £450 it's obviously a tad expensive (as to is the Promethean from Ibanez at £500+ , but it is nice). On asking about the Hydrive the A100 was suggested to me here. Hartke Hydrive 112c thread I think you can them for a little over £250, and although a little over budget the 100w may sound small, but as in the thread and the reviews I've read it really does pack a punch. The Fender Rumble 100 is also damned loud, apparently. I visited a shop near me a couple months ago and the guy had one in there. I asked how loud it was, and he replied that someone tried it out the previous week and the sound 'thumped me in the chest' it was that loud. The owner was actually stood outside the shop have a sneaky fag at the time. Only setback is is that they aren't the smallest amps in the world. EDIT: must admit the choice is limited and can be frustrating.

I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking of because............I've never played a Fender. Oh the shame, I know, I'll leave now.
Oh there was a girl who my singer tried to hook me up with. Her name was Angela, she was all blonde hair and red lips and tits, and as dopey as you can imagine. This was in the USA, and she first asked me what I was doing over there (having just seen my band perform!). I told her I was working at McGuire air force base as a stunt pilot. "Oh really? Wow!" she cooed. I went on to tell her that I was an English Language graduate and to combine my two loves I became a specialist in skywriting, and that my post at McGuire was in order to teach the American pilots to punctuate correctly. Because cursive is fairly straightforward once you've got the hang of flying the plane, but semicolons are hard to write and often pilots who can write one don't know where it's appropriate to use it. Etc. She stood up to about half an hour of this before making her excuses and backing away.
that's brilliant. -
It will never sport any chrome, chrome is only for guitars
Tish, tish. I think you must have suffered a bump to your noggin' man.
I am very tempted to go for gold, as it were.
'Going for, going for, going for gold. ' All sing along now.

Gold NO! I think I might go with AH on this one and say Chrome, for possibly two reasons. First to carry on the 'shinny' theme with regard to the mirror scratch plate (you are having a mirror scratch aren't you? That is what you said? ) Second, it may look too similar to the fretless corvette.

Note to self. Do not buy the Daily Mirror on Saturday. Not that you ever do, stick to those broadsheets (not literally).

Look at the size of those frets! I bet it buzzes a lot.

Is a bass more aesthetically pleasing than a guitar?
I vote yes but there maybe more than a little natural bias on this site!
I can't imagine what you're talking about -
When I picked up the bass again last year, initially I didn't have an amp at all and in some instances it frustrated me as I couldn't hear what I was playing at all, so didn't know if I was playing correctly. But I haven't played un-amplified for ages now so don't know TBH-
White, black and gold?? How classy can one be?
Well, try it but if I don't like it you'll have to change it I like the body shape looks the business. The black one on this thread looks like the neck doesn't go very far into the body or am I not looking at it correctly? I must admit to preferring minimal and or sleek design or industrial. Nice review of the Rockbass always wondered what they were like.

You should be rightly chuffed with the new site Stuart. I had no problems at all with it, it looks great as well. I found your bio quite interesting. I remember those Axe ads and almost bought one. My first bass came from a small music shop that was in Litchdon Street (just off the square in Barnstaple?), can't remember what it was called. I remember the bass but not the shop's name that is. Transcriptions are good as well. It's always a treat to find transcripts you can rely on as accurate. Cheers Rich

Gold. Hmmmmmm. I'll need convincing.

In general, I have to say it really doesn't bother me. However, if it's causing the running of the site a problem that's something for admin et al to look into. In fact some of them are quite attractive.
Most of the room is taken with the profile stuff on the left. There aren't many sigs I've seen that go lower than that with a one line post. Except mine
Now, to you Nigel. Put it back how it was, if you can please. That just looks untidy. And your 'some leads and fingers' (or whatever it was) and Brum Brum, are missing, so you need to sort that out as well.

Is a bass more aesthetically pleasing than a guitar?
Basses headstocks just look better due to being less cluttered but having nice big bits of metal on them. I`ve got an Ibanez SR series and the whole thing is just gorgeous for a " cheap " bass, the Ibanez guitars just ain`t as damn pretty. I do love a big top horn too.....oooooeeerrr misses!!!!
Oooooh that's lovely. I've got a sparkly red one.
Simply NO.....SORRY I have many many many many in fact toooo many and hanging on a wall the telecaster or archtop look significantly more attractive....but maybe thats my feminine side All hate mail on a postcard to.......
Ah well telecasters are my weakness as well -
Brilliant thread EH. I've been following it for a while now. The furthest I would have got is to have drawn out a shoddy outline of a bass I might like (although it wouldn't have looked even close) and then thrown said drawing in the back of a draw with my 'dreams' and to-do list. All power to your power tools.

Is a bass more aesthetically pleasing than a guitar?
Marvin replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
If I walk into a music store I tend to find myself bypassing the guitars - unless there is something truly eye catching - and stand gawping at the basses. I know it's a generalisation thing but on the whole the long neck et al make it look a more elegant instrument, to me. Put a strat next to a P-bass, I go for the P-bass (although I do have a soft spot for Tele's, but not Tele basses, damn it I've screwed me own argument ). And who voted no? I'll find out and have you thrown to the mods
