When I was playing around yesterday, cutting the treble and boosting the mids I was quite happy with how 'bassy' it sounded. Previously, I always went immediately for loads of bass, virtually no mid and a bit of treble. It just had no definition. I just thought that was the tone I was looking for, but I was never happy with it. Obviously it's not for everyone, I'm quite happy though.

Did nothing for me I'm afraid. My playing is pretty poor, so I suppose most would expect me to be blown away by his technique, but no. It left me quite cold. Some of what he did sounded bl00dy horrid TBH. Perhaps as Bilbo highlighted, when his playing matures things may come together more.

The last time I went in there, rummaged through the picks and couldn't find any triangles. If, and that's a big if, I use a pick, I've only got some little Fender things. Either .73mm or .88mm. I don't like either. I prefer triangles but don't really like using a pick.

I posted a thread about tone several months ago. In it several posts referred to the mids in getting their tone, specifically cetera. Since Christmas I've been playing through a zoom pedal and got a little sidetracked, however this afternoon I was twiddling with my practice amp and remembered what cetera said about inverting the usual U shaped eq that many of us go for. And.......oh yes, push up those mids, turn down the bass and treble (but not too much) and what a difference. Literally a tone I've been looking for. Two problems though. The zoom pedal is not needed (although I suppose I could try and get the same result through it) and the amp I was using is only a 35w practice job so not really suited to anywhere outside the living room . I just wanted to share that. Don't forget those mids.

Did he do a song called 'version'? Sorry I couldn't resist, I'm a that sort of mood.

In the Midnight Hour. Very straight forward I know but I always find that when I have a crisis of confidence it helps to find something I can play, then it's back to normal service. I've got the transcript to My Girl. It's only a 2 1/2 mins (or abouts). I was playing it from transcript the other night to help my reading, but got lost every time I had to turn the page

Did you read his interview in BGM a few months ago. He claimed that his heavy drinking never effected his playing. I think perhaps it might have occasionally. Still an inspiration. The bass line is the only part of Sweet child I like.

I'm with you on the time. Where I am it's a veritable desert for any tuition. (I'm hoping someone will say I'm wrong at this juncture ie that there are no bass tutors in North Devon).

Having got back to playing only within the last 12 months after a long break my influences have changed, and I can't remember who they were when I was playing in my late teens early twenties. Now it's Andy Fraser when he was in Free. Great laid back grooves. And the Motown and soul grooves created by James Jamerson and Bob Babbit who is always overlooked.

I had a 2nd hand Hohner B2A (de-fretted) some years ago that had a similar problem and as WoT has eluded to it did buzz on some notes. Whoever had it before me must have really hammered the fretboard.
