I think it would feel just like it's normal home on the top of the bridge pickup on my bitza Jazz :-)
Well that's certainly better than some of the possible suggestions of where I could stick my thumb
 2. I couldn't play that there's nowhere to rest my thumb.
 3.
I'm a hit man and the missus is still alive.
I knew you'd let slip about what you did one day.
 4.
I think you just have to give those twiddy things on the headstock a bit of a twist. Mine was in tune when I bought it though so I'm not 100% sure.
May I also suggest a tuner, one of those electronic jobs or something similar. Tuning forks are so yesterday.
 5.
I'll play anything except pub trad. Ya know that "ooohh ahhh up the ra sh*te". I try to ply with as many musicians as possible. There is always something to learn.
Have you got the TAB for that?

 8.
I'll let you off because you're a cutie if your pic is anything to go by
Please don't, your making me blush. Blushing is embarrassing by it's very nature but even more so at my age
 9. A big thanks, now you've explained it it makes perfect sense. Cheers
 10. I don't know how well this attachment is going to work, but I'll give a go. It may not be readable. The last 4 bars, where it says chorus, there are the notes on the stave (which match those on the tab) but above these notes are what I can only describe as 'small notes'. Although it's probably way beyond what I need to know at the moment, I have a curious mind and need to know what these extra notes may be indicating. I'm that sort of person. Can anyone help please?
 11.
Does that mean I can get a pro from here to go do the exam for me?
You could always ask someone like Doddy or OTPJ They may be able to fix it into their schedule. Although they may get some strange looks if someone asks their name
 12. You have 3 things going for you that mean you need not worry (too much) 1. You 2. You have a tutor 3. You're a member of basschat, a fountain of knowledge.
 13.
Bit heavy for me I think.. would never be able to lug that up the stairs
Oh, I think I've got the wrong end of the stick
 14.
um, dumb question if I may. What is raking?
It's not dumb if you've never come across the term before. I only really came to understand what it meant about 6 months ago when I started playing again. Raking is
Striking a string with one finger and then striking the next lower string with the same finger.
As opposed to alternate fingering. I think that's how you explain it. I'm sure someone will correct me or explain it better if it's not clear.
 15.
I am rubbish at theory and have a large pile of books at home that I thought at various times would help me through the maze. Trouble is they are all as dull as ditch-water and I give up faster than you can say E flat minor seventh. Take Chuck Rainey's tutor book (called something like Modern Bass Guitar or Electric Bass Guitar). It simply includes pages upon pages of scales, arpeggios etc with no musical context. Does anyone know of a bass tutorial book that could actually make this stuff fun by bringing in real life applications. By which I mean, perhaps showing a scale, relating it to the composition and melody or bass line of a well-known track, then taking variations to show how it could be applied in different styles? When jakesbass did a tutorial at the SE BassBash last year he did something along these lines and it was very inspiring - unfortunately all I can remember of his talk now is his enthusiasm, ability and that awesome Alembic! Edit: I know lessons from a good tutor would help but I have very little time as I leave the house for work at 6am, get home 7.30pm-ish and have a wife and three kids to amuse/deal with etc (as well as BassChat to stare at endleessly). Practically speaking I couldn't do more than one maybe two lessons a month
I'd go for a lesson a month if that's all you can fit in. I'm in a similar situation, I'd love to have lessons but can't fit them in. As for books it's really trial and error. Sometimes because you can't ask questions it can cause a fair deal of confusion. I've got a couple of books that use short exerts as examples. Adrian Ashton's Bass Handbook and Hal Leonard's Bass Method The start very simple, the Adrian Ashton book has a few longer examples to practice with. They're OK. But probably no more interesting than you've already got. I've also got Bass Guitar for Dummies but I don't use it.
 16.
Thanks everyone Looks like I've got the amp sorted Will update once I have it Now to start looking for a cab...
One cab madam.
 17.
I'm not a huge Audioslave fan much prefer Tim in RATM, most "supergroups" are never as good as their original bands though imho.
I was only listening to Audioslave's first album earlier and thinking how underrated they were. But each to their own. Tim has a great tone on that album. Also must reiterate the guy from Cog, sounds b0llocks brilliant. Listening to it now.
 18.
I've got a van with a disabled conversion and a Singlecut. I'm comfortable with my immense coolness.
In actual fact what, what does a van with a Singlecut look like.
 19. I'm vein, simple. Saying that I drive a Nissan Almera Tino. I like to think it's ironically cool.
 20. Considering that I am now beginning to appear quite regularly on 'todays top 20 posters', I'd have to say my addiction is getting steadily worse Ironically it got worse after Countbassy asked, in his thread, how to cut down or wean himself off BC. It seems to have the opposite effect on me.
 21. I was initially wondering, as like in my OP I've found differing opinions. I tend to alternate, I think, but have noticed that I do occasionally rake. However, raking from an open string my muting isn't always what it could be. Thank you for the advice and opinions.
 22. I've nothing really positive to add, I just wanted to say it's been a lovely 5 pages of reading. I too struggle somewhat with the ohms stuff, which is not a good sign as I have a maths based degree . It's also been of help, as I too will be looking to buy a similar sized set up at some point - well probably when the kids have left home and I have some free time. So that'll probably be in about 20 years
 23. Simple, is raking good or bad, or does it not matter. I only ask as I've read conflicting opinions in a couple of books.
 24. Personally, I do not like single cutaways. The aesthetics don't work IMO, they appear unbalanced in my eye (please note in my eye, it's not a comment weight distribution). The Warwick specifically, the wood itself looks awful. Warwick is probably my favourite bass manufacturer, but I am wondering what on earth is going on in that company lately, given some of the designs they are coming up with and their pricing.
 25.
But then you do own an Ibanez.......pot calling the kettle black?! lol I like the Thumb SC actually, and I'm a bit of a traditionalist with body shapes Si
:snob: Well, really!
