I like. The blue one I bought recently is one of my main basses now. Well made and cracking tone.
Not a hint of wooliness or anything sheep related then?

Good welcome to thee sir!

The description underneath isn't really selling it to me though.
"big, wooly tones"
Looks great I admit, but I'm not sure I want something that sounds like a sheep.
what do midlanders count as?
Sort of Midley? Or mild maybe. Not as soft as south, not as hard as north, but mild. Welcome to the forum Bass_Guardian. Good choice of newspaper to read as well. Well done, keep up the good work.
The downside to having an external site for this, is that it will lay itself open to colonisation by Guitarists... and the dreaded spawn thereof that is The Guitard. If a separate non-bass Sub-Forum were nailed inconspicuously somewhere, at least we'd know all the weirdos there were fundamentally sound.
Perhaps as a sub within Off Topic so not to attract non-members to its existence.
Does he? My recollection of him was always with a Gibson, until some point in more recent times when he started playing Warwicks. As an impressionable teenager in the 70s my recollection of bass players was that they always stood out when they weren't playing Fenders - Paul McCartney and Chris Squire (Rickenbacker), Jim Lea (Gibson or John Birch), Overend Watts and Trevor Boulder (Gibson). For instance a perusal of what's available on YouTube of the Sweet shows Steve Priest playing mainly Fenders, but my overwhelming recollection of his bass was (from probably the only time he ever used it) on TotP playing a Rickenbacker. Oh and Andy Fraser is a well-known Gibson player.
No he doesn't play a Fender does he! Which is what I should have posted and should have read. Sorry.
Jack Bruce and his Gibson would make my head turn for a double check regardless that I already know he doesn't play a Fender
. Andy Fraser doesn't seem to be associated with a particular bass these days. On his website he's nearly always glued to an acoustic six string. -

Welcome!

It's an excellent idea. We could even rebrand the site to say Basschat.co.uk The home of deep discussion! And for those who play other instruments, who cannot be bothered to set up their own forum. Ducks and walks.
Their anonymous in looks because it seems that everyone's got one so you notice more when a bassist turns up with something isn't either a Fender or one of their clones. And from the evidence on display in the program the default P-Bass sound is an indistinct rumble competing with the guitarist's bottom E string and the Hammond player's left hand part - unless you're Iron Maiden in which case it's an indistinct rumble punctuated by weird metallic clanking sounds!
To an extent yes, I see what you're saying, but I'm not sure I'd use the word anonymous. The Fender is an iconic instrument, whether personally people like it or not. However, I do agree that when a player isn't playing a Fender the eyes widen and ears go back to see what is being played. For example, Jack Bruce and his Gibson would make my head turn for a double check regardless that I already know he does play a Fender usually. But then we are both on a bass forum and we can be quite trainspotterish about these things. Ask my wife whether she has the slightest interest in who's player what and the answer is definitely no. As for tone and mix, I think maybe dave-bass 5 has raised an interesting point about the rigs, and it may be the that most metal bass players felt that was the sound and tone to have, rather than being to do with the innate features of a P-Bass. Personally I've always found someone like Andy Fraser had a more interesting tone. This may sound completely ridiculous but on Songs of Yesterday he almost, to me, sounds like he's playing a trombone. I'll get my coat. I've gone way off thread, do apologise. -

Anybody know any bass guitar teachers in Cornwall?
Marvin replied to cameltoe's topic in Tutors Available
I'm wanting to brush up my technique, have someone assess my left and right hand positions, and generally make me a better player all round! A lot of teachers near me are guitar players who also teach bass. I'm not suggesting I won't learn anything off them, but for fear of being taught theory by someone who seldom picks up a bass I'd like an actual bass player, one with experience I can draw from, who can push my playing on a bit. Any ideas?
Afraid it's a difficult one. I live in n.devon and am encountering similar problems. My wife works in a school and asked one of the visiting music tutors if he knew of anyone in our area who taught bass. He taught bass himself but is a multi instrumentalist and fully booked. So no further forward unfortunately. -
Thanks for all the advice people. I am totally happy with what I can, and do play. I am not interested in bass for bass sake. To me it's always just been a rather cool and subversive way of adding something to music. Trying to learn something new at this late stage would actually kill it completely for me! I think a break would be good. Does that mean I will get banned from BC?
It might if you ask for a guitar forum on BC. Ask velvetkevorkian what response he got from Ped when he suggested it. (it's in site issues) I'm still laughing just thinking about it.

Must be the same Adrian Ashton whose book I bought, I didn't realise he was a director at Mansons. Saying that I haven't been into their premises at McCoy's Arcade, I tend to try and avoid the place on the rare occasions I am in Exeter. Nothing more embarrassing than drooling in a shop.

Welcome. Nice gear. As for the tab and stuff, afraid I'm clueless . However, there is oodles of info on 'ere, so enjoy.
Get out
A very appropriate response. What a nerve, really!
Bass nerd? What should that mean then, eh?
I do apologise, my post wasn't directed at yourself, but I used your post as a possible 'answer' to the OP. In that if you want to wean yourself of BC take less interest in string gauges and the like, ie stop being so nerdy about the technical aspects of a bass, like what I am.
Will I get a permanent loan of £130 in return then?
Ah, you spotted the flaw in my request
I have started to pick up my tele a lot more though
I can't pick up my tele, it weighs a tonne. Anyway put it down someone might be watching it.
-
I do start some periodically, but it's not the point. I'm talking about, what people are 'used to' discuss. Discussions about jazz bass finishes, string gauges, and amp wattages - for me, these just are technical tools for making music, nonessential stuff, but they're not music itself, if that makes sense.. If it's good for you and others, mate, it's brilliant, but for me, it doesn't do the trick ,that's what I wanted to say. That's it, take care
The answer to the question then is stop being a bass nerd.
