1. Doddy and Jennifer's contributions have given me hope (ok a bit overstating it but you get the idea ) 1pf is always held up as the correct way to play, and is something I simply cannot do in the lower frets, I am not joking it kills my hand. Brilliant thread.
2.
Whatever happened to Pete Cox?...I hear you say! Word is, he's joined some outrageously talented individuals. The bass player, apparently, is phenomenal... and staggeringly good looking, to boot.
Well Mr Cox is a lucky man, to have the services of such an awesome bass player. You'll have to tell us all who this bass player is.
3. It does seem all rather strange. I had considered making a donation.
4. Incredibly sad and tragic. My thoughts are with his friends and family.
RIP James Preston. Sorry I couldn't make your life a better place for you in time man.
From reading your post maddude you should, in no way feel sorry. You did what any friend could and much more than others. You should be proud that, unlike some others, you cast aside prejudice, became a true friend and can look back on a time of Jimmy's life you shared and be able to say ' that was good' (especially the Thin Lizzy cover). This may not have made a lot of sense but hopefully you understand what I was trying to get at. Take care Rich
5. Brilliant song, underrated player.
6. I came across this on YouTube a couple of days ago. Lovely clip. I've only recently got into his playing, he makes it look effortless and the bass looks stupendously small.
7. A fellow student of the University of Janner. Were you a member of the muso soc? I still had my t-shirt until last year, got creosote on it so ended up in the bin Welcome.

Hello!

Welcome. The for sale area is somewhat addictive and dangerous

Ibanez lovers.

I assume you've read this thread. A Classic Design BCer's eulogising about the SR's
10.
I used to put my strings in the dishwasher. Worked a treat.
We don't have a dishwasher so I tried putting mine in the washing machine. Wife would have none of it. Women they're so protective about some things
11.
Speeding up and slowing down - unplanned, inconsistently and not together - is a major problem.
You've heard my playing then.
12.
Ok, to re-iterate: Playing behind or ahead of the beat, as you say, are subtle, consistent rhythmic devices that affect the feel of a tune sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, depending on how appropriately they are applied. If done well - and it is a *lot* harder to do this than many people think - they can improve a piece. Rushing or dragging is a problem with a musician's timing, and I have yet to find any situation where it has a positive effect. Jennifer
As Jennifer's explanation is the only one I've understood in this thread, I thoroughly agree with her. I also agree that playing off the beat is a lot a harder than many think. What often happens is you get 'musicians' boasting that they play off the beat when in actual fact they are simply playing out of time. I play off the beat all the time, others say I can't keep time
13.
The one thing that really annoys me about drop tuning is when people still refer to the notes as though it was in standard tuning. If I'm in drop D the 3rd fret is an F not G.
How lazy! I can't see how that would work for them. That's potentially eight notes they've lost. Careless.
14. Have on occasion detuned the E to D for Muse tracks. Don't think I have the appropriate strings on for it though.
15. I'm somewhat confused. I still don't really understand this 'rushing' and ''drawing'. Potentially it sounds that it could result in one terrible messy sound.
16.
My current theory is thinner teardrop shaped ones probably work better for people who don't use them all the time and big thick triangles work better for agricultural players like me who don't use fingers.
I'm rather agricultural (apt given my Devonian heritage ), so that would explain why I'm struggling with the teardrop picks I've been trying to use. Just remembered what the others were that I used to use, Jim Dunlop Tortex (little pic of a tortoise on them), nearing 1mm.
17. I had to give up using a pick, just couldn't get to grips with it. Seriously, I think the ones I've recently bought are too thick, and I can't get used to how rigid they are. Unfortunately I can't find my old ones, the house seems to have eaten them! As an aside, a guitard reprimanded me the other day for referring to them as picks and was adamant that they should be called plectrums.
18. Storing gear in a garage in a good way of making it worthless, sorry to be so blunt. If you need money combined with the fact you've nowhere to store the rig probably best to move it on. Only problem may arise when you go back to gigging, in that you may not have the reddies to buy something you need.
19. Agree with a lot of what Bassasin and Jezzaboy have posted. When you consider what we are told are the best live bands at the moment I would rather pay out to see the Who than some of those. I saw the Kings of Leon on TV at one of the summer festivals. They are supposed to be a 'brilliant live act'. They were f2cking dire. Lifeless sh1t and overall crap. Fault him for some technical f@ck ups, but I'd rather see someone like Townsend play with his passion for his art than some bunch of dire shoegazing miseries. Seen Daltrey sing live some years back admittedly, he was superb.
20.
Far too many waffly 'opinions' in this thread for my liking. For those who care about the TRUTH, here are the plain, unvarnished, scientific facts:
He, does as always, speaks the truth. I do like the colours of the diagram BTW.
21. Jake, why are there so many lines? Is it tab for a six string bass? Thanks for providing this exercise if I ever get my lazy arse in gear to practice I will use it. Cheers Rich
