Fascinating inside secrets about Gibson Les Pauls and choosing one:
Marvin replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Correct my possible stupidity and naivety, but can what a guitar (or bass for that matter) is finished in ie poly or nitro really make a noticeable difference to its final sound. I understand what MrX was saying about resisting absorption, but I really can't see it making a difference that would be noticeable. I could be wrong. -

I know nothing of these 6 stringed squeaky attention seeking devices. To me they are just unnatural. :snob: -

Why do people keep requesting tabs in this forum?
Marvin replied to Oscar South's topic in Theory and Technique
The requests probably get posted in T&T because it gets a better response than in other sub forums. Post it in some of the others it gets overlooked. Personally I don't have a problem with it, but that's probably because i've posted for tab here -
Ah, thanks for that! Bit nervous about the wire wool bit, but I'll give it a shot with some good quality cleaning cloth.
Very fine wire wool should work well, you don't want the stuff you can strip paint off of metal with. I use it on pieces of furniture I've made it really works the wax into the grain. I prefer it to using a cleaning cloth because you seem to get a better finish. Find an off cut of wood and try it for yourself if you're unsure.
Study bass is a good site. http://www.studybass.com/
Study bass is the first online resource I found and used when I returned to playing in the middle of last year. I found it really good, not too wordy, loads of examples and exercises. It gave me a good starting point and I started to realise how what I was playing naturally, fitted some theory.
Erm, what about this for heaven's sake? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=74284 Major Minor is the unsung hero of Basschat.
Major Minor's thread a full of detail and a fantastic resource for anyone on the forum. I've dipped in and out several times. I find it good to use several resources as sometimes something that I've found tricky to understand in one has become clear in another. Others on here have also posted short snippets of theory or practice routines that are really good. Just a case of finding them.

How the hell do some people treat their basses?!
I try to keep mine as pristine as possible, my blue Jazz is a 1992 and it hasn't got a mark and I've done 250+ gigs with it.
Well you'd probably 'get the sandpaper out' it if it did get chipped anyway. -
Here is some footage from a three song set I did a few weeks ago. I edited it to 5 minutes and included a bit from each tune I played. It was filmed at the NAMM show this year. It sounds ok considering my tracks and bass were all coming out of an Ampeg mini bass amp. Said it before, you're a true talent. Cheers

It was just a live practice which we recorded and a mate who's into filming came along with his camera. Hopefully get some gigging soon from the recordings Was watching Urb's amazing video, that's wicked playing mate...the other end of the spectrum compared to my basic 5 notes...but all bass none the less One love , bass love
How much gigging are you likely to be doing in Devon?
I remember going round to someone's house to try out a bass they had for sale. Beautiful Georgian town-house, immaculately decorated and tastefully furnished. The seller told me his Uncle had been in the Navy and had brought this old Fender over from the States in the early '60's, played it twice then stuck it under the bed. Anticipating a glorious, mint Precision I opened the case. Imagine my horror. The whole thing was covered in black gunge and sticky stuff. And it absolutely reeked of pineapples.
I think (I emphasise I think) there is a big difference between your instrument picking up those unavoidable and accidental knocks and scraps and then there is neglect and abuse. Personally I like my stuff, any of it, to be in a well maintained working order. I don't want my bass looking like I keep it in the outdoor shed. It cost good money and feel it should be looked after. For the same reason I told everyone to buy my youngest two sons nothing for christmas and give them money. they only bust any toy they are given, really annoys me, a waste of money. -

BTW, wasn't slagging your Ibby off earlier
Both of my posts written with tongue in cheek really. Si was referring to the sound, and it does look naff IMO (natural wood) Ped's I read again and understand the concept now I'm awake. -

Nice array of basses for comparison. If I have to give a preference, ESP last one though with the front pick up half off.

Having read through the entire thread i am totally perplexed. Back to the beginning then, if I plug my Ibby into my amp and then the cheap p-bass copy my drummer has into the same amp do they sound the same. No, they don't, they are completely different. However that may be complicated by the fact the Ibby is active and the p-bass passive. So what happens when I put them through my zoom. Anything I want really (obviously not as much as a POD but still). It may not be identical to say a Trace Elliot sound but it's an OK approximation and if you're playing live who's going to know? I remember being at a gig where my mate's band were top of the bill, and he also supplied the P.A. I was stood behind the control desk with him asking dumb questions. At the time he had a Stingray going through an Ampeg. Sounded great. but when I saw him a few months later he had a Trace Elliot and had changed his bass (I can't remember what it was mainly because I probably didn't like it) but still sounded the same. I don't know what that says really but if I could DI from a box of tricks into the PA and forego lugging around cabs and amps and all the sh1t that goes with it I'd certainly give a go. All I do know is Skanky deserves a prize for having a truly brilliant and creative mind. -
Ultimately there are only two catagories of people who listen to the bass tone at a gig. 1) The Bass player. 2) A Bass player in the audience. To most people we're the big guitar at the back. Other players have complemented me on my tone. I assume my playing sucks, but the piece of wood and other expensive hardware I bought to smash those notes out sounds good.
Can't argue that. -
Or a custom build. Yeah, you know it makes sense. Not an expensive custom thing though, or not. How much does your usual custom build go for these days?
