1. Probably overlooked because he's not pushing himself to the front and Pearl Jam are one of those marmite bands, you know you either love them or loathe them. Personally I've always liked and rated his playing. Really got into WMA and Rats off the second album, always thought his lines gave a great groove on those two. And tone, don't forget the tone.
2. Many thanks to you all. Found out that my local music store stocks both, so probably best if I pop along and have a noodle. Also a good friend, and fellow bassist, knows of someone who has just bought an ashdown, so may fire a few questions that way.
3. no.12 The Breeders- Cannonball, love it.
4. Thanks. I did have a play around on a Park practice amp a couple of months ago (which I believe is something to do with Marshall) and that had a good sound. And I've got to say for 15w was loud, it kept up with a drummer and guitarist, albeit full volume.
5. I've always liked Fairy Tale of New York - Pogues/McColl. Always bandied about at Christmas. However, I'll admit this may not be appropriate for your band.
6. Looking at getting a 300w combo for pub gigging. Marshall MB4210 http://www.marshallamps.com/product.asp?pr...;pageType=SPECS or Ashdown MAG C115-300 EVO II Combo http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.asp?ID=77 Both about the same price Is one better than the other, eg reliability etc?
7. Free - Heartbreaker
8. Brick House by The Commodores. I even do the moves, otherwise my fingers just don't get funky enough.
9. Thanks for that one Pete. Never heard of it before but looks a worthwhile read.
10.
With a name like Adamski, the last thing I expected was black metal. I do miss Plymo though.
Having spent 3 years living there some years back, I've never heard anyone say that before.
11. Currently trawling through old threads in Amps and Cabs, looking for what's good and what's not. Many thanks again for the advice.
12. Many thanks. Fairly conclusive, I'm off to buy some volume.
13. Of course to anyone with GAS that is a stupid question, however. Next year things are set up to start gigging. Currently I only own one bass, an Ibanez SR300 and a practice amp. The bass does a decent job, however being active I was considering getting a passive as a back-up. Money is always a bit tight and I'm not aiming to be a rock star, just for the fun, so don't really need to splash out on loads of gear. Hence, do I throw all available cash at the amp? Or should I get the back up bass and a slightly less expensive amp?
14. Unless it's dirt cheap, I tend to avoid any tainted goods.
15.
Commendable honesty.
+1 Top gent.
16. A minor definitely fits and sounds right. And you're right, doesn't move off of it all the way through.
17. When I was a little while ago, usually about 30 mins tops. However, my wife who works at the local school came home from work yesterday and informed me that the new music studio, which includes recording and rehearsal rooms, is available to hire. A big smile from me. Decent facilities not 5 minutes walk from my house.
18.
i had one, thought the sound was really nice, swapped for a 5-stringer though, which is even nicer
Probably me just being picky. It was growling nicely last night.
19. All he needed to do was pop a new neck on, check the pups and he's been off again. How wasteful these rock stars are, really.
20. I have an SR300 in Sparkle Red (well that's how it's described) with rosewood board. The sound is a little wanting sometimes but for the price I shouldn't really grumble. The body is brilliant for me. Light and thin - a bit like myself. Got mine for about £235 in north devon. I wanted blue with a maple fretboard because I'm fickle like that.
21. I can't read (music), but I would say 'feel' definitely comes from the player not the paper. When I say feel, I mean how to 'attack' the strings and all those nuances that provide feel. I picked up the music for a funk number a while back. I can go through and work out what is played, notes, how long to hold, pauses etc. But I come from listening to lots of alternative rock, rock and indie inspired material. I find playing funk difficult because I can't communicate the feel of funk when I play it. Please ignore if this doesn't make sense or you find irrelevant.
22. Haven't heard of him afraid. But you're right he has some very nice stuff there.
23. Watched it a couple of weeks ago. I've never liked Duran Duran, but I thought it could be interesting. Afraid to say I found it thoroughly uninteresting. Hopes were dashed, so back to quietly ignoring them.
24.
I always thought it was A blues/minor pentatonic. Haven't played it in many years so I can't remember it all that well. Someone might have said it's in the key of F if it's the IIIm chord but I can't remember it so I can't say if they'd techincally be right.
My theory knowledge is woefully inadequate, but I think I understand what you're saying. A blues/minor pentatonic does seem to fit/sound ok though.
25. Full on. No compromise.
