I thought a bit of Stevie Wonder, but it didn't receive a positive response. And when I said Doobie Brothers, got told 'cheesy American rock'. I'd go for both, Higher Ground a brilliant tune, and so to Long Train Running. I thought they were funky, hence my confusion. I'm beginning to think perhaps my mate has got genre confusion. Like most covers band the aim is probably to play material that doesn't make your audience want to leave the premises or throw stuff at you. I generally run stuff past the wife as she is the typical disinterested pub punter. Wants to be able to tap her foot to it, maybe dance to but also ignore it to be able to chat to others. She refers to this as the 'tap and yap' test. That fine Stretch tune is definitely in, cracker.

A particular member of the rhythm section, for a covers band, wishes to do funk or funky stuff, and some reggae. But, I'm confused as to what is actually meant by this. When pressed for material that said person wishes to cover, I only get the following. 1. Stretch - Why did you do it 2. Commodores - Machine Gun & Brick House. and that's it. Generally, I've said that we should concentrate on stuff that we can play, that we don't hate and just as important people will want to hear. Basically a good quality strong set of songs regardless of genre. So what is meant by the term funky? Can anyone suggest any sort of funky tunes? Are there tunes songs that are thought of as funky but are not necessarily pure funk? To me funk refers to George Clinton, Parliament, Sly and the Family Stone and so on, oh and Bootsy of course. So am I missing something? Perhaps I can then take something back and say ' what about this?' PS no RHCP please. Ta Apologies if none of this makes any sense.

A guitarist and a singer. Maybe a drum machine, recording gear? Mmmmmmm.

Which is really good as we were having a really good laugh as well. The aim is definitely a band and we've agreed a broad range of material, not actual songs but bands and influences. All the above + a big bundle of cash. If you really want to be in their band you could try paying them. It might work.

My drummer likes me again and we off to make music. We had a session with a plank-spanker a few months ago. I'd only just started to play again so tied with being sh1t to start off with was rusty as. Anyway we turned up with 3 songs in hand to see how things would go, we'd get sort just over half way through and he started saying well that one's in the bag. I was thinking what about the rest of the song, you know where the key changes or the middle eight maybe? Are we not playing those bits? At the end he was happy with how things had gone and suggested another 3 tracks to do for the next session. Could we not nail the first 3 please? I must admit I ran a mile. I felt I would be wasting his time, he was good so perhaps he only needed to do the first half and the rest would just fall into place.

We have entered the era of the songwriter. The musician or virtuoso player is commonly ignored. Take for example when Guns 'n' Roses started up, who the hell wanted to be Axl Rose? Slash was the man, wielding his axe. (I know someone is going to disagree strongly with that). Flea aside, in the bass world we have signature basses for Mike Drint (or whatever he's called out of Greenday), hardly pushing the boundaries. Songwriters are supreme at the moment.

Not having owned too many basses I'm not overwhelmed with knowledge, however, I have an Ibanez SR and although the neck is slim it doesn't necessarily mean that it is automatically best suited for small hands ( i also have small hands). I coming to the conclusion it's the whole package. If your standing up for example how it sits on your body etc. So best to try a few out and just get to know what is comfortable. Don't get me wrong I do like my Ibanez and wouldn't hesitate recommending them.
