1. I like the flexibility they give you. Sometimes you might want a really and I mean really fat sound, so you just boost that bass up and there it is. Also really good, like silldx said for dub sounds. It's just a matter of personal taste and wanting to muck about a bit.
  2.
It's in the key of Db and the song revolves around a ii-V progression - Ebm7 - Ab13. Presumably this will be of interest to you?: http://www.basslinepublishing.com/brand-ne...her-sister.html Will be released in a few weeks time. Stu
Many thanks. Ironically I was only just looking at the new thread you placed on the affiliates forum after I posted this thread, went to your site and saw it will be out soon. The revamped website looks really good. Very easy to use, I like it.
  3. Decided to get a little jazzy funky, so dug out the Brother Sister album by the Brand New Heavies. Specifically the first track HAVE A GOOD TIME. I've got most of it nailed, apart from the little impro bit where the sax does the solo. I know the whole song revolves around Ab and Db (or the enharmonic equivalants) but my theory is very basic so I'm struggling to identify what key it is in and the relevant scales for the chords. Sorry if this isn't very clear, but can anyone provide some guidance.
  4.
Welcome-how deep in the South-West are you?

Hi Deep Thought - probably not as deep as you - I can see England from the upstairs window. Still, glad to be living in Cornwall. Thanks for the welcome.

another cornishman . where abouts are you from man?
Welcome, sincerely. But just you lot stay the correct side of the Tamar.
  5. Well, happy birthday and all. Hope you have a lovely day. Are you going to send any of that cake out before the chimp eats it all? (looks vaguely like a drummer I once knew )
  6. One can only assume that the chap in front of you had eaten something that disagreed with him.
  7.
At the end of the day you should remember that, audiences notice the good notes, only musicians notice the bad notes.
That's made my day that!
  8. You could try what I do. Shout at your hands. ' COME ON HANDS, PLEASE' Then comes the unedifying pleading with my hands
  9. expensive? given some of the posts already given.
  10. Eventually I'm going to need another bass, call it necessity call it GAS, I just don't know. However, been looking at Rockbass by Warwick, probably a Corvette. Just wondered if anyone had an opinion on them.
  11.
Agreed, my favourite type of bassplaying - not showy-offy, not Mr Flashypants, but solid and there to support the song.
It's what bassplaying is all about for me. You're the glue and he is very good glue. As for Mr Knopfler, always comes across as a decent bloke. Probably press misinterpretation as usual.
  12. Deep blue body, matching headstock with maple fretboard. Definite fav. OR, natural wood (depending on the wood) or those translucent paint effects. Quite like SOME subursts but not all.
  13.
Zoom b2.1 u is my tip
What's the rhythm function (or drum machine) like on them? The b2.1.u is a little pricey so have been looking at the b2 though.
  14. Couldn't here him at all. Perhaps he needs a bigger bass? Rather than the cello he seems to be playing
  15. Watching the same. Spot on
  16.
What web cams do you guys use? my one can't keep up with my hands.
That could end up on the quote thread if left unedited!
  17. Been looking around for a multi- effects pedal, wondered if anyone had an opinion Cheers
  18.
I will be down to those lazy f***ers in the RM striking again, when the rest of us work for a living. They need bloody privatising, sharpish. Apologies to those of you here in the RM, but it pisses me off. I actually got an email today from Guitarist Magazine saying my subs issue may arrive late because of postal strikes.
I am a postie. I can fully understand your pi**ed offness (that's good english init). I had occasion to give RM customer services - if that's not a contradiction in terms - a damn good blasting the other day for taking over 2 weeks to deliver a Recorded delivery. And my son is still waiting for his birthday card from my brother. It's a combination of some bone idle staff combined with brainless management - afraid a change of ownership won't change a thing there. Look at BA. I'm not currently on strike and never have been. Last time there was a ballot I voted no. But I've got to say the way I and my colleagues have been treated over the last 12 months I don't know. My national strike ballot paper is sat on my desk and, well...........I'm still thinking on it. Apologies for going off thread. I'll probably end up buying BGM again this month, despite saying I wouldn't.
  19. You could always using the low B as somewhere to rest your thumb?
  20. As said in prev posts, you can't really go wrong with Squire, Yamaha, Ibanez or Cort. Personally I have an Ibanez SR300 as I wanted the slimmer neck because I have got what have been described as ' shovels for hands' i.e. not small, but large palms ( not very long fingers). My hands aren't really designed for playing stringed instruments so I went for something that made life easier. I am more than happy with it, my only gripe is the colour, it's red and I wanted the blue with maple neck, but I couldn't find one
  21. I'm probably going to get a lot of disagreement, but personally I cannot think of an album or track I purchased solely for the bass line or player - although it might have a great player on it. I don't love Nick Drake's Three Hours because of Danny Thompson's playing on it, it's a great song. Suffice to say I went to see Danny Thompson play and it bore me so much my arse nearly fell off. Although this may be heresy on a bass forum - I've never heard a Primus track I liked, don't like the Chilli Peppers, never heard anything from Clarke, Wooton, Miller or Lee that has got me interested. We do need the innovators though. They influence others to make great music.
  22.
I'd just keep at it if it were me. I'm pretty organised but I'm quite the procrastinator. I've got three bands at the minute, although two are not at all busy, one is though and the other two will be picking up soon. I have a full time day job with a lot of responsibility, studying hard for a diploma required by my job, love going fishing, have to cook almost every night, love to go to the pub, etc. etc. It's hard getting a balance, but you can do it. Calendarise as much as you can and get a feel for your week. Do plan for yourself a bit of time out to chill. I reckon you'll be fine. It's getting a picture of my life in my head that works for me. I can sort of see my life for the next month in my head. It makes it easier.
Please don't tell me you have kids as well. If you do it will just confirm to me that I'm as organised as the large untidy pile of paper(s) that sit on top of this computer desk almost obscuring the screen. To the OP, just see how it goes.
  23.
Don't be tempted to buy Bass Guitar for Dummies. It's utter tripe.

I have a copy of that, It's not utter tripe. It's arse water.
That's 3 of us so far then. I agree that a tutor is probably the best way to go. However, if the OP is like myself then finding time to devote to actual lessons can be quite a task given everything else in life that demands your attention. Hence that's why I have plumped for a couple of books. With a book I can sit down at the end of a day for 10mins or 2hours whatever I want. Or if I am satisfied I have interacted enough with the kids for the morning I can send them off to watch TV and I get my book out. I've got Adrian Ashton's book, which is alright. As some have pointed out, when you don't understand something, i.e it makes a jump you don't quite get, you can't ask questions. It does spend a large proportion teaching you how to read sheet music. For me I don't know when I would be in a situation when I would need to read sheet music, especially as sheet music for bass is not exactly in the top 10 sellers list. That aside I do feel I know more than I did before. You could always dip into the Lessons on here. As for my copy of Bass Guitar for Dummies, might be time to recycle that one.
  24.
Yeah I only use a couple of models at the most, the ampeg and the Sub Dub pre, with a little compression. BUT, I use a fair few effects on some of the songs I play live and being able to have stereo chorus, flangers, delays, synth type sounds, with great distortion models, etc. is so useful for me. I use the volume pedal a lot too. I suppose really wanted opinions on the quality of the core tones, personally I doubt anyone could really tell the difference between them and a real amp and cab, especially in a full band setting. Very subjective though, I didn't really like many of the tones in that video.
Had a look at that the other day. Saw you had one via your sig and was intrigued. I liked it and was impressed by the sheer amount of sounds you can get out of it. Never really sure what to make of something I hear over YT as it gets pumped through my computers crappy speakers. But you can't not be impressed.

    Site down?

Well thank, something, (best not to mention gods or god like things), everything is back to normal. What with the site down I almost had an incurable GAS attack. Could have resulted in something ridiculous being purchased
