I've got an Ibanez SR300. The pot for boosting or cutting the bass is shared with that for the treble. (apologies to all those who know that already) Especially if I haven't played for a couple of days when I adjust the bass it crackles, but not the treble (or any other pots). However, if I give the jack a shove (couldn't think of a better word I'm afraid) it stops doing it. But then it will start again at random. I've got to say I'm a little confused as to what may be going on, anyone got any ideas?

Bass Lines that everyone plays different
Marvin replied to ironside1966's topic in General Discussion
I'm one of the worst bass players ever, and after picking the thing up after a 15 year gap and trying to learn how to play properly, I was definitely more certain just playing root notes all the time. I didn't know any better! -
So what? If I gave a flying fart about 'cool' (who exactly decides what is and isn't 'cool' anyway?), I wouldn't own 80% of my CDs.
I'll second that. I'm off to listen to my a-Ha albums.
One of my favourite bands ever. First saw them at Plymouth Top Rank just before 'Body and Soul' was released-was absolutely blown away and went on to see them three more times. I absolutely detested all the synthy pop bands around at the time (including Tears for Fears!) but I had a special hatred for The Thompson Twins, because they released a single called 'Sister of mercy'. Every time I was asked what music I liked, and I mentioned the Sisters of Mercy, I would get 'Oh yes, Thompson Twins'. NOOOOOO!!! NOT THE BLOODY THOMPSON TWINS!!! NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BLOODY THOMPSON TWINS!!! AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! etc. etc. It used to annoy me somewhat. I was later to be horrified to find that one of my favourite Debbie Harry solo songs, 'I Want That Man', was written by Alannah Currie of the bloody Thompson Twins! Whilst all this was going on, I was listening to stuff like Husker Du, The Three Johns, Screaming Blue Messiahs and the Gun Club. Never had any time for the Tears for Fearses, Howard Joneses or Nick Kershaws of the time. Loathed the lot of 'em. Quite liked Heaven 17, but that was about the extent of my liking for synthy pop.
Mmm should we take it that you didn't like the Thompson Twins then?

Bass pics you have to keep coming back to

The Fender Jazz's on this thread are my favs, call me old fashioned, could look at them for quite a while until the wife says move! -
I've never liked the look of them and never seen the point of them. They just spoil the whole look of a bass, you don't see such paraphernalia on other instruments, like veneered wood inlays over drum skins, chintzy cushions in between hi-hat symbols -no.

You better go and get those high waist band trousers then.

Bought an Ibanez SR300,and a practice amp (for now) - first bass in a long time, sold all my old gear over a decade ago. However, there was a Squire VMJ in the store and I still quite like that one as well. Not exactly the top end of the scale but haven't got the money for more expensive gear, so I aim low. The question is however, how does one get this past the other half? The Ibanez is bright red and is the only bass I have so I couldn't exactly hide any new acquisition amongst my existing collection - of one. Dream GAS on the other hand - a Warwick ( of some kind, always liked them), a Fender Jazz, of some incarnation, an Ampeg rig and one of those TC electronic outfits - for convenience of course.
It's not wrong - its simply a different interpretation!!! - alternatively,if challenged, just say that you're playing the jazz version! Apart from that slight qualification .... +1
Thank you kind sir, I'll be quoting the next time I play (prob wednesday) -

I'm crap so play everything wrong. -
Brilliant news. As for posting MP3's you have to ask someone else. Sorry couldn't resist. Well done.
Put a metronome on 40 bpm and practise clapping your hands perfectly in time so that the metronome clicks disappear. Alex
If the OP isn't going to do that I am. Also thought the other comments about not playing as such were important. Sometimes you can feel pressured to impress by banging out loads notes. You also need to realise when you need to leave spaces.
Bass snobs with a grand plus basses will always look down there noses at Squiers, but its horses for courses and for the money they are hard to beat.
I've never understood that attitude. Squires are generally a good buy, and if you are on a budget then you are getting a lot of bass for your money. Some of it is all down to how much you are willing to pay but I don't think you can rank them easily

Been pondering this one again, and for me the person who encapsulates what a bass player should be is John Entwhistle. Doesn't prance around and let his fingers do the working.

+1 for the gold jazz. Does it come with a matching suit ?

Picked up BP in Smiths the other day and thought someone had pinched half the pages or that it was an advertising pamphlet. It's a lot of cash for not a lot of substance IMO. BGM it's alright.
Is McCartney great? He's popular but are they the same thing? Is Jilly Cooper a great author? Is Pam Ayres a great poet? Discuss. PS - if anyone here is considering taking me seriously, please don't.
McCartney great? Don't know, I said he was much heralded by some Jilly Cooper writes that's all I'll say on that. And my mum likes Pam Ayres so I'll leave that one alone as well. All I can say is that I like the carrots.

Most of us don't know how to read music because it takes too long. Especially when your crappy job, diy, kids and all those other responsibilities get in the way. Like many others, and as Wii wrote, for me music is a hobby. In my case I don't want to feel I have to learn to read music because that becomes a chore. And then there is the simple case that many of us don't need to read music, personally I'd rather learn more theory. Then there's also the fact that some of the much heralded players can't read music either. Are we going to tell Sir Paul Macartney and Mark King they are lightweights because they can't read music? Dare you!
Oh dear, he we go again with the 'you cant be a great player if you dont read' argument. Close the thread right now and save everyone the time and effort......
+1
