Power amp aside, the Tonehammer preamp is a knob twiddlers heaven. If you're into forever twisting your knobs, buy a Tonehammer. It takes a bit of getting used to and even then it's a bit of a marmite amp. It is though very loud. I did a gig a couple of weeks back, 250 cap (so not big), drums and 2 guitars were mic'd going through the PA. I wasn't going through PA but was dominant in the mix (and that was through 212 using the TH350). If you don't like it, move it on, maybe move the cab on as well.

Originals is a tricky one to sell. I'm currently in an originals band, we're all in our 40's. The demographic of our part of the UK is very conservative towards anything and those who do go out generally prefer a covers band if music is at a venue. We sort of know that gigging is going to be sporadic and you have to be a little selective. There's no point in us approaching certain places, it'd be wasting our time and the venues. That's just the way it is. The band I'm with have struggled to get a momentum mainly because they keep loosing their bass player They'd probably be gigging more and have a better following if it weren't for that. Bloody bass players eh, grumpy lot.

The only ones I've found that would fit in my SR300 (the older one with the style sweep control) would be a set of Barts, probably the ones they use in the 500 and 600. Problem is, a set costs about the same as the bass itself. I did something else to mine, I ripped out the active eq and went passive. It gives a slightly better tone imo. The only noticeable issue that remains is the pick up output is still quite weak - although mine does increase a little when I switch to series (I had a series parralell switch put in). I did try and source a s/h 500 to rip the pickups and electronics out. Unfortunately they don't come along very often.

A Zoom B1.on, to a Behringer BDI21, into a Aguilar TH350 then a Schroeder 1212L. The Zoom has one effect patch I use and a compression patch that I've been using permanently on all other times. The compression will be being removed though and a bypass patch replacing it after hearing a recording from a couple nights ago. It's a fairly loud set up, it'll keep up with 2 100watt guitar vakve amps

There's a Schroeder 1212L in the classifieds. Very loud, light, won't have the mid-hump of the older cabs with the angled driver. All for about £450...cheaper than 2 new 210s

I bought a Squier VM Precision for £150 from, I think, Rich Tone Music. It's fantastic for the price. It's one of the older Amber body, maple neck. If you can't get something similar, then Vintage, Revelation, Harley Benton, J&D ((from DV247). The only thing I'll add is that second hand Squiers are getting to some silly prices on eBay IMO. £150 for my VM is about right I'd say, some are asking for nearly £250 for the same bass...too much IMO

How many times have you broken a string?

Never broken a string playing. Broke an E whilst fitting a new set of strings. I was tuning up and not really paying attention so the inevitable happened. The string was probably close to an octave above what it should have been when it snapped. -

The few people who do visit my place don't even notice my gear, despite it being on full show in the dinning room (which you have to walk through to get everywhere else). Hence, it's not something I've had to ponder

With kids and associated bills of all that entails, I simply wouldn't be able to commit to music as a living. Not only in terms of money but time, too many hours away from home exactly when the kids want to do stuff. I'm not good enough to be a pro anyway. Now in my mid 40s I play in an original punk/indie/alternative sort band. Gigs are sporadic, rarely is there any money, but it actually fits in so I can earn the money I need but also play bass regularly. Very few people I know could you describe as pro. They may describe themselves as so but you find out they have another income that subsidises the music. Either that or they inherited a wad of money that means they can do what they want

Revelation p basses have a good reputation. Stuart Clayton, of Bassline publishing etc, has been using one recently for a project and said it was a very good instrument. J&D p bass from DV247 are also good apparently. I picked up a Squier VM p bass for £150. I love it. It's not mind blowingly stunning, but it has a real feel and charm to it
