I'd get in touch with Alex, he may suggest an alternative BF cab. Then order it, try it out and see, or rather listen, and make your mind up. Gear and tone are very personal and individual things. BF make a great product, the only way you'll find out if you like it is if you try one.

I had a Samick made '91 made Precision. The neck was quite remarkable for a bass I paid very little for, it was like flame maple, it was the reason I kept hold of it for so long. The body was ply, but that wasn't an issue...someone apparently thought is was a US Std body, so there you go. The only thing that was crappy about it were the pots and pickups, easily sorted for little money. I've noticed that all Squier prices seem to be on the up. I've seen sellers asking well in excess of £200 for Korean Squiers. They are good, but I don't think they're that good. All the more odd as at the time they were roundly slagged off by more 'knowledgable' types. All that said, I actually prefer my Indonesian made VM P bass I bought a couple of months ago, a better bass all round and about the same price as I paid for the MIK I had.

I'd say they we're rebadged MAGs that Ashdown may have done a deal on, wanted to move on as they're now promoting the newer RootMaster range. A lot of amp for £250

The Gain and Drive controls on the Tonehammers take some getting used. The drive, for example, doesn't just create a distorted type sound, it also interacts with the EQ section and basically changes your EQ. I'd never describe it as either growly or loose. Try it with a Jazz bass. Mine sounds very tight It takes some getting used to. That said, if you want a Foo Fighters sound, buy Ashdown

I'm not a fan of the Warwick Rockbags. I had one and it didn't last very long at all, the inside lining started to come away. I look after my stuff and I only used it a few times from home to practice. Even before that it didn't seem particularly good value for money. I A/B'd 4 and 8ohm cabs in a practice room a while ago, the difference in output, at the same settings, was marginal. I think on the 8ohm I pushed the master volume up not even a full notch to get the same volume. If you stick any of the newish 500w heads on these new BF 410's it'll still probably knock buildings down.

Same weight as an Aguilar SL410x but a few hundred £ cheaper, even at what will be it's normal retail price. It should do well.

It's the whole 'Toneprint' thing that really put me off the TC Electronic when I was looking for a combo. That said I wouldn't buy the Rumble 200, like Muppet I'd go for the 500...which is what I did.

Loud band, 150 capacity venue, a lightish bass playing style...350w class D head with volume at 9o'clock. I've played with two neaderthal drummers previously and I've never needed anymore than a 300w amp...perhaps I'm just behind the times

I'm quite happy having got out of the pub rock/pop covers band thing, for a while at least. The whole thing just feels uncomfortable to me and I began to enjoy it less and less to the point it was a chore. I did my first gig a week or so ago with an originals band I joined a few months back and it felt more me. Also writing new material, stuff no one's ever heard before, no one has ever written a bass line to, that's really appealing to me. The one major PITA regards bands is the high quota of lazy and bone idle gits who, rather than put in the work, just want to brag to their mates they're in a band.

I bought a comfort strap a couple of years ago and was thoroughly unimpressed with it. I thought it was overpriced for what it was. It couldn't take the weight of a light bass without the strap slipping a bit. The button holes don't seem to be very durable either, I suppose if you use strap locks they might be ok, but other than that mine become very shabby after about 9 months of use. I wouldn't buy another. I've since changed to a wide padded Levys strap which has proved to be much better.

I sold my first bass a long, long, long time ago. I was relieved to get rid of it, it was an appalling instrument.
