1.
42 and desperately trying to continue playing bass in a band whilst bringing up a family. Gets me down quite a lot only having pretty basic basses and amps (browsing on here doesn't help ) but I have amazing kids that need my money more!
I'm the same age (although in a few days time I'll be a year older ) and I have a self imposed rule that I don't use, what I refer to as, household money to buy gear. Hence I always ask for money for Christmas and Birthdays if people feel they want to give me anything. I'd say I have good, price conscious gear I'd feel guilty as sin if I spent 'house' money on all the GAS I suffer from
2. I've tickets to see The Winery Dogs next Tuesday in Bristol. Very much looking forward to seeing them again. Hopefully there'll be no calamitous weather conditions that prevents us getting there I missed a gig by a different band back before Christmas because of the heavy rain and flooding.
3. My Facebook profile says that I'm 22, even if it is wrong I'm sticking with it In truth I'll be 43 on Sunday, gifts kindly accepted Mortgage, children and work do get in the way of joining the bands I'd like to, buy hey ho. Anyway, I'm in a good band now and am thoroughly enjoying it. All about getting the balance right. I'm similar to Gary. Most of the people my age want to do material that doesn't interest me. It's probably why I've been in a couple of projects with people in their 20s.
4.
Or got wet. Its still amazing though.
With the right stuff it'll be as waterproof as the surf board they made.
5. Love it. It'd be interesting to see a bass made of cardboard given the amount of tension.
6. It's all boxed and ready to ship. I've still got the boxes I bought it in from DV247. They're about £80 new, so this is half price Good piece of kit, just surplus to requirement now as I've got a very different set up.
7. PM replied. On hold.

Being an older model it doesn't have a USB connection but that's about it. I bought it thinking I'd start using effects in my band but to be honest it's just become a large floor tuner, effects don't seem to be my thing. The only thing I tend to do with at the moment is switch on the auto slap, pluck a note and stand there as the pedal repeats it almost indefinitely , so it's time to move it on. I'm based in North Devon. It has the proper BOSS AC adapter (it has some electrical tape one end as the plastic had got a nick in it, but no damage to the inside) and owners manual. http:// http:// http:// http://
9.
i'm trying to imagine what the latter sounds like.
...think Miley Cyrus
10. It's probably a mixed bag. The band I've just joined (originals) were talking about getting some gigs booked and whether to approach a very popular hard rock band for a support slot. The gig would be packed, they always attract a crowd. It's about building the band up again. The guys have had a year without a bass player, so a lot of work getting their name out there has been somewhat lost. Differentiating your band from the crowd seems to be key, standing out a bit, having a sound, some character. I'm afraid, and it's going to be an unpopular thing to say, but there are a lot of covers band who look and sound very similar. A lot of that seems to be down to people of my age+ who in their 20's and early 30's were in originals and now still want to play and start a covers band. 4 middle aged men playing the music of their youth in lots of pubs up and down the country is going to wear thin over time. I love the band I've just joined, I've only been in it for 3 weeks. It's not only about playing live to get your stuff out their but about writing and recording, getting that idea in your head out there and working with others to get what you hear in your head to become a reality. If I wasn't in something creative, in a band or collective who was writing music, then the bass would get sold off. It doesn't have to necessarily be gigging. Gigging isn't the be all and end all. I wouldn't be as enthusiastic about sticking at playing and gigging if it were a standard covers band. People can regard that as snobbish if they want, but I don't get my musical kicks from playing Sex On Fire to whip a crowd up.
11. Let down by a mate, who was going to buy it, so re-available. £230 inc postage (if req).
12.
Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction: Tattooed Beat Messiah etc.
...and the winner has been found. That's a great album. Unfortunately lots of people don't 'get it'. Splendid choice.
13. Bass travels for much longer. I did a gig in a marque and couple of years ago near a residential area. The next Monday one of my wife's work colleague's, who lived in the area, was whinging at work that all he could hear at his house was the 'bloody bass from some do up the road' I once couldn't a bass part I was trying to figure out. I put the song on my car stereo, got out of the car, closed the door and walked about 30ft away...the bass part stood out a mile. Wicked!
14. I got my B1.on (brand new) for £41 inc p&p from a seller on Amazon. It's perfect for home practice. Headphones in, iPod or other music source and bass...sorted
15. Zoom B1.on and good headphones.
16.
OK, Question time. What is this bass: That's right! It's a Fender Postmodern Journeyman Relic Jazz bass. Yep, a Jazz bass. More reasons why the Fender team are probably on crack and trying to sell stuff that it isn't what it purports to be. P
Being custom shop it'll cost a fortune for the look of a modded bass ( someone stuck a jazz neck on a p bass, wow!). They really have to sort out their product lines regards instruments. Amps don't seem too bad, but guitars and basses are a mess and they'll really suffer if something isn't done.
17. Another for Peter Gabriel - So. It stands head and shoulders above, for me.
18. Pedals seem to be the thing. GK has a preamp pedal out, the EBS Sheehan deluxe sig and the Tech21 Fly Rig. Google Fender Tele Offset (I can't bring myself to post a picture of it ). It perfectly sums up Fender at the moment. They really need a new senior management team.
19. http://www.samsontech.com/hartke/products/amplifiers/tx-series-amplifiers/tx600/ Valve pre like the LH series. I'd be interested to hear how that tone stack works.
20.
Now that sounds like an original band! How did you mic up the brick wall?
It's how the Blockheads started out.
21. So the birthday chap has found out your band charge £200 for pubs and wants the same deal? If he only wants to pay your 'pub' price you could give him a pub set. Turn up at 8pm set up, do 2 sets and leave Maybe ask him what he's expecting. If he's wanting more than a pub set then explain the price goes up (and maybe suggest he asks how much a DJ would cost all night) Personally, I don't get involved in that mates rate stuff. I was asked to do a party for someone's mate once and they didn't want to pay anything. I was told there'd be food and drink in it for you. The thought of a buffet and cola all night made my stomach turn. I said I was busy.
22. I am, probably, one of the most anxious people you'd would likely meet...racked with self doubt. However, I have in the last 6 years of playing bass again turned up for numerous auditions where I knew no one in the room. In that time I've never failed an audition. The bands have never lasted very long, but I've never failed to get in. I have passed on auditions for bands where I've thought the material will take too long to learn or it just doesn't interest me. All I've done to get in a band is learn the material as close as possible to the recording, no one has a crystal ball to know what 'slant' the other members of the band will be taking. Even for the originals band I've just joined, where the guys said I was the only bass player to have even attempted to learn the songs. Do your homework. One of the reasons though that I'm loathed to join another covers band is the 'blagging' approach is all to prevalent. Turning up, you've learnt the structure and at least the important signature parts and the rest of the band can't even say what the song title is. I got caught several times like this. One was where a drummer couldn't be arsed to learn the proper rhythm to 'Ain't no sunshine'. I had to modify my part and it sounded complete trash. Another where drummer and guitarist/vocalist couldn't even be bothered to refresh their memories of the songs they used to do. I figured out that they used to rely on the former bass player to learn the song properly and they worked off of him. This blagging method is why I won't even watch covers bands, too much of it going on. Band members stand there like statues not interacting with the audience because their too busy try to figure out what they're supposed to be doing...it needs to be in your head before you get on the stage.
23. Regards the Rumble 200, it is an option. I've got the Combo 500 (which I'll be using for gigs and if I need to get it louder buying the 210 ext cab) and it's great. However, as any head I'd be buying would be going through a tatty old, brand unknown, 410 I'd probably end up spending most of my time tweaking the controls as the cab would make the Rumble sound a little different anyway. Also, I'm a gear whore and thought as it's a practice amp I'd try something else The Fender is also, from what I can find on line about the same as the GK (both about £220-35)
Difficult choice Marvin! I had a Markbass Little Mark 250 Black Line, a TC BH250 (in a combo) and a GK MB500. All have been reliable and all sound decent so you should listen to each model before deciding. I prefer the GK and Markbass, both sound great but distinctively different and both have good noiseless DI output which is crucial for me. GK MB200 wins on pure portability. GK amps built in USA too! Markbass wins on classic warm sound. Love the VLE & VPF controls. Lack of mute switch is a bit irritating. With regard to tone and sound quality I cannot tell the Blackline apart from the more expensive Little Mark 500. TC electronic wins on extra features such as built-in tuner, toneprint etc. To my ears TC electronic amps do not seem as loud as equivalent rating GK or Markbass gear. Both of my TC electronic amps have noisey DI outputs without a ground lift, so If I play larger gigs I need a separate D.I. Box If had to choose one I would go for the Markbass 250 Blackline, (and keep the GK MB200 as an amazing spare in my gigbag!!!) Good Hunting
Thank you, that is very informative and helpful. Cheers
24. I know these threads are a ball ache for some , however I just want to know people's experiences of the following heads. Gallien Krueger MB200 Markbass Little Mark 250 Black Line TC Electronic BH250 They all cost a similar amount. I'm more interested in reliability, loudness and quality of build and their 'sound'. The Fender Rumble I have has a tone I really like and of course there is the Rumble 200 head to throw in I suppose. The reason I'm toying with getting one is the band I've joined has got it's own practice room. However, it's in the roof space of a recording studio and although my Rumble 500 is light etc, even getting that up the narrow stairs can be very tricky. I could leave the rumble in the room but when the band aren't there the room can get incredibly cold and I'm not really one for leaving gear in environments that can basically freeze There's a 410 cab in the room so all I'd need is a head. Ta
25. If you can get to the Bass Gallery you could try a Big Baby 2 http://thebassgallery.com/big-baby-2.html
