Esperanza Spalding Rocking it on Jimmy Kimmel
Marvin replied to SICbass's topic in General Discussion
I thought it very good, and it's not something I'd usually listen to. More to my surprise was that my wife liked it, and if there's anyone who needs a hook in a song it's my wife -
I went to a gig last night where the supprt band' s bass player was using a Rumble 500 combo with a Fender Jag. It was DI'd through the PA but you could hear it was a Rumble, especially when the headline band came on after. The headline band's bass player was using one of those old little orange Ashdown amps and IEM's so the difference was clear. The Rumble really sounded good. Nice to see it being used in a good sized venue as well. This was a local arts centre, about 250 capacity I think with a 25ft (ish) high ceiling.

Money no object? Easy, Aston Martin and sod playing bass

There does seem to be a gulf between contributing members and selling members now, which I think is a bit of a negative for the site. It used to be that we had contributing members who sold and bought so much they'd get their leg pulled continually for it. I feel an influx of £150 cheapos is exactly what the marketplace needs

I think the BassChat market place has changed quite a bit since I've been here. The amp section maybe not so much but the bass section is dominated by high end gear it seems. There's very little in the £200-£500 bracket and less still in the under £100. There's also a considerable number of mainland European sellers, not a bad thing, but the reach of the site has definitely broadened. There seemed to be considerably more trading and dealing in lower value basses a few years ago. You don't see many Squiers etc.

I've only got the 500 combo as well. However, I've downsized to the 500 from an Ampeg 410 and I am pleasantly surprised at how loud this little 210 combo is. I could feel the sound on the back of my legs the last time I used it. The guys I was playing with got a bit fed up of me say "damn it this thing is loud". Fender seem to provide a lot of volume in their gear. I owned the V2 350 combo and that was always kept up with the band I was in, and the drummer was very heavy handed. A V3 500 head with 2 410's I should imagine would have plenty of ooomph, a different sound but I'd guess it would have plenty of guts. I used an old V2 500w head and V2 410 a few months back and that was loud and I was very impressed with the tone...but then I've come to realise I'm a Fender amp man

I've only played through a fridge once (an Ashdown MAG 810 in a rehearsal room). It was great fun. The presence of the sound was what got me. Fridges are awesome! ....until you have to move one. Even wheeling it across the rehearsal room wasn't much fun. I think it weighed more than me. :-/

It shows a lack of respect to other people in the audience. I'm talking from a punters perspective not as someone in a band.

I'm with BRX on this one. At a venue in particular, where you've paid to get in, I don't want to hear how Kev and Daz were down last weekend and what a great time they had. I'm there to enjoy the music, not some knuckle dragger's life story. It's a major problem in venues where I live.

Gimmick or Innovation (or just the best bass for metal!?)

A gimmick and a clumsy one at that. -
Lovely looking bass there. I was very tempted to go for the burst when I bought my Sire but went for black, I'm dark like that If Sire produce a P bass I'm in real trouble as I'm skint

Mustang Sally. Oh how I love that song. I smile from ear to ear every time I get to play it.

Poll, how many many basses have you got?

I've got 3, but I really should get around to selling one to be honest. -
excited with playing with their drummer.
That bit might need rephrasing, just saying. It's just there are so many smutty folk on this site, it might get misconstrued or some such something or other, or not. -
That needn't stop you. I only know 4 chords, and three of them are E.
There's more than one E chord? That's me done for right there -

Good drummer and a good singer in any band. The drummer is for me , the singer for the audience...everything else can just about fluff things by and nobody tends to notice. In one of my more relaxed moments in a band, when I wasn't overly worried about a lot, the singer asked me what to do about the lead guitarist. I asked what the problem was and he replied that the lead guitarist didn't play the lead breaks to the record. And? I asked. "well, doesn't it bother you?" mr vox asked. I said it didn't because I very rarely listened to him, our drummer was bang on the button and the singing was good so the band sounded tight and the audience were happy with the warbling, no problem in my book. The guitarist could do what the hell he wanted, it was always in key so what was to worry about -
New cheap Marcus Miller endorsed range of basses - Sire
So I asked the question... And received the answer via Facebook PM yesterday... Sire DO plan to release a P-bass. But can't say when or anything about the specs.
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!! They can't, they're not allowed. I'll have to buy it, I'll have to. Oh jeez, I've got GAS already and I've not even seen it. AAAGGGGHHHH! -
I think it's a great rock album. Great playing, great songs. If anything I'd say this sounds more a band album than the first. The first album has Kotzen stamped all over it (nothing wrong with that IMO ). There's alaways going to be a lot of Kotzen in these albums though as he seems to put more into and spends more time on them. Sheehan and Portnoy are always on other projects. Kotzen has been playing figerstyle for some time now, his last 3 albums and definitely the previous Winery Dogs album. For me, combined with using a tele, really works IMO. It's less cliché. Sheehan has changed his set up lately, and this may account for being less obvious in the mix. I was fortunate to see them play last year and it was brilliant. Kotzen made my jaw literally drop, he's that good. He is rock.

Very similar issues where I live. A lot of folk/acoustic acts, punk, metal or classic rock/rock covers bands. If you're past your mid-20s originals are seemingly off limits, so you're stuck with covers bands playing very familiar sets. There's also a bit of a closed shop feel to the place.
I say, guys waiting for that perfect band with all the material you happen to like could be waiting a long time. Most guys I know that are in gigging bands and making money had to make compromises on several levels. For me, good musicians, good honest trustworthy band members, and a solid book of good paying gigs trumps material any day of the week. Blue
Gigs don't pay enough for me to play material that would make me cringe. If all that's on offer is playing Sex on Fire etc, I'll go fishing.

I know of several musicians who have absolutely no interest in playing live. Their motivation and wants from music are entirely satisfied by the writing and recording process and that whole creative side. There is no right and wrong way in pursuing one's musical goals, hence those who don't want to perform live, get the seal of approval from a group of strangers watching them perform, are as valid in their aims as anyone else. There's nothing superior, in my view, about performing over someone who doesn't choose to. I personally like gigging. Rehearsals are good fun but I prefer the discipline you have to have to play live, the pressure to get it right. I'm not really in it to have my ego stroked or garner the adulation of audiences. If I gig then it has to be with the right set up. I could probably get in a gigging band tomorrow, there's an ad of a band I know looking for a bass player. However, it's not a band for me, mainly the material...I'd rather burn my favourite bass than play their set list ( and play in the places they want to play).
If we're mentioning guitars, I have one -- the classic Pawn Shop Acoustic. Everybody should have one
Wouldn't be of any use to me, I can't play guitar (And I mean that genuinely, I can't play guitar at all)
