Very interesting read regarding streaming services.
That wouldn't trouble me at all, in the same way as supermarkets charge customers for the goods they've bought in plus their costs and profit margin. Why music should be any different in principle escapes me. The mechanism has to differ, as the product is intangible, but the principle of Spotify (or any other commerce...) earning their living is fine by me.
How are you going to pay the musician they're making money from? -
OK then, carry on with the present system. If all is well, there's no requirement for change, everyone is 'hunky dory'. I'm just an old buffer with strange ideas on several subjects, many of which are not popular today, or which imply a change in the status quo. No matter; let the music play and ignore me. If there's no problem, there's no need for any solution. As you were.
People making money isn't the issue for most, as it seems to be for yourself. The issue with regards musicians is that a third party is making a lot of money out of their efforts. Many on here, it seems, feel that if money is being made then the split should be swing more to the person or persons whose music it is. -
I listened to the Radio4 programme, I decided it was good. Noel, he seems a decent sort really. From what he's said in interviews he seems very grateful to the people who've bought and liked his songwriting. Liam I can tolerate when noise, of any sort, isn't emanating from his oral cavity.
Ah..! Progress, maybe. These are better questions and merit reflection and ideas. Once the principle is established, one can go through a whole host of possibilities and options. This could entail further mind-set changes, as it's not so simple to just reply glibly; that's too easy. Nevertheless, are we agreed that, as long as the work is paid for, that, in itself, is then sufficient..? I'm all for someone paying, each and every time that work is done, but my thinking would put an end to the notion of becoming rich by penning a 'hit' song. If one spends a day composing, one gets paid for that day (how..? We'll have to see...). If one take a year to compose, one should be paid for that year. The simplest manner would be to have an employer (an organisation, such as the MU, or the Arts Council, or a private mecene..? Who paid Mozart..?). That debate is, to me, more interesting than squabbling over the royalties of a dead relative. Why should musicians not be paid a decent hourly rate, like fitting a kitchen..?
So musicians become the employees of wealthy benefactors...and churn out elitist nonsense for the musical equivalents of Charles Saatchi. OR, they have to work for a closed shop run by the taste police. How would a body like the MU or Arts Council decided whether they should 'employ' a musician or no? Would it be if a board of knowledgable muso journalists like their music? Or would they just employ everyone who decided they wanted to be a musician? How many people have become 'rich' by penning a hit song? Really, how many? And in what way is that much different than someone coming up with a business idea, say like an internet 'business', and cashing out as soon as it became popular?
I would consider that, too, to be progress. I see nothing sacrosanct in this 'supply and demand' link. Wordsworth did not write poems with that as a 'driver'. Other examples are available. There are other 'models', once one chooses to look for them.
Other models have all failed. -
Yep, good to hear. It's a shame that the bass section of the actual shop is quite frankly pitiful.

I've taught myself all the diabolical habits, poor techniques and total lack of theory knowledge I could. It's no surprise I'm no longer in a band really.

I'm liking it too. I've been listening to his solo material lately and have got into it. Odd, as I never really got into Oasis.

I'm just watching Noel Gallagher's set. His bass player's tone is rather lovely. Fender P bass through a Fender 810 (mic'ed not DI). Niiiiiiice.

Building and builders merchants are fantastic for mixing it ALL up. 12mm ply in an 8'x4' sheet please. I need a piece of 2"x4" that's 3m long and so on
"Every media brand is on a journey into a digital future. That doesn't mean leaving print behind, but it does mean that print has to change. The future is an exciting place, and NME just kicked the door down."
This speaks volumes...it'll probably be out of business soon.

Best place to buy mp3s that's not iTunes or Amazon?
Marvin replied to velvetkevorkian's topic in General Discussion
Depends on one's definition of 'rich rock star' I suppose. I've found material by artists on that site that are in no sense of the word 'rich'. 270+ gigs per year, traveling in beaten up vans that need fixing on numerous occasions before you can get to the next gig, self financed albums and a modest house when they get home. All so someone with server space and a bank account can get rich from their efforts. -
How many basses have you bought off the Basschat marketplace?
Marvin replied to Highfox's topic in Bass Guitars
Only bought 1 bass on here, sold it back to the seller. -
A p with a j neck you say. A proper bass then
I'm not sure how much ply you've seen but I can assure you that categorically isn't true! The phenolic adhesive which holds ply together does not fill the voids.
Absolutely. I have a work bench I made out of 18mm Far East Ply and it's got so many voids it looks reminiscent of Emmental. You can massive voids in cheap far east ply, I've used it quite a lot for various things, and the adhesives used to stick it all together goes no where to filling the voids.

I played an Ibanez SR and a Yamaha TRBX before I bought the V7. Both the Ibanez and Yamaha have thin necks, jazz (38mm) nut and are very shallow from front to back. The V7 is a bit thicker from front (fretboard) to back, but it's not something that's given me any problems. Actually, I've found I quite like that little extra thickness. I find it very comfortable to play and I've got the crap fingers for playing any musical instrument.

I saw Dan's review and it's what a review should be. It's also backed up by a more in depth written piece. They don't call Dan Dood for nuffin'
-
I don't know what bored me more, the new Muse album or this 'review'. I've heard the new Muse album and was underwhelmed by it. It's not as daft as the last two efforts, but it's just a bit meh! After you've read one of that blokes, so called, reviews you've pretty much read them all. Formulaic, derivative....
He is not bring commissioned though is he? He is a freelance whose trade is being restricted
He was being hired by a publication. If he doesn't get paid for the photos he took don't get used that's between him and the publication. Swift, clearly regards her image as she does her music and wants as much control as possible. If she wants control over where her image appears that's entirely up to her. The photographer states that taking photos at concerts barely covers costs, so don't do it. Doing certain gigs for bands isn't economical, so they don't do it. His reasoning doesn't stack up.

As already stated, don't forget the batteries and don't leave it with the jack. Personally I leave the EQ on an active centred and use the EQ on an amp to tweak my sound. Although, why having bass, treble and possibly middle frequency controls on a bass is confusing is baffling it itself...just adjust them if you feel you need to. It's not complicated.

Taylor Swift's music is still not available on Spotify so I doubt very much if this is some PR stunt. She's an established artist with enough clout to make Apple look like a greedy corporate arse. Thankfully it'll mean musicians won't be footing the bill for Apple's new experiment (which will probably flop anyway).
And finally, here it is!
That's a TRBX305. Firstly, Yamaha don't do the 500's in bright red. What you're describing as the single switch along the top line of knobs and the knob along the bottom is probably the light reflecting off of the screws that keeps the the 'performance EQ' selector in place. It's definitely a 305.
