1. OutToPlayJazz and his review on TalkBass is to blame for all of this silliness.
2.
At the risk of coming across as unsympathetic, think if you live somewhere "off the beaten track" then you really can't expect to be well served by live music and especially so if your tastes run mainly to bands from the US. I know because I spent a year living somewhere like that in the late 70s. During that time there were a grand total of 8 gigs locally by known touring bands of which only 1 was a band that I really wanted to see. Most tours didn't come any further west than Cardiff which meant either getting the train (expensive and you ended up spending the night on the station platform as there were no trains back after the gig finished) or hitching (no one I knew had a car back then). Fed up with all of this I moved to Nottingham, was going out to gigs at least once a week and all by bands that I actually wanted to see (and that was before Rock City had been built!) And who actually GOES to see covers bands? From my own experience my covers band audience were either friends of the band members or people who would have been in the pub anyway. When I've been in the audience at a covers band gig it's either because I know someone in the band or because I'm there to check out the venue on a gig night. I can't help but think that the majority of the audience would be better served by a well-stocked juke box hooked up to a decent sound system.
I wouldn't argue with you at all. The location and demographics of where I am tend to work against me. Small example, I went to Wolverhampton last year to watch a band I desperately wanted to see...by the time I got back in the early hours of the morning I had 2 hours of sleep before having to be at work. If I was in my 20's it wouldn't have been an issue and although I'm not old, it still takes several days to get over doing something like that.
3. The height of the tone and volume controls isn't really an issue. It's not something that shouts out when you're playing the bass. (yeah! I didn't use the word knob...damn, I just did...stupid brain)
4.
Oh God, really? Well I sincerely hope you like it!
Ha ha now you know how I felt
5. From a punter's perspective, I'd say live music is struggling to appeal to me. I don't go and watch covers bands or tributes generally and the original bands on offer just aren't doing it for me. Most of the artists and bands I'm listening to are usually from the US and don't gig over here...even if they did they don't gig within an 8 hour round trip to see them.
6.
I guess you could take each song requested and apply one of the following if you cant do it correctly straight away .... 1. If it can be simplified without ruining the song (I often here bands omit bass parts in songs like Rio, Town called malice etc. It gives me the hump, but not sure many other people care or notice). Then do it 2. If you think you need time, say OK I can nail this, but I need time before trying it out with the band 3. If you think its something you cant do in the near future then reject it, saying you cant do it justice right now, its good to try hard, but you must have standards for gigs
I'd go with this. Lots of people simplify parts and most if not all of the rest of your band won't know how the bass line is supposed to be played anyway. There's stuff I've said no to because I can't play it. It's too fast usually. Sometimes other band members get a bee in their undercrackers because it's a personal favourite and they really want to do it but... TOUGH!!!
7.
Er... Bay.
Is that when one cautiously bids for an item on a well known...um...auction site?
8. I'm ambivalent about it all...as would be expected.
9. It's going to be a mammoth task to wade through all the puns to make a column, regardless of anything else
10. I had my hearing tested properly a few months ago and had a very interesting discussion with the Audiologist who conducted the test. My hearing starts to tail off at about 8khz. That doesn't mean I can't hear anything above 8khz, just that as frequencies increase from there on it gets more difficult for me to hear them. Saying that however, at 12khz my hearing spikes back up slightly then tails off again. There's also a dip at 4khz. As sounds are made up of more than just the fundamental frequency created, in some instances it means I lose the clarity of some sounds and find higher pitched sounds more difficult to hear...mainly Mrs Marvin saying 'no! you're not buying another bass!' Due to hearing being a very personal thing, as such, that's why you can have situations where a particular frequency will cause great discomfort to an individual despite it maybe not being particularly loud. Everyone's hearing is, apparently, totally unique. I went to get my hearing tested as I find it difficult hearing people speaking to me when I'm in a crowded room e.g a busy pub. If someone is sat across a table from me, their voice is drowned out by background noise...that however is not because of my hearing loss but is simply down to the way I hear things. I also I have tinnitus, which is an audio hallucination, for want of a better expression. It's a sound that you can hear but doesn't actually exist.
11. Without blind buying the market place on basschat would probably cease to be I've bought my last 4 basses blind and had no problems. My last purchase isn't even available in the UK so had no option. Glad I did.
12.
could well be comedy genius there. Have a like on me 😀
Thank you ☺
13. I'm not selling my V7, and I'd agree, you have to remind yourself how inexpensive these basses are.
14. I haven't tried it but I'd say no, a standard Fender pg won't fit. The thing that stands out are the screw hole placings and that it's only a 9 hole pg, most Fender guards seem to be 10 hole.
15.
It seems to only feature pictures of the "good" posters/contributors !!
Why's my avatar on there then? ☺
16. I used Interparcel/UPS when i last sold gear on here. My only quibble was that the site offered collection between 9am and 1pm. Although this wasn't guaranteed 4.45pm was a bit naff. Otherwise no problems
17.
Looks as if KMC have all the non-core brands like Takamine now. Fender concentrating on their core business and letting everything else sink or swim under a holding company?
It certainly looks that way, they've hived off everything they didn't know what to do with...some good brands there as well 😕
18. It's the number of basses that is required to quell your GAS....which could be quite a lot
19. There have been a few discussions on Facebook involving members, both those still here and those who have left, that have raised Wayne being banned. The mods, 3 or 4 of them, who have commented have eluded to there being a more involved back story to the banning than maybe has been let on by Wayne himself. And the mods who have spoken, albeit wisely in a limited way, are decent guys. I got on with Wayne. I did a couple of good deals with him. However, in recent months I think his posts become unnecessarily antagonistic, not that it bothered me, I just ignored them. I did notice on a couple of occasions mods pick him up publicly. He broke the rules, he got banned.
20.
Better known as Sting.
His brother Gordon plays scrum half for WASPS.
21.
I like to cut the scone in half, then spread jam before cream on one half and cream before jam on the other, people just can't cope with that.
I think you're being unduly provocative, please stop now.
22.
I particularly like the photos
What photos? Are you sure you've posted on the correct thread?
23. I have the rumblings of GAS. I've been waiting for a review of one these cabs in a live situation and this is all very positive, all the more so since I currently own a 410hlf. Definitely food for thought
24. It is somewhat odd that the forum is being portrayed as a bear pit of bad temper and arguments on the one hand and then tBBC always crops up as some marker of the halcyon days of basschat. Troll doesn't even come close, i don't share others nostalgia for his continuous offencive posts. Several of the old guard who have 'left' were as ready as anyone to engage in a rigorous debate...what it seems now is critisised as being argumentative. There's always been big bust ups on basschat...usually in the early hours of the morning. And one has to ask one's self, how many times can one discuss the pros and cons of flats over rounds
