  1. I actually find copying other people's songs more difficult (most covers bands don't cover a song they try to copy it). You get given a song to play and the part or line is occasionally counter to what you might intuitively play, or hear. Perhaps it's because I'm inatetely lazy I prefer to just play what I feel...which is what I've only been able to do in the couple of original bands I've been in.
  2. Robert Plant on Desert 🏜 Island discs this morning, hopefully it should be on iplayer
  3. Nirvana - Come as you are.
  4. The Sire preamp has a 'baked in' sound, I'd like something that's maybe a bit flatter or neutral.
  5. I'm contemplating replacing the preamp in my V7. Ideally it'd be something relatively staight forward to fit, maybe a John East but I'm not sure which one. Any pointers, advice etc gratefully received
  6. Sounds like an 'donkey' to me. I can't stand 'lads'/'blokes' band, it's like you've inadvertently turned up at a Roy Chubby Brown gig. ...so I'd not bother with that one 🙂
  7. I've not had a notification since Monday afternoon. I use the default theme on both mobile and desktop. Edit: as above, when answering a topic I'm having to refresh the page for it to appear. Otherwise it just hangs at 'saving'. Hope this helps a bit.
  8. If the bedroom is of an adequate size, then this is all he'll need.... ...and maybe a couple of roadies if he ever wants to move it, but it looks damn cool.
  9. Their Sharing Spaces album is great. I think Cog split up for a while so didn't release any new material.
  10. Unless you've had a rack full of flashing lights and all looking very complex, then quite frankly you're not serious about being a bass player. I got rid of mine because I didn't understand any of it, all I was interested in was having lots of lights and lights flashing.
  11. A first for me. Made myself 2 new instrument cables. Not the greatest of soldering but tidy enough for OCD 😆 I'm quite chuffed.

Excellent!  I taught myself to do it during the first lockdown and found it most satisfying.  Since then I've done a couple of full wiring installs to my basses, made up a load of custom patch leads for my pedal board, and changed the plugs on a couple of leads.  Great fun, and the more you do it the better you get (and quikcly too)!

@franzbassist I made a bit of a hash of the first one, it works but it seemed to take forever.  The second one took a matter of a few minutes.  It's very satisfying. I've got some cable left over that I'll make up some short leads with.

  12. Andertons have Sire P5's for less than £400. I think the V5's are also under £400. Sqiuers, loads of them around. You can't really go wrong with the to be honest. My Squier Vintage Modified P bass was only £150 second hand, but that was before prices went a bit silly. Mate of mine has the Stirling, he loves it. I must admit it sounds great. I'm probably one of the only people on here who is at best indifferent to Yamaha's. The one I had was no better built than my cheaper Ibanez and was the dullest sounding bass I've ever owned. Ibanez are good. If you need spares for them though, in my experience, they're awful. G&L, as others have said, is good stuff. I know a few who play then
  13. I don't play busy at all. That's nothing to do with confidence, it's that I've no idea what I'm doing.
  14. I think I've mentioned this before. A band I was in about 10 years ago. I was a bit green, not having gigged really before. The guitarist was a real gadget freak and a bit OCD. We played our first gig in a pub that could hold maybe 80 people, maybe it was more I don't know. Gig started at 8pm, the guitarist who owned the PA gets there at 1pm, to set up. He had a BIIIIG mixing desk, a snake box to take the 'stage' sound to the mixing desk (which was on the 'stage' with us), the speaker stack was taller than me, he'd mic'd the drumkit with 5 mics...and on and on and on. A few things happened that night. First off, he'd borrowed some sub cabs from the singer, but forgot to use a crossover in the signal chain. Hence all the sound was trying to go through the subs and you could barely hear a thing out front, bar a horrid mush. We ended up turning the floor monitors around to face the audience so they could at least hear something other than a bassy mush. Next, the guitarist, rather than have another guitar ready that was detuned, decided to use a pedal that did this for him. This was fine for the song it was intended for however, he forgot to reset the pedal for the next song...he proceeded to play the next song a half step down, which sounded really bloody awful. It's worth pointing out that he had another two guitars, on stands, next to him that he didn't use all night (and a keyboard). Which brings us to the next little nugget. The guitarist had so much equipment and such a large pedal board that after he set it up he'd basically trapped himself where he stood. What baffled me was that I was by far the least experienced in the band and thought the set up was way over the top...the others thought it was all fine to play a moderately sized pub with a PA that could be used a a decent sized theatre 🤪
  15. Whatever I feel like on the day, night...when/whatever. Even if I wear a long sleeve shirt though, I always roll the sleeves up a couple of turns because I don't like my cuffs flapping against my bass...but then I always wear my shirts like that, even when I'm not playing.
  16. What a fine howdy do. I'm signed off for 2 weeks with Labyrinthitis,  middle son tested positive for Covid this morning,  wife still feeling after effects of covid 3 months on.

    What a crappy day.

I've been prescribed some tablets, I can't remember what they are called but they take the edge off.  It's the most irritating thing I've had.

My brother phoned me today, first time in ages, asked how I was. He nearly wet himself when I said that on Thursday evening I was so dizzy I nearly fell off my beanbag (I rarely sit on the sofa).

Had that last year - mental! Got out of bed, fell on the floor. Stood up - fell on the bed. Wee doctor was excellent - said it's either an infection or dehydration. I drank litres of water a day and it was gone two days later. `Hope yours clears top quickly.

I'm suffering from it at the minute - unfortunately looks as if it could be Menieres though.

  17. I've never had any taste...
  18. I won't touch frets, the nut or active electronics (unless it's a loose wire). Everything thing else is straightforward. I'm not great with a soldering iron, but I'll happily repair or change passive circuits in a bass. My brother's mate had a p bass that just made a low buzzing noise when plugged in. I told him it was probably just a loose earth wire. Neither would touch it, so my brother brought down to me from Bristol (about 130 miles) to fix 🤪.
  19. It could crash the whole site. It's a very worrying development
  20. My autocorrect is on something really odd.

'I'll get my coat' became 'I'll get my case widget'.

    😲🤪

  21. Gives you quite a boxy tone, apparently. I'll get my coat.
  22. That's probably considered quite lumpy, as it's just over 11lbs. My 1st generation V7 is about 9¾lbs, my Squier VM Precision a few ounces lighter. I'm not someone to worry too much about the weight of a bass however, 5kg is getting a bit heavy imo...that's assuming Bax have their information correct, I've never seen Sire quote the weight of any of their instruments.
  23. D'Addario Chromes. They've been on there 3 or 4 years. I restrung my Jazz with rounds about 6 months ago, but they only stayed on a week. I suppose I've got very used to flats.
  24. Not true at all. Hermes is a private German company...owned by another German company called otto.

    What happened?

I sold my first bass to a mate. It was a truly dreadful Westone Spectrum II. My mate asked me a couple of years ago if I wanted to buy it back. I politely declined...especially when I found out it had a nice split in the headstock.
