Thanks, Rich. I'll ask him! I think ultimately the plan is to go to the States, but I'm not yet au fait with Hat's world domination plan...
I wasn't thinking that far west to be honest, more sort of west of Bristol but east of say Falmouth

Spotify, very very impressed, anyone else use it ?
Marvin replied to tonybassplayer's topic in General Discussion
I use the free version, mainly for making up playlists of the material of the band I'm in. It's also good for finding new music and 'testing' new albums to see if I actually want to buy them I don't need it for on the move. There aren't that many ads tbh, and what there are are mainly Spotify desperately wanting you to sign up to the premium service. -
Top notch Mark You'll need to get Cowboy Hat to venture west, there's a good Americana following around these here parts...it is the west after all

Ed Friedland's reviews are the only ones I've ever given any time to...and they are very good actually. (obviously this contradicts my previous statement....but to be honest I simply don't care )

I don't take any notice of YT demos or soundclips of basses or amps. When it's in my hands it'll sound very different so it seems somewhat of a redundant exercise to watch/listen to someone else playing an instrument etc.

Don't you just hate really talented kids?
Whatever happened to tommy McLaughlin ?
I thought the same the other day -
I've gone off marmite
I will always like marmite but will never like peanut butter. I've never found either good for metal though.

Not at a gig but at a practice only a couple of weeks ago...I hadn't touched my gear for months but that's not really an excuse. I set it all up, it was all plugged in and the effects loop was all set up but I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get any sound. I checked the signal path, the volume was turned up, checked the battery in my bass was ok...still nothing. Then it dawned on me looking at the back of my rig that there was no speaker cable from the amp to the cab. D'OH! Also, on my practice combo at home I'm forever putting my bass jack in the headphone socket and scratching my head as to why I'm not getting any output.

Oh that's lovely ... hell, it's happened again :/

How successful are these for you?... assuming you have them. In theory they are a good idea, but my experience is that nothing ever really either a/ gets discussed, and hence b/ nothing gets decided. It just ends up with a " well, I don't mind, I'll go along with what everybody else wants to do..." which has got to be one of the most annoying statements ever.

I always look resplendent and magnificent. Those self assertiveness classes seem to be working a treat

Covers bands - how do you agree on new songs?
Marvin replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
All previous bands I've been in there's always been someone who, although not really a band leader, will push what they want onto the list - not always a success. I'm currently starting with a new band and was quite surprised when I rejected about 6 songs on the list and they all went "Ok, that's fine" I think everyone has to be happy with what they're being asked to play. That doesn't necessarily mean they have to actually have had to have been a fan of the song but see that it works for the band. There's stuff I play that I wouldn't ever listen to at home but will play in a band because it clearly works. -
The basses i want just tend to be active. I don't fiddle with the onboard pre amp, I tend to leave it flat and adjust my eq unit in my rack. Very occasionally I'll tweak the OBP, maybe for a little treble boost during a section of a song but that's it.
-
I use a racked DBX166. I use it soley as an effect and tone changer and not to iron out my crap technique.

I thought it was ok, good entertainment on NYE
Oh i bought them a while back came from a sr500 that someone had put a different set in and different electrics. I think i will go with the sr300 as said i can upgrade the pu's right away and if i don't like bass ive not spent to much. If i like it then i will upgrade later in the year to a better sr model.
Excellent. The barts are quite difficult to get hold of, and new they're quite expensive
-
Where did you get the barts, if you don't mind me asking . I've been looking to get some for my 300

Oh my, what a stunner! I've got to go change my underwear now... :/

I'm staying home

I use right angled in my Precision and Yamaha and straight in my Ibanez as it has a strat style input.

I'd like to be in a band that doesn't implode after one gig
After the first rehearsal you can point out which songs are strong and which are weak. The weak ones will need a lot of (too much) work and even then they probably won't be strong enough. So they'll not be making the cut. People who insist on playing their favourite songs are a liability. You have to play the best songs for the band. You play your favourite CD's when you get home.
I totally agree. The one thing I do loathe are band members who insist on playing personal favourites, it's a recipe for disaster. Most of the time these favourites fail in my experience...and leave the person who suggested them wishing they hadn't because they sound so different. For me it's about finding songs that people will know, that the band can play really well and not having much overlap with other bands in the area you're playing.

Victor Wooten appears on their site and is quoted as saying "Incredible". That's good enough for me. Although I'm not entirely sure what it is he's saying is incredible though
Even published tab books are only created by someone sat down trying their best to decipher what is played, there's no more science than that most of the time.
And the books can be as bad as some online tabs...bits missing, wrong key etc etc. The big publishers are quite bad for it. Stuart Clayton and his Bassline Publishing books are bang on though, others can be very poor in comparison.

The tab looks to give the right line for the song...there are little variations and passing notes on occasion but the tab is the gist of it.
