Can I say I find him quite cheesy?
Yes, yes you can.
Hi Ped - does AdBlock remove the embedded video ads that precede a YouTube vid?
Does for me

I've never owned any lightweight gear, never had the money for it. I've got a s/h 410 that isn't light and a rack mounted amp. I'm lucky at the moment that our drummers husband lends a hand with moving gear about. Although to be honest even at 35kg, I don't actually find my 410 that much of an issue. Forgot to add, it all sounded damned lovely last night when my band practiced in a large village hall
You've got one now!
Cheers you're a gent I was just trying to cause an argument really, I felt uncomfortable seeing a thread where everyone was being pleasant to one another

Disgraceful! I didn't get one

Joe Bonamassa's Dust Bowl. There's some sort of ringing bell noise in it, I keep thinking my mobile is going off
And it's still got a slot for cassette tapes
I thought that a nice touch, a little bit retro

My stand couldn't stand it any more...it fell apart tonight

Any musician that has to be loud to get 'their tone' has bought the wrong gear. Apparently the reason for using large valve amps, say 100w plus is you still get a nice clean tone at what a guitarist would consider a gigging volume. Any smaller and it breaks up at too low a volume. That's what a guitarist told me, and who am I to disagree I'm just a bass player. One guy I was in a band with had one of those blackstar 60w 212 combos. Made your ears bleed on 2

Who stocks these in the UK?
Unfortunately the over-inflated price of concert tickets is the cost of not wanting to pay for recorded music any more.
Absolutely. -
I've never used a music stand, but after reading this thread I'm considering getting one for me and each of the other band members. This should provide an interesting level of cognitive dissonance for the audience at our next gig. "Is it meant to sound like that? It must do, they're all using music stands." "The bass player has been playing the same two bar pattern for three minutes now, why does he keep turning the pages on his sheet music?" I think we'll hide them at the back until we are just about to start playing though. That way, those who would normally flee at the sight of them will have to stay until they've finished their pint at least. Only question is what type of stands to go for. I'm thinking mahogany for a nice warm tone, but painted black to preserve the high-end.
Genius. I might pinch your idea
Vote with your wallet. Abandon the oversold stadium gigs for people who already have too much money, and try supporting your local bands at local venues.
All you get around my way is local bands in the local venues. The venues aren't on any of the 'circuits' so to speak. As a result all you get is a diet of folk, punk or the usual covers bands. It doesn't do a lot for me -
Practically every note the bass plays is underscored with a kick hit... it does make a big difference to the perceived sound of the bass.
In some instances that combination and the way they compliment each other is that 'thing' people are looking for in their tone....

I was just kidding
Anyone care to tell me this ISN'T just the bollocks..!!! Anyway, back on topic. The singer in my last band was absolutely brilliant. She had a great voice and not even at rehearsal did she bring any sheets with lyrics on...on top of that she was playing guitar and had to learn all those parts as well. I was very impressed as every other singer seems to use a stand etc. However, I have watched pub bands where the singer has a stand and they've still been great entertainment
ha oh right,
It wasn't that funny
Well, they all sound pretty flimsy excuses to me

If I offered you a gig for thursday night, 35 songs, 15 you know, 10 you have heard before, 10 are totally new to you and half of the set is in a different key to the record could you do it without any notes at all? Good on you if you can but some people think its ok to take 6 months to learn 20 songs to start a band up with a weekly practice and even then might use notes so I just dont see the problem. Fwiw my own stand has never left the house.
It were a joke, if a flimsy one... COAT ON AND AWAY WE GO
Its likely that a pro function band will have more deps both more often and more of them at once, a band gigging all year round maybe 3 times a week will have people off sick, maternity leave, holidays, work with other bands etc just like us weekend warriors do with our regular jobs, I dont need a set of instructions for my day job but someone bought in to cover my job would for some parts of it, a dep glued to a chart for Mustang Sally might not be the go to guy I agree. The other thing is the fact they are more likely to be playing up to date music almost as quick as it hits the charts (excuse the pun) , or themed music or requested music for first dances etc which are often not known songs worth learning for the regular set. I'm sure there are other good reasons I've missed?
Well, they all sound pretty flimsy excuses to me

Why are function bands let off the hook?
