Any musician that has to be loud to get 'their tone' has bought the wrong gear. Apparently the reason for using large valve amps, say 100w plus is you still get a nice clean tone at what a guitarist would consider a gigging volume. Any smaller and it breaks up at too low a volume. That's what a guitarist told me, and who am I to disagree I'm just a bass player. One guy I was in a band with had one of those blackstar 60w 212 combos. Made your ears bleed on 2

As a result all you get is a diet of folk, punk or the usual covers bands. It doesn't do a lot for me

Anyway, back on topic. The singer in my last band was absolutely brilliant. She had a great voice and not even at rehearsal did she bring any sheets with lyrics on...on top of that she was playing guitar and had to learn all those parts as well. I was very impressed as every other singer seems to use a stand etc. However, I have watched pub bands where the singer has a stand and they've still been great entertainment

I did consider getting a different pre-amp put in at one point...but then I bought another bass and blew all my savings

Some bands use them around here, some not. It doesn't seem to have cause any negative impressions with the audiences. The only time it niggles me is if the singer has had a pop at the rest of the band for not learning their parts...then I tend to stare sternly at their music stand with all the words there for them, hmmmm
