1. It's exactly this sort of audience behaviour that's devaluing live music. It should be frowned upon and the interloper banned from all future live events.
2.
even thinking about singing whilst playing throws my playing out had somebody come up during a song once trying to ask for a request and even thinking about answering her was just too much and i eventually ended up thinking 'go away i cant concentrate on playing and thinking about your question at the same time' and just ended up nodding in the general direction of the bandleader
You are me, I claim your £5 I was trying to run through a song the other day, at home, and the good lady Mrs Marvin asked if I wanted a cup of tea. Even replying 'Yes' was a struggle :/ As for singing...good grief. I've a voice that makes people cry, and not in a good way.
3.
I keep well away from OT threads on BC now and probably the only thing i've learnt is that i'll never ask a bass player about anything other than their bass guitar and equipment.
A good maxim that I adhere to as well OT is a tedious place. It used to be a place of great humour and wit*. Now it just seems to be dominated by confrontation or banality. *I'm not referring to Big Beef Chief, who was a infernal bore IMO.
4.
So having a 100W valve head isn't a problem then Turning the volume down on a guitar changes the sound in a different way to turning the master volume on the amp down. If you use pedals then it can make even more difference. At the risk of repeating myself, 100W amps turned down to sensible levels sound different to low wattage amps running at the same volume (and many, many people prefer the tone of the louder amps in this scenario). Bass players need to stop obsessing over the wattage of guitarists amps. Its irrelevant. What matters is how loud your guitarist is actually running the amp. Arbitrarily insisting that "30W is always enough for a guitarist" is as stupid as a guitarist insisting that "you don't need a bass amp at all, just DI it into the PA".
It's a problem because in most instances the guitarist has very little leeway to turn down their volume. In my experience they barely nudge it off of 0 on the master and it becomes insanely loud, hence they only have two volumes - one is where they make ears bleed, the other is complete silence. Surely it would be better to run gear which they could have more control over.
5.
They were on the line up at knebworth in 79
They're at Sonisphere (Knebworth) this year
6.
Whee, definitely two sides to this one. One band I was in had a drummer who played his kit so incredibly loudly that every time he hit the snare drum I thought I was going to vomit. Consequently I was using an 8X10 and 1KW amp - and that was just for rehearsals. Totally ridiculous! The volume issue was one of the reasons I left that band. Most live bands are much too loud in my opinion (particularly rock bands - surprise), though it does depend a lot on the drummer, as above. A good drummer should be able to play at any volume level and bass players and guitarists should be able to get their sound without being stupid loud, too. I can't think of one single situation where a guitarist would need more than thirty valve watts. 100W guitar stacks are just unnecessary. Hard to say what the landlord thought was 'too loud' without being there, but perceived volume is certainly very subjective!
It didn't go down too well at practice when our guitarist, who has a 100w valve head, proudly said his amp was barely ticking over. I just said all those other watts, he had left to use, were a bit of a waste of time then, weren't they really
7. I've used GAK for things like cases and they were fine. Used Dolphin and Gear 4 Music for a bass and combo respectively and again fine. Most of the online stores seem pretty good, as with any retailer though there always seems to be times when something goes awry.
8.
I thought that had changed recently and pubs no longer needed a license to put on live acts if the capacity was under 250 people? or is that a different license?
I think that was to do with Entertainments Licencing from local authorities.
9.
All Hydrive and AK cabs from Hartke have a three way switch, -6dB, OFF, ON Just a shame the older XL and VX never had this.
Unfortunately I've only had opportunity to use the XL range. I'd like to try out one the AK cabs though
10. As the saying goes There's nothing as overrated as bad sex and nothing so underrated as a great P
11. Our drummer posed the same question a few weeks ago. She thought we needed a PRS licence ,as when she was looking for venues for her wedding, one place told her a live band would need a licence. Clearly the venue wasn't licenced so even a disco would have problems. Venue should be licenced.
12. Oooo, ouch! That aside, it's the one thing I dislike about the Hartke cabs is not being able to switch the tweeter off. I'd play it safe and remove the crossover completely, if you
13. I bought mine, new, 4 years ago for £240. A huge amount of bass for a stupid low amount of money. People are always think I spent a fortune to buy it
14. I thought I'd suggest this calender thing to my band...I wish I hadn't bothered. Trying to nail them on it is like trying to herd cats
15. The Edge doesn't look like a man who uses iPad effects to be honest :/ Regards lightweight gear, most guitarists seem to be stubbornly sticking with 'tradition' and if Fender wanted pointers on lightweight gear then they had Genz Benz to turn to...which they got rid off. Genz Benz, imo, had the potential to become a real front runner in bass amplification...but again it doesn't seem Fender knew what to do with it. In the end we've got a few nice bits chucked in the new Rumble amps (I'll add I quite like them), but there was so much more potential. As for the cabs, meh! A 410 and a 115, hardly groundbreaking. I don't see a 'guitarist' who is mainly noted for using sizeable rack units driving forward an innovation for us bass players.
16. I've never owned a Trace rig, but I'd like to see them back in the game as it were. I do feel they're not stay up with their competitors. I'm not sure where this wooly sound tag comes from, Doug Wimbish never sounds wooly and he's played through TE rigs for years.
17. I have a 15 band eq in my rack and will adjust to suit the room I'm playing in. There's a certain sound that fits with the band I play, however it still means that I'll have to tweak the graphic to get it. We've just changed rehearsal rooms and that required a noticeable shift in eq to get my bass sounding good in the mix.
18. Apparently according to a statement their role will be to help Fender with 'fan engagement'. I assume they mean fans of Fender, afterall I would say U2 are very popular with the non-instrument buying public, I've yet to get the feeling that they have inspired hoards of musicians (I've never met anyone who has said that and the pages here aren't filled with people saying 'I started playing bass when I heard Adam Clayton). They fan engagement angle seems to be back firing already. The announcement itself is going down badly if comments on Fender's social media pages are to go by. Someone wrote on the web somewhere that Fender is a heritage brand...these appointments don't seem to fit with that. Branding is everything, and there will be people who don't want to buy a product that's associated with a certain band quite so closely.
19.
I WANT LEO BACK!!
Quite.
20.
Maybe not synonymous but definitely heavily involved. Both Adam Clayton and Bono have high-end signature Fender/Gretsch instruments and The Edge has done a number of interviews and promo stuff for Fender (most recently talking about the Telecaster in the promos for the 60th anniversary edition Telecaster)...
Most would associate the Edge with Gibson ( an Explorer being his first guitar). The other two use their guitars as costume jewelery. They haven't had a long term relationship with the brand that Steve Harris has had, for example. Sig models don't really make them Fender people through and through.
21. A poor move by a company that appears to be in trouble. They have a popular, high profile brand but don't seem to know how to make the most of it. I can't see how bringing in 2 people that could potentially put people off the brand and aren't synonymous with the company will help.
22. I'm still waiting for Oxford Bags to come back into fashion, my wardrobe is burst to brimming with them :/
23.
Still seems to be a lot of love for Trace 2nd hand, particularly for the valve amps and specific cabs... Is that yourself in your profile pic, btw??
2nd hand yes, definitely. When you come to people recommending gear though the new TE stuff never gets a mention. I think they've just been left behind. It still looks well made, but it's a hefty price for dated and heavy gear. And yes, that's me in the profile pic
24.
Careful now
To qualify, it was only a Peavey Basic 60 way back when...it was totally inadequate for what I needed, so not Peavey's fault really.
