1. Hi all Looking for your collective wisdom. Considering a professional refinish on a quilt maple top bass which is a keeper. To remain a burst maple quilt top, not to go to a solid colour. I'm looking for recommendations for a pro to do the work. After trawling the forums, I have come up with a list of possibles, and need to know who does the best work, or who has at least the most recommendations. Cost is an issue, but doing a refin twice (if the first time it doesn't look right) is more expensive than getting it right the first time and paying for the proper job, so I'd prefer to go for quality every time. The shortlist goes: Sims Custom (Martin Sims) CA Guitarworks D Wilson Guitars (Dave Wilson) TJC Guitarworks (Terry Chapman) Moon Guitar Works (Jimmy Moon) AJR Guitar mods Rich Lewis (ou7shined on here) I have already been in contact touch with everyone on the shortlist and had responses from the first 4 only. So the list may already be getting narrower. Can I get your collective views on the quality of work and whom you would vote for? EDIT: and pics, if you have them and are willing to share... Thanks Pete
 2. Transcribe! is #1 for looping and playing along with. EQ to try and help bring up deeply mixed bass lines, highlight other parts, etc. Just great software. For many things I'm not writing them down so much anymore - trying to learn it by ear and play it perfectly on the instrument first. Melodies, bass lines, song forms, etc. There isn't always time for me to do this...it's slower than just working it out and writing it down. When I do write it down for just me, often manuscript paper and pencil. If it's a chart for the band, then Sibelius. Some fiddler transcriptions too if I am having a tough time working out rhythms - I'll try different things out in Sibelius. I used to use Noteflight and thought it much easier to use than Sibelius. But I ran into the limit of manuscripts it would let me store on the server and I didn't want to pay ongoing fees, so it withered on the vine for me. I couldn't get musicxml to export properly from Noteflight and have it read well in Sibelius, either. Too much editing needed. PITA
 3.
Thanks, Funkie! Could have been a great combo with your shoreline gold J Classic 4.
It definitely would have been. But the neck is just a bit too wide side-to-side for my tastes, and getting a luthier to shave down the neck would have been a desecration of the instrument. That plus 19mm spacing doesn't work for me on a 5er either, I have learned. Superb bass, though! I don't think it will stick around here for long.
 4. Right, that does it for me. Sergio, I'll take it. PM Sent
 5.
Isn't it the same as the Q6 model, mines 17mm.
No, it's 19mm.
 6. Damn, this hasn't sold yet? I'd buy it myself if it had narrower string spacing. Sweet bass.
 7. Free bump for this bass and a great seller. I corresponded with Rory about buying it and he was kind enough to send me all the neck measurements etc. It was really helpful, as I now know that I would not get on with this neck - that's the only reason I'm now immune to its awesome colour and looks. This bass caused me a sleepless night, but I can now rest easy. Someone is going to love this though.
 8. Free bump for an awesome bass from a good guy. Sergio and I went to music school together, back in the day...this'll have had some good gigs on it!
 9.
I keep on looking at this! It would make a great 'companion' for my blueberry Sklar. Alas, I took out a big loan to pay for the Sklar, so it won't be happening! GLWTS
Thanks. Haven't seen many Candy Blueberry basses kicking around!
 10. Price drop - £480 without the case, shipped in the UK.
 11.
Hi there...I'm using an AI Clarus for 'kitchen' rehearsals along with an EA Wizzy 110 but this cab intrigues me as it's fives I use... would you be interested in any sort of trade for studio gear? If so what type of things are you after?
PM'd
 12. Me either...it's been the 'gold standard' along with my previous Acme B2 for years. But, I'm trying to get more cash for studio type stuff, and the CN112 (though nowhere near as deep or even) is only a little bigger in each dimension and the same weight...and can get a bit louder when needed. The Berg stuff is very much 'bass guitar cabinet voicing', the Acme stuff is as you know more PA-ish in clarity. I'm sacrificing the low end to get a little more volume...
 13. The clear out continues. I've stepped up to bigger cabs for louder volume for the gigs I'm doing, so time to move this one on. I've had this cab 5 years now and it has served me well for rehearsals and jazz gigs at low to moderate volume settings. The lowest tuning of any commercial bass cabinet I know of, a real beauty of a cab for 5 string players (and I heard a difference on a 4). Compact and easy to transport. If you're reading this, you'll likely know the sort of cab it is - 3 way, beautifully even, and able to reproduce the low B fundamental. It works perfectly and has the pole mount option, an additional cost/extra. More details can be found at http://www.acmebass.com/#/home, if needed - I've reproduced the specs below: Specs:

Frequency response: +/-3 dB 41Hz to 22 kHz, -6 dB at 31 Hz
Power Handling: 175 Watts RMS continuous, 150 Watts sine wave @ 30.87 Hz
Sensitivity: 90 dB 1W/1M
Impedance: 8 ohms
Dimensions: 15.75"H x 15.75"W x 13.5"D
Weight: 31 lbs
Beats the pants off a GK MB150 or similarly sized box for low end extension and evenness. I don't know of any similarly small sized box which does what this one does. I've used it with the Tecamp Puma 500 and Streamliner 900 (carefully) with excellent results. A new one of these after shipping and import duties etc. would be in the region of £400. I'll be happy to let this one go to a new owner for [s]£230 + shipping[/s].[s] £200 + shipping.[/s] £200 shipped in the UK. SOLD. Can ship anywhere, but get in touch with me to let me get quotes sorted. Pete
 14. Free bump. What's the other brand you moved to?
 15. Bump. I have a brief photo update which I will get to this weekend.
 16. OK, I tried out a Millennium 5 AC BXP (made in Indonesia), and it was ok. Very much a budget instrument, on closer examination. The sound was good enough, and I thought the B was decent enough. On a par with Ibanezes I've tried. One of the tuners was strangely hard to turn in comparison to the others. The deep black finish was well done and attractive. The model I picked up was very light, so suffered a little neck dive when seated, though none when standing. The monorail system for the bridge is actually fairly fiddly to set height and intonate on and I couldn't lower the saddles enough to get a low set-up. I'd have had to shim the neck or grind the underside of each individual saddle down a little further. The nut slots were cut too high, another annoyance, making first position stiff and difficult. Nothing a luthier couldn't sort out, but again, enough of a faff in conjunction with everything else that I decided I was going to return it. So I did. I think a reasonable enough budget axe, once you took it to a luthier, but the Lakland 55-01 I tried out this week very much surpassed it in a number of ways. The Lakland cost more than twice the price though...even used! I will be receiving a Peavey GV bass this week and look forward to the comparison. USA made, graphite neck, etc. Same body shape and similar pickup system, though...
 17. The original seller has been kind enough to allow me to use his photos. Let's see if this works... http://s1302.photobu.../lakland%205501 EDIT: Hmm, not quite what I expected when I linked...but it is functional.
