I think they have the review on the TC site....
I found quite a few reviews, but not the BGM one, sadly. Anyone able to help out and send me a link to it, if such a thing can be found? Pete

Hi all Anyone have the copy of Bass Guitar Magazine review of the RH450 in issue 43? I only started subscribing at issue 44, and the BGM website doesn't let you examine the full article, for some reason... PM me if you like. Happy nearly New Year everybody! Pete

I've replaced my Lakland DJ4 with a Squier CV 60's Jazz. It sounded better than anything else I played (including Fender Roadworn Jazzes, MIM + MIA Jazzes, and a couple of Sadowskys) and gave me instant GAS the second I heard the bridge pickup tone. I may have some fun with it - maybe install a Graphtech piezo system for a laugh - but it sounds like a Jazz, has a great neck, vintage size frets (which I love), seems built well (though I prefer Hipshot ultralight tuners to the standard Fender ones), and is cheap. I've already cut a Jazz demo with my band - sounded good recorded too! Christmas delivered some nice Hipshot ultralights, so I'll soon have my preferred tuners on there...but really, it doesn't need the upgrade, more just my personal preference. I wonder about changing the stock pickups too - just to see if the Fender CS 60's sound any better - but I can't be bothered at the moment, and the stock pickups are more than good enough to gig and record with. Hi all I'm needing to fund my next amp purchase (have a look over at my feeler thread on lightweight amps and Acmes) and so I have come to the reluctant conclusion that I need to sell my DJ4. As you all know, this bass has now been discontinued by Lakland. It comes with a couple of upgrades - the Hipshot D-tuner and the Aero pickups (not the Laklands) - and comes with an upgraded pickguard (a nice Jeannies sparkly pearl one) as well as the original white one. It has tone for days, an excellent setup (medium low), and it is wearing steel DR 40-100 High Beams. Lovely jubbly! A link to a copy of the Bass Player review is on another thread - I posted it at http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...ost&p=18524. It weighs 9 lbs on the bathroom scales. The original tech specs listed below and are copied from the old Lakland webpage - now vanished... Euphonic Audio iAmp Micro 550, or other lightweight head...
I thought Markbass were similar to EA's micro in that there is an internal jumper to change mains voltage....for some reason they don't want the general public doing this. My iamp micro 550 is simple to change, but you have to remove the top cover to do it. In terms of power, the 550 does not seem to be a "loud" 550 watts. Having said that, it does work beautifully ay full volume. I find the tone section to be poor for bass guitar and am considering getting a Tone Hammer, this I hope will help. My main amp is a Tecamp pumu 1000 which I'm really liking.....much better than the EA iamp 800 it replaced, probably because the preamp offers a much more usable tone adjustment for me. I could never get a good "round" bottom end on the iamp, it just boomed more. You should try the tecamp stuff before making your final decision. Iain H
I'd love to try TecAmp stuff out. It's just so darned expensive! Pete -
Pete, a bit late to this thread, but I'm really happy with my F500 into my ACME, and would definitely recommend the F1 ro F500. It's the best sounding amp/cab combo I've used. However i think it's a bit rubbish how Mark Bass don't do dual voltages. A lot of the smaller heads of other brands offer this, and given that portability is a massive selling point on these heads, I think it's nuts that Mark Bass don't offer it (especially at their relatively higher prices). I can only think that it makes it easier for them to control a flood of cheaper imports from the US into Europe. e.g. $800 in Guitar Centre - roughly £500 at the moment, compared to £750 at GAK. Even once you've added US sales tax at around 8% you could still pick up a bargain over there - as long as you didn't then have the hassle of converting the voltage!! But of course, there's no conspiracy. cheers G
Thanks mate. I'm seriously tempted by a F1 or F500, but the voltage thing is an annoyance. I suspect the same as you to - purely a 'market segregation' thing. Especially annoying when I see the new GB Shuttle 9.0 - bags of power, many good reports, etc. I'm still not sure about the valve pre in it, but if it's clean enough it sounds like a winner. I'm going to try a couple of heads once I'm in the US in Jan. MB are up there, but we'll have to see how it all turns out... -

Any more reviews? I'm GASing for this, to complement my Squier CV...
Thanks for the review. I'm seriously conidering one of the CV basses and will try them as soon as I can. Just a couple of questions please - How much does the CV weigh compared to the American Fender. Also, are there any dead spots ? Thanks again, Steve.
No dead spots on mine. Weighs 9.5 lbs. Not sure about what the American Fender weighs - cue Rich... Pete

Brief update. The Squier CV has completely taken over from my Lakland DJ4. I tried the Squier out with DR sunbeams 40-100. but the Sunbeams were incredibly bright and mid-scooped. Still sounded like a Jazz, but not 'classic' anymore. Lovely feel though - the tension feel was very supple. I played a lot recently to deaden the strings, but they remained very pingy and bright. So - off they came. Instead, I ordered the Fender 7250L NPS set - 40-100 - perfect Jazz tone. Just perfect. Lovely bridge honk (but with the tone knob rolled off a bit, nice bit of bass prominent also), the mid scoop of having both pickups fully on, and pleasant hollowness from the front pickup solo'd. The mids and warmth of these strings is just right on this instrument. Nice feel too, with the lighter D/G strings lending a lower tension feel than the stock strings. You have to hand it to Fender - this is a great bass, and even comes loaded with great strings. Now, I need to stifle my GAS for the James Johnston version - I love blue!
Hi Pete, the VMJ plays just as you'd expect a maple bodied jazz to play. It's very 'top endy' with not quite as much bottom end tone as you'd like, but quite a nice thing. The Classic Vibe is another thing entirely. The Vibe Jazz really has all the bases covered & nails the classic Jazz bass sound totally and completely.
Cool. That's my GAS sorted then!
-
Hey Rich, what did you think of the Squier VMJ vs the Squier Classic Vibe 60's J? Pete
Interesting! Love the pic, Happy. I'd like to upgrade my WTX-260 to a -500 and possibly shift my Compact and Acme B1 and replace them both with a Midget. The mini rig looks like it would actually fit in my place and be properly gig-worthy.
As an aside, let me know if you want to shift the B1. I already have a B2, and I'm looking for a B1 for small rehearsals...

Euphonic Audio iAmp Micro 550, or other lightweight head...

Just for everyone's information. I had also posted my original question over on Talkbass. I have had quite a few responses over there, and thought it might be useful to everyone here to see some of the thoughts from there too. Here is the link: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=595904 Pete -
Euphonic Audio iAmp Micro 550, or other lightweight head...
funkle replied to funkle's topic in Amps and Cabs
My gosh, a stream of replies. In order, then: Bassbod - Thanks for the tips on considering extra EQ with an AI and its 'relative power'. JonnyM - I checked out the megathreads on the GK MB[sup]2[/sup]500 as well, but it looks like a dog in terms of reliability. When they hit revision 4 or 5, I think I stopped reading. And good point about real-world requirements. I'm heavily jazz oriented, generally don't need to worry about loud drummers. Rich - I like tubes well enough, but I also like being able to take them out of the signal. I generally don't use the tube channel built into the Peavey MaxBass I've got. I generally prefer the solid state sound. Heresy, I guess. Fraktal - if what you say about Markbass heads holds true, I'm definitely interested. I liked the LM2 I played through a couple of nights ago, and the thought of picking up an F1/LM2 secondhand and being able to use it internationally is really good news. I'll do some googling. Thanks for all the input gents. Ultimately I guess I'll just have to cough up and try some out. But I'm leaning towards Markbass, as long as I can find that info... -
I'm waiting for my AI Clarus head to be delivered. I've been using an AI Coda R combo. The AI combo makes my bass sound like my bass, without colouration. The Clarus head is also small & light. Good luck with your search. Wil
Thanks for that. Reassuring information! Let us know what you think of the Clarus head when you get it - what cabinet are you going to be using it with?
