Solutions to annoying the neighbours.. :-s
Simon. replied to ZenBasses's topic in General Discussion
I have the Vox Amplug, and for the money, it's very good. Sound quality could be a bit better (there's a bit of background hiss), but it was only £30, is small & compact and does a very good job. If you want to spend a bit more money, something like the sfx H1 headphone amp looks amazing. http://www.sfxsound.co.uk/h1/ A fair number of folks on here have one, and it seems to get universally excellent reviews. Definitely on my GAS list - think they come on at around £130, these days. -
Don't forget this little-known JF solo album number
Can't see that becoming a hit... played on the wrong shape of guitar for a start! Was introduced to CCR by a mate at school, many moons ago, and have loved them ever since. Always been in the top 5 of my "If I could have been in any band..." list.
I wouldn't have thought it was that far out. Top player, top grossing band. Back in the 90's people could buy a house off a major tour with a MAJOR act. Buy Porshces with cash... but those days seem to have gone.
Indeed. A guy I used to work with on many gigs, used to crew for many a major act - huge world tours, that kind of level. He was on the crew for a Metallica tour of South America, where all the crew were on a profit share from the merchandise. It was a pretty tinny percentage (something like 0.03 of 1%). He bought a brand new Porsche, in cash, off the back of that one tour...

The guitiarist in one of my old bands used to use the 'wrap it tightly round your elbow & tie a knot it in' technique on his cables - despite being shown multiple times the right way to do it. And yet, could never work out why he was having to buy new cables every 6 months, whilst I was happily using ones that were 10 and 15 years old...

Sorry! Now you know how I feel. It appears that they are like hens teeth to get hold of over here, and there's precious few of them in Japan either. If I had the resources to go and get one, I think I would have Limelight, or someone similar, put one together instead.

Fender Japan have a colour called Old Lake Placid Blue, which I just love. I have serious, serious GAS for one of these (but with a pearl plate on it): "]http://

Just wanted to put something up to say that in the midst of some terrible things happening in the world around us, I have recently had my faith in the basic goodness of humanity resorted by the good people of BC township. Take a bow Krispn for being kind enough to lend me his Lakland DD for a week so I could exorcise my long held GAS for one - sadly it didn't work, and I now long for one even more! Also step forward the most excellent and generous obbm for passing on to me a replacement scratch-plate free, gratis and for bugger all. Thanks guys - Two excellent people, part of an excellent community. Be proud of who you are, Basschat!

As McEnroe and Cash have already been mentioned, continuing the tennis theme, Bob & Mike Bryan have a band going as well.

Just had a brief trawl round 'tinternet and from the photos I could find, the bridge is wrong for a Deluxe, and the headstock transfer is all wrong too. Should have a s/n under the Fender logo, a "Made in ..." under the Percision Bass text and the "Lyte" graphic should be right under the g-string tuner, not round the corner. There's a Talkbass thread here >> http://www.talkbass.com/threads/fender-precision-bass-lyte-mij.1035387/ which has some good pics showing a Deluxe.
-
I noticed the different jack socket as well - round and recessed, rather than the oval shaped, face-plate type on the standard model. The bridge unit is substantially different from the one used on the standard Lyte, as well. So, a Deluxe, but with the wrong bridge pickup...
Earplugs! Get all of the cheap ones and compare, until you can afford fitted ones! Best bassgear I bought ever!
Single best piece of musical gear I ever purchased was a set of custom earplug. As a result my hearing is better than average for my age, despite 20+ years of playing in bands. Pretty much everyone else I've played with down the years is starting to show the effects of not using hearing protection. Other advice - If it stops being fun, stop doing it.

Howdy folks, I known that along with myself there are a few other residents of these parts who are fans of the old Precision Lyte from the Japanese branch of Fender. In a recent Ebay trawl, I can across the following: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-japan-PRECISION-BASS-made-in-Japan-MIJ-ZOOM-506-Electric-RefNo-42045-/171369337940?pt=Guitar&hash=item27e6689454 My initial thought was that £250 for a P-Lyte wasn't bad, and then I looked at it again and noticed the 5 control knobs. On any model I've seen previously there's only ever been 4. Anyone have any ideas what this set-up is about?

I occasionally do some tech work for Runrig, and Rory uses that same set-up - SVT CL and an 8x10. Every time I see, hear it and get to try it out, I think to myself "I've GOT to get me one of these!" as the sound is just wonderful. Then, every time I try and move it I think "Sod that for a game of soldiers!" Beauty and the Beast in one (in)convenient package.

For the covers band I used to be with, our regular slot at one of the local venues was 3 sets (2x 1-hour + 45min). Either all covers, or a mix of covers and ceilidh. Usually the audience would have had us playing longer, but the management insisted on a DJ set from midnight onwards. He was always too loud and played terrible stuff - every time he started he killed the vibe within minutes. In 9 months of doing that gig every week, I never once saw a single person on the dance floor after the DJ came on...

'kin 'ell! That's impressive work for 12 folk. I'd be petrified of being the guy with the camera and tripping over something and ruining that take!

This won't appeal to many here, but...

Very lovely. Reminds me that I really must go and dig out some of my Richard Durrant CDs. Thanks! -
It's funny, and maybe my ears aren't as discerning as others' - but I have always reckoned that a J neck pickup can do a very good approximation of a P bass.
I used to think the same way, and to an extent, would still agree with you. However, even though the P pickup isn't in exactly the right position, it is (to my ears, at least) noticeably more 'P' like than the neck J pickup running on it's own. Then again, maybe it's all psychosomatic - It looks like P, therefore is should sound like a P! And it was a fun wee project!

I went through a similar process a few years back. Had always used/preferred the feel of Jazz basses, but found I was increasingly hankering after a P-type sound (mostly as a result of listening to large doses of Stax & Motown!). Tried a few Precisions, loved the sound, but just didn't like the feel of the bass. Tried a few different pick-up types in my jazz, but just couldn't get the sound I was after. In the end I decided to resort to customisation and have ended up with a Bitsa monster - original body from my MIJ Jazz, but new bridge, plate (x2), electrics, pick-ups, neck & tuners! I also had the body re-routed to make space for P pick-up in the same slot as the neck J pup. Now I can have the bass set up as a P/J which does a pretty convincing P sound, or with less than 10 mins work and a small screwdriver, make it a straight jazz again. Tone-wise, it's a super flexible bass, that feels exactly how I want it to. Sorry, forgot to add - all in, it cost more than you say you are willing to spend, but a chunk of that was on parts you might not feel the need to upgrade (neck, tuners, electrics, bridge). The routing and new plate to accommodate the P pup weren't excessively bad. The whole process was done over a period of time, which allowed me to spread the cost and buy new parts/upgrades as and when I had the resources.

Does William Shatner count? Sorry.

Nice to see OLP getting a mention on this thread! Used to love them back in my student days... (daze) along with I Mother Earth. Had the pleasure of sharing a stage with these Canadians at the Kilkenny festival a few years back. Really great guitar player: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPdExLDpRzw

NBD - Limelight Jazz Bass 1960 YOB *Spitfire Guard!*
Simon. replied to discreet's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm not fan of relicing to that degree, but the work involved and attention to detail is brilliant. Looks like a real beaut, discreet. Enjoy! Has anyone worked out what pickups Limelight use, yet? They seem to sound pretty good. -
Which Current Fender Jazzes Have The 70s Reposition?
Simon. replied to cytania's topic in Bass Guitars
If I remember correctly the MIJ/CIJ 75 RI Jazz does not have 70s spacing, but MIA does.
Most of the Japanese 75 RI's don't have the 70's spacing, but a few do. Mine (as pictured to the left, and now sadly no longer mine) did. I've no idea if there was a set cirteria for which models had the different spacings. -
Really love the tone with the flats on and both pickups full on. Very sweet. Wish I was played enough these days to justify getting one of these!

EBS_freak - Thanks for a very comprehensive run down of the situation! I'm beginning to suspect 2 things have gone wrong here - 1. I've gone for the wrong product right form the outset, and 2. the seal isn't very good. The fit is comfortable, but I'm not noticing a great deal of reduction in ambient background noise with them in - and they are supposed to have 27dB of isolation. ACS have come back to me offering an upgrade to either the T2 or T1, but it's a lot of money, on top of what I've already spent.
