1. Leathergraft from Liverpool, they're in most music shops usually hanging near the Levys straps. The plain padded 3" ones are about £20 and are great... with Schaller straplocks of course!
2.
I stand corrected ! I still think you should go with the Ibanez, it's got more to it (in my eyes) than a Fender Precision.
Exactly! Bartolini pickups and a vari-mid EQ are *way* more interesting than a Precision pickup... And after getting into thru necks the bolt on ones just seem so clumsy somehow ;-)
3. Hmmm... didn't mean to upload twice... I *must* pay attention!
4. Just came across this snap of MM that I took in PMT Birminghan a while back... He was great; charming & funny & funky & I'll never be that good ;-(
5. Geddy talks about being 'funky' but although I rate him as a rock player, unless I'm missing something, he just ain't funky!
6. Is it actually worth boiling bass strings, or is that just be*llsh*t? Also, what would happen if you boiled Elixirs? ;-)
7. I just play acoustically, or through the Ashdown rig at pretty low volume... I thought about a practice amp, but it's just another bit of gear to trip over ;-)
8. I have an Ibanez SR1000EFM Prestige (4 string) and it's a beautiful looking, versatile and sweet bass. As to a lack of character... well, it doesn't sound like a Jazz or a Precision, is that the same thing? Of course not! It has its own sounds (versatile, see?) and it's built way better than many Fenders IMHO ;-) The string spacing on the 5 is 16.5mm, the 4 string is 19mm and a Broadneck Warwick is 20mm... Dunno if that's *too* close, just try... But it is a lovely bass... If you can find an SRX705 that's worth a look, they have 18mm spacing, and sound great!
9. OK, I've thought long and hard about why I'll always try to get stuff that's *not* made in China... My Ashdown ABM 1 x 15 combo is made in Essex, my Ashdown ABM 4 x 10 cab is made in China. The UK made item has much better vinyl covering, it's more neatly applied... er, that's it really. Most of the innards of the amps have been Chinese for ages anyway, just 'assembled' in Essex. A while ago I rang Guy at Ashdown about this whole 'switching production to China' thing... I was [Sidding Hiss]ed off that they'd 'defected' to China for the AMB stuff, he said 'what's the problem?' To which I didn't have much of an answer ;-) The ABM gear still *sounds* the same... The point is, where is it designed, by whom and most importantly, how does it sound? What *really* gets me with Ashdown is the way that the prices drop... I mean, what's it worth. The ABM 1 x 15 combo (575w) started at nearly a grand... I paid about £750, they're now around £600. Partly of course 'cos they're now made in China!!! You pays yer money...
10. Wish I could be there, looks like a lotta fun! Hmmm, I guess most of it'll end up on eBay...
11. Looks brilliant, gonna watch the rest later on - gotta go to work ;-(
12.
I had the washing machine. I reckon it was probably Ashdown's best cab. Quite tight for a 15" not too woolly, despite the absence of a horn.
I use a 1 x 15" (in a ABM C115 575w combo) and it sounds great! I agree about the lack of a horn... but I like that older sound ;-) Combined with a ABM 410 cab - you have it all for a great sound. Very solidly built, heavy, good drivers, what's to dislike?
13.
GAK have the ATK700 - but only because I asked them about it. I think thomann is your best bet.
I think that iMuso have them... www.imuso.co.uk ATK300 - £318 ATK305 - £349 I've played the 4 string, It was excellent, especially for the money!
14.
I remember that I was really interested in this bass but I couldn't find it anywhere to try it, just wondering if anyone has actually played on one. Will probably pass but I think I've been bit by the jazz bass bug.
That's one of several Fender basses that I'd like to play... But as you point out - where the hell are they? It'd be good to have a reasonable choice of models, Even a choice of several of the same model, Seeing as they are often very inconsistent. Personally I reckon we get treated pretty badly, Certainly compared to guitarists, who have a lot more stock to try out.
15.
Wow! Why didn't you put a bid on it and sell it on?
I'd have rather got it an' kept it ;-)
16. "A 1998/1999 Black Fender American P-Bass, in excellent condition, complete with a barely used Hiscox Liteflite bass case." From eBay a few hours ago, it went for £335 + £10 postage... Is that a good deal or what? I wish I'd got it...
17. Slap:- Firstly I have to say that I'm no good at it, also I don't really like the *sound* of most of it. I'd much rather listen to a bassist groove than slap. Funk is definately in the fingers for me. The other problem is that 8/10 guys think they *have* to do it, even if they're not really that good at it... And there's nothing worse than a crummy Flea impersonator, check any music shop on a Saturday. Does it go in and out of fashion? I guess so... Remember "just say no to slap"
18. That's beautiful! makes me sad I sold my '78...
19.
...is the way that the 'enlarge item' links are actually smaller than the original picture. Brilliant
Yeah, that got me grinning too... Shoot the web designer
20. Hi guys, I don't want to sound like an anorak (!) but is there an archive of old Fender catalogues online?
21. Hi there, is it 34" scale?
22.
Im pretty much decided that I'm gonna get one of these, I've heard nothing but praise for them and the one I tried was really nice. I just can't decide which colour I prefer between the Fiesta Red and White. I've only seen the red in real life, anyone know somewhere in Manchester or nearabouts where I can see the white version? Whichever one I get, Im gonna stick a black pickguard on it I hate the pearl on the red and not a massive fan of the tort on white. Im swaying towards red and black at the moment...the fact Im a United supporter may be the reason why lol. Gotta say I prefer the vintage white *with* the tort pickguard... Would love one myself but I reckon it'd spoil you for 34" basses. After all, a Mustang has gotta be easier to play ;-)
23. I feel the need for a really Fender sounding bass to compliment my Ibanez gear.... The trouble is I like the Precision sound *and* the Jazz sound. For Jazz I love the *growl* and for Precision I love the *deep clank* As to necks I really like the Jazz neck better... Budget would be no more than £600 or so new... I'm considering the Geddy Lee, the Reggie Hamilton, the Jazz 24, I have to say that I like Japan or Korea more than Mexico, but that's because of a bad experience with a really crummy MIM Jazz a while back. Of course, maybe the Fender sound is better from someone elses brand ;-) Any thoughts please...
24. Thanks for all the info. guys ;-) I'll order that Ibanez hardcase...
25. Apologies if this has been covered before, but what's the general experience with ordering stuff from Thomann in Germany?
