Really nice work, both the song and the video.

I had two Warwick 6 strings which both sounded fab. one fretless and one fretted. The fretless had the best sound of the two, it was a really great full bass sound (oh, I still miss the sound) but I found the body to be really uncomfortable and the necks on both were just horrible in terms of the neck profile, just too chunky. Both sounded great so I really wanted to love them but I couldn't I hope they're with someone who does love them.

Hmm, okay I couldn't watch/listen to the clip at work but I'd have to say that was pretty messy. Shame. Whilst I've never thought of MA as a Billy Sheehan I always felt he did what was need for VH during the DLR period (as I don't count the Hagar years), but I think he should stay well clear of soloing in anyway if that's his output
-
There are detractors of Michael Anthony and Alex Van Halen ?! I must have been living in a parallel universe, VH during the DLR/MA period were one fantastic tight outfit producing top notch music, while MA doesn't do Victor Wooten he does exactly what's needed for the tracks and some of it even grooves . I'm astounded that he has detractors for doing such a damn fine job ! I'm off back to my universe

Whats your "Dream Team" of musicians...
purpleblob replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Hmm let's think. Vocals: the great Robert Plant Guitars: they'd need to be brilliant to compete with Plant - Jimmy Page, nobody better Drums: somebody to really drive a tune and that would have to be John Bonham Bass: we need someone who can play ballsy as well as melodic, maybe do a little keyboards as well so I think John Paul Jones Now that's one hell of a line up -
One for all the pointy bass haters out there

I was very tempted by a Mockingbird way back in my youth and still love the shape, so that's me sorted -
Right ok. You don't need to hit the string really hard or to pull on it,in fact you'll get a better tone if you don't. Try to lighten your touch and turn the amp up to compensate. Just take it nice and steady and practise crossing strings using alternating fingers- two octave major scales are always good for that. Make sure you are doing it accurately and eventually you will notice that you will be able to up the tempo comfortably. Don't try to push it too soon. Speed will naturally develop over time.
What he said I'd definitely say practise scales whilst working on your technique, this way you kill (at least) two birds with one stone by bettering your technique and improving your knowledge of the fretboard.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I started playing bass due to Steve Harris (I started on bass in a hope to pick up girls, how wrong was I!) but Running Free was one of the first bass lines I learned to play, the guy is one of the few who plays catchy or just plain interesting bass lines in this genre of music. Funnily enough I lost some of the love for Maiden after the number of the beast, although I still went and bought all their albums as they were still better than most metal out there. I was a bit of a die hard Di'Anno fan so that may also have had something to do with it, but must admit the last three studio albums have been absolutely fantastic and long may Maiden continue producing such music.

Absolutely brilliant ! Totally agree with the previous comments - this guy played really well, the choices in the medley merged seemlessly and what an advert for Steve Harris's brilliance as a bassist and songwriter. Thanks for sharing - top notch. "we're blood brother's, we're blood brotherrrrrrrs" Sorry, couldn't help myself
I think it's fair to say there was some outstanding bass playing in quite a lot of 80s chart-botherers. What went wrong? J.
Totally agree, those were great times for bass.

Sorry if these have been shown as youtube clips or the likes (I cannot see youtube clips at work ) Pretty much anything by Go West. How's about, I'm gonna tear your playhouse down by Paul Young (there's a bit of a theme with these two ). Someone else mentioned Too Shy by Kajagoogoo, I always liked Duran Duran's Save a Prayer. I suppose you could say Level 42 did pop (or am I pushing it), so Hot Water (I don't think I'll get away with Mr Pink ). Oh wait, can I say Chic are pop, if so then ofcourse Le Freak and Good Times EDIT: Hmm just re-read the OP, maybe these were all bad choices as I don't think they "throwaway light confection" songs

Best fretless - Wal, game over end of discussion Okay, so I admit I have a Wal fretless on order, so I would say that wouldn't I .

I had a quick look on the bass gallery web site and for a refret (I know this isn't a refret but thought it might be close enough ) they reckon about £200 (see http://www.thebassgallery.com/workshop.cfm).
I just did a quick in my head add-up of all my musical gear - basses, guitars, amps, keyboards, studio equipment and stopped when I passed the figure I paid for my flat...
Brilliant, now I feel a lot better
-
I don't think I should play this game as I'll only upset myself and just in case my wife see's this thread and realises the real worth of my gear

Really didn't rate either the Chickenfoot or Them Crooked Vultures albums that much, but if the choice was solely between these two then Chickenfoot were far better than TCV (sorry JPJ I can't believe I'm voting against you).
Strange how the snob thing rubs off on people too. I once had someone approach me after a gig to tell me how much he enjoyed the band, but that really I should try to save and buy a Fender. I just smiled knowingly and disregarded everything he'd just said. I was playing my Wal Custom at the time. I've heard other folks have similar experiences.
Very sad news. My deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends.
I really enjoyed the whole thing, maybe I'm just a saddo bass nut though I thought it was really interesting to watch different players with massively different technique & core tone interpreting the same part.
I'm with you Molan I enjoyed that (and I admit to being a saddo bass nut) it was interesting listening to the different styles with their own takes on soloing over school days. I'm a big fan of Stanley and Marcus but I have to say I thought Flea was great and I really loved what Alex Al and particularily what Bunny Brunel played. And boy Wayman Tisdale's a giant of a man !

Fantastic playing and you get a really lovely sound out of that fretless.
