1. Whilst I'm here, how about Boy, this takes me back
2. I love the groove of this one by Victor Wooten I would have thought there'd have been more Marcus Miller (& Luther) in a funk and groove thread, so how's about or EDIT: And how could I forget
3. Was watching this a couple of weeks ago - Victor is an amazing musician. EDIT: I've been going through a Wooten appreciation period. Often people just see the bass pyrotechnics but the guys can really groove as well. Actually he can do it all.
4. If we take price out of the equation for a moment, I'd really love to try a Fodera sometime and see if it suited me. I doubt I could afford one if it did suite me, so on second thoughts, maybe I shouldn't try one out :-)
5. Wow, wow, wow - the fretless looks a beauty. I'm sure this one will be snapped up by somebody (I've recently spent my GAS money though, so not me )
6. He's a great player. I like his tone on his recordings, but find it a little thin on the youtube vids of him. His stairway to heaven interpretation is great.
7. I only ever improvise (or at least that's the name I give it, others say I just make mistakes all the time ). As others have said, scales, modes, chord theory etc. all help. They help your ears and your technique, but as I often pipe in on such threads listen to what you're plaing as well, take it slow and think about both the notes (where you are and when you want to get to) but don't forget the groove or rhytm of the music either. It's relatively easy to knock together a sequence on notes at some super fast speed, what's difficult is actually playing something good (I hope that doesn't sound too cras).
8.
I earned the money and owning, playing and performing with expensive bass gear makes me happy.
I've tried to keep out of this one but couldn't help myself in the end. Basically it's like 'Toasted' said. If you have the money and you're happy to spend £X,000 on an instrument you need not justify your purchase to anyone but yourself. Whether you're amateur, professional or whatever you class yourself as makes no difference. Whether you're the best or worst player makes no difference, it's you money, do with it what you will. Personally I wouldn't pay that much out for an instrument, but it's certainly not my place to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't spend their money on and if they're happy and enjoy owning such an instrument, good for them.
9.
For gods sake give it to your wife with strict instructions that if you ever suggest to her you want to sell it again, she's to slap some sense into you.
May I suggest an even more certain way to stop this happening again. Can I suggest that you give the bass to me (immediately!) and I will ofcourse look after it on your behalf ensuring that you do not get any further urges to sell it.
10.
Even was on the verge of donating a few quid as well. Yeah, I feel like a bit of a mug, and/or tool now
My 2p's worth to those who did donate or were about to. If this (as appears to be the consensus) is a scam, you should under no circumstance feel like mug's or the likes. The fact you were prepared to take somebody's word for, what sounded a terribly tragic story, says a lot about your good and generous natures and I for one commend you.
11. The 80's for me were a strange cross between pop, such as Simply Red, Wet Wet Wet and the brilliant Go West, the the slightly less pop (at times) of Level 42 and heavy metal, such as Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, UFO & MSG oh and how could I forget my fav. at the time Van Halen (there's only one VH and that's with DLR!). So let's start with the best Simply Red tune (other than holding back the years), Money's too tight to mention. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrUB0g8Vjgg then Wet Wet Wet's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U28qdnx3fiY we've already had some Go West, but (as they were the first band I noticed putting out special 12inch mixes) here's one of those... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Av9PxjufUVk Ofcourse there's Frankie ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyl5DlrsU90 (I still remember their original version on The Tube). Then onto the great man himself - Mark King in Level 42 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDcE4clM42Y Okay I've chosen a pop VH tune because it always makes me smile http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swzh0ngMNJo Then, not my fav. Maiden tune, but one which is very much of the 80's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geHLdg_VNww Motorhead was Overkill to me (although from what I see it was in fact released in 79) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geHLdg_VNww (nice recent version, but where's filthy Phil) here we go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOJvtulmEZI How's about Saxon's Wheels of Steel (first gig I went to was to watch Saxon, unbelievably loud) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McFGsKSJH80 and this vid has the Priest as well :-) MSG Lost Horizon's, one we used to cover in the heavy rock band I was in back then http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22RdpmXWWg8 There was also Howard Jones (very 80's) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE61Bz7IHKg and how's about Nik Kershaw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q711tY76_38 Then there's Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, King http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjWjTRG6uxQ, Paul Young (ofcourse with Pino!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTWt_pKiMl4 oh I could keep going for ages Ooo, I've come over all nostaligic now. EDIT: Sorry, I got a little carried away with this post
12. My, that's a lovely instrument. Unfortunately for me I've just spent my GAS fund on something else, but have a bump from me. Good luck with the sale.
13. Interesting discussion. For my 2p's worth I'd say the intrinsic tone of an instrument is still very important. Ultimately the closer your instrument is to producing the sound you want, then the more (I would hope) you can do with sound shaping using preamps, amp sims. effects etc. if you're into all that. But I'd certainly agree that it's not the most important reason to own one instrument over another. I'd prefer a bass that wasn't 100% perfect on the tonal/sound front (as long as it wasn't bad mind you!) that felt good to play over a bass that sounded better but was a dog to play.
14. Just tooks some pics (not great ones) of my couple of Warwicks First up we have a proline 6 string lined fretless ... and the nice 7 piece neck and then a 6 string fretted. You know what. I have no idea of the model. I assume it's a Streamer of some type but there's no indication of the model that I can see on the bass and I've never cared enough to find out the model before - I just play it But if you know the model please feel free to enlighten this ignorant person
15.
come check it out, I'm not far from you
Very tempting But I must try and get rid of some stuff before I buy anything else and wouldn't wish to waste your time until I can clear something out. I've one instrument I was going to get rid of. So I gave it a clean and plugged it in to make sure it worked and it sounded great. Now not sure I can get rid of it I don't know how you guys can get rid of instruments, I find it so difficult letting go, sad I know
16. I'm afraid I've never tried one - I'd very much love to try one and see how it compares to my Wal and Sei (mind you I'd love to try an Alembic Stanley Clarke and compare also ). EDIT: Actually maybe I'd be better off not trying either a Fodera or Alembic out - my bank account might not take the strain if I then felt the desperate need to have one
17. That is one lovely looking bass. Very sorely tempted as I'm on the lookout for a high end five string but I really think I need to look at getting rid of some other basses before buying any more. So I very much hope this is sold soon as it's so damn tempting Good luck with the sale.
18.
btw, how do you do that you tube link thing? help at a very patronising level appreciated!!!!!
I've just had a quick look at how others do this (as I didn't know how) you place the youtube vid name inside tags in this format. *youtube*mrav_MSMjNs*/youtube* replace the * with opening and closing square brackets. so you should see Or pless reply to this post and you've see how it works EDIT: Also found this on the subject http://www.paramedicweb.info/ipb/index.php...st-ipboard-231/ Basically you navigate your web browser to the yotube vid. you want to embed, then you grab the bit after the = sign from the address bar and enclose it with so for example I was looking at a Mark King vid on youtube, the url is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yioVmqlt2Fk, so we take the bit after the = which is yioVmqlt2Fk, now we create our message and place yioVmqlt2Fk between , thus
19.
Dont get me wrong i love L42 but sometimes im not sure of Mr Kings tone? im astounded by his technique though...really would love to see him do gospel or something different.... slap is so part of L42's sound, but i love it when he plays fingerstyle now and again.....just fabulous...
I know what you mean - I'm am still a big fan of Mark King and Level 42, but there's something about that deeper slap sound as per your clip and the likes of Marcus Miller that kicks you just nicely in the gut. Fantastic clip as well, thanks for sharing - enjoying it as I type this. EDIT: Now watching the Level 42 Heathrow clip - must admit the bass sounds pretty darn good there as well.
20. Damn it, I'm at work and the pics are blocked - I feel like I'm missing out on somethng nice. EDIT: I need a spellchecker !
21. I liked Simple Minds but that I cannot see, however wonderful these "twins" may be, how they can possibly be worth that sort of money. EDIT: Based upon current 2nd hand values for a Wal (say £3k top end, and ofcourse you can buy new for about £3.2k) this suggests the Simple Minds connection adds £4k+ to the price. Hmmmmmm. Oh well I suppose there are people that would find that connection worth paying for.
22. Okay, one more from me, when I heard Jonas Hellborg play Little Wing on a 4 string bass I was mesmerised, basically to my mind this guy opened the door to do anything on bass, for me at least (not sure how to embed a youtube vid. so here's the link) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh_Z1kt5iR4 I have the good fortune to see him live a couple of times at the end of the 80's/early 90's and he was truly spellbinding. Not to everyone's taste including me at times, but a truly innovative musician. If you don't like slap then please don't play the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-NSHWrHJlM and yes it's total bassturbation EDIT:Been trying to find something with Jonas playing fretless as he has so much feeling - often not see due to his slap pyrotechnics - but this is nice (more solo bass than a bass solo as was Little Wing ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYV-MS5WzJ0 EDIT AGAIN: Sorry just realised I went a little Jonas mad in this post, so in for a penny in for a pound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WelduVCB03g...feature=related
