Get a cheap bass or an expensive bass. It doesn't matter so long as it's the right bass for you.
Totally agree with this. I don't get why the price of the bass should matter or whether it's "flash" or not, what matters is do you enjoy playing it.

Oooo, that's lovely.

Commented on the other thread but what the hell. Sad news. I think Jet may well have been the first person I ever saw play bass guitar. RIP

The neck, the neck and the neck. Is it warped, bent double or whatever, do the notes ring clear all along it on all strings (obviously if not it could just be a setup issue or fret stoning required).

Unfortunately not read the article (as couldn't get access to it, so sorry if this is covered in the article) but any number of hours/time period seems pretty meaningless/arbitrary to me. Surely what really matters is that in those 10k hours you're actually doing something worth while. I mean better to do a third of those hours practising high value things than simply messing around for 10k hours.
I just get broken links when I try and view the articlew - running firefox 3.6.8
Yep, same problem here.

As has been mentioned, I suspect if you took a poll of a large number of "the public" they wouldn't know what the bass is, who the basist was in their fav. band (if one existed) and probably wouldn't care, so from that side of things the bass/bassist will only be cool if it's someone like Bootsy Collins who stands out from the norm. But its extremely gratifying to see more a more diverse bassists out there and bass being taken as a "serious" instrument, i.e. not the alternative to being the guitarist or solely for failed guitarists which seems to be the case in the old days.

Could bass beeeeeeee any cooler ?
...So I'm not sure why the pro-slappers appear to feel so backs-against-the-wall!
Hmm, I don't really see that the pro-slappers are demonstrating a "backs-against-the-wall" vibe. I just think that there are some people so closed minded to different styles of playing or different music that ultimately there's no point trying to reason with them. For example, Pete mentions the superb Marcus Miller, but that name alone usual starts a good 10 pages of argument. But just to balance things I also think it's extremely unfair suggesting that if somebody doesn't like a style it's because they can't play it - I like the style but I'm not that good at it, so conversely I suspect there are people who dislike it who must be better at it than me
If you listen to an example like Marcus Miller's 'Run For Cover' and try to imagine it played fingerstyle, the bassline would lose all its impact. There are many other examples, most notably a lot of Cameo songs.
I think you're wasting your breath (virtual or otherwise) on trying to convert the anti-slap brigade. Ultimately it's likely they don't like the type of music that features slap either and will probably argue forever that even though some like RHCP, their best songs are when Flea's not slapping.

CHEAT SHEETS!! Scales, modes, chords and arpeggios:
purpleblob replied to faiz0802's topic in Theory and Technique
Nice work ! I wrote out almost exactly the same stuff back in my late teens (a long, long time ago) on numerous rolodex cards. As a programmer/mathematically minded individual I also worked more with intervals than notes as I could plug the notes into a formula to get the notes in the scale. Often thought of putting everything on the web including an app. I wrote (although would need updating) which could display all this stuff, but never have time. Anyway keep up the good work - harmonizing the scales next ? -
Anything above the fifth fret.
Hmm, okay well that would definitely include me then and damn proud of it I am
Generally overused for 'w***ery' but when used in the right type of song, I have no problems.
Out of interest what's the tipping point between somebody simply playing bass and being deemed to be a fret w***er ?
I voted 'love it',because it's a legitimate bass technique, therefor I love it in the same respect that I love playing the bass using any other technique,or playing extended range instruments,or reading,or studying,or using effects,or playing upright.......and so on.
Well said. I was going to go for "I think its great if used tastefully to suit a song" originally but this reply is spot on. So I cannot change my vote but just assume I've pressed "I love it".

I've gone for "who gives a damn" as I've come to realise that at the end of the day almost every thread ends up in an argument whatever the subject EDIT: And I can almost guarantee that this thread will also now descend into another place to argue over this subject
The last SE bash was (thankfully) very slap free!
You're right, I was at the SE bass bash and there was very little slap bass being played whilst I was there, but certainly no shortage of (what I would class as) noise and distorted high volume bass every bit as bad as Mr Rotosound and his slap buddies appears to have been (imo). Note: this is not a dig at those guys who were at the SE bash making these sounds but more an attempt to point out that denegrating a style of play just because people were doing it as a trade show/bass bash or whatever, seems a little pointless. It's a technique nothing more and it's down to the musician to use it to enhance their tunes just like distorted bass sounds good in the right context or tapping or whatever. EDIT: spelling mistake (as usual)

The clips sound great - order placed

Basically I'd say, if you don't know them already then learn at least the major & minor diatonic scales and related modes. If you you don't know it already then learn harmony and chord construction and from this you'll learn arpeggios for the chords. Once you've got those sussed then it's a damn site easier knowing what you are playing and the possibilities of what may sound good when improvising. This said it doesn't mean what you play is good but it's a massive head start. Now you just need to play and be inspired (as bottome states)... I'd suggest either recording some basic chordal riffs to looper or recording device and start of by playing the relevent scale over the top. Try to listen closely to what you're playing and then see where the inspiration takes you. Then it's simply practise, play and listen.
I must say that it sounds a bit more mellow than the Wal.. it doesn't have that dark mid-tone that a Wal bass or certain jazz-basses have. The craftmanship is superb with attention to any detail.. The Wal is heavier and a bit more demanding but on the other hand it delivers a sound which is unique.. That's a thing the Adamovic lacks a bit : very fast, very easy to play but it doesn't have the unique colour of a Wal bass.. I made this short clip with a couple of sounds for some Dutch bass-players (sorry, it's Dutch spoken but you can recognize some sounds) Thanks for the feedback so far
Thanks so much for the reply, I will check out the clip when I get home. EDIT: Just checked this out - first off, I have to say - that's some absolutely fantastic playing and whilst I cannot understand Dutch I still gained a lot from the clip and you demonstrating the different sounds etc. All in all it does sound a fabulous instrument.
-
Very nice ! How's it compare to your Wal in terms of playability, tonally, craftsmanship etc. Sorry for the questions, but I've really got the hots for the Adamovic FBC after seeing two beauties for sale on BC (and I have a Wal as a reference point ) unfortunately typically I have no money available at the moment but maybe later in the year I'll see if I can source one, but must admit I'd love to try one first as they're not particularily cheap.

Wow, what a load of rubbish being spouted in this thread about slap playing
-
I haven't been to one of these types of events/shows for over twenty years and they were the same back then by the sound of it. I like slap, but what I hate is those guys busy trying to slap as fast a possible as it somehow it proves their manhood or something. This said I don't think they're much worse than those people who play ridiculously loud trying to drown everyone else out (and don't even get me started on horrible distorted bass noises ).
