1. You'll make some coin from restoration, but upgrades should be for personal use - to make your money back you'll need to break the item down or charge a premium, and sometimes that can be hard to sell to buyers.

I've had two come in on similar terms - an 1987 BC Rich ST bass from the States, bought for $50; Wizard pick-ups, Gotoh parts, and now a real thumper. Likewise my 1990s-ish Platinum ST; yet more Wizards in for my birthday, it's being stripped at the moment.

Both great players, both fun to work on; I'll be doing it again - and, indeed, am on the hunt!

  2. Traded with Deaver, for a lovely MTD Kingston Heir 5-string - which, blimey, is a relief on the back!

Thank you to all those who displayed interest.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Well, I'm a bit disappointed to be letting this go. I purchased this in May from the delightful Guzzibass, who you'll see featured below.

At the time I was a strapping, virile, adonis of a man. Sadly, now I have slipped disc and nerve pain which means I can't stand for too long, and certainly not with a bass around my neck. I'm told I'm going to be this way for some time, and it makes sense to look at my collection in light of that.

The back problem means this is too uncomfortable to play, and I'd like to let it go to a good home to support my search for something more featherweight - or, at the very least, to help pay my physio.

I'll post some updated shots and a video review this weekend, but for now I'll borrow Guzzi's originals:

^ Guzzi doing what he does best!

The bass is in good condition overall, with no significant wear or damage to body and neck. The pick-ups are stock split-P/J and lend themselves well to a good rock tone. The strings are new Ernie Ball slinkys.

Happy to take additional questions, or shots on request. I will say, from personal experience, that this is one of the most robust basses I've ever seen. It feels very substantial, and solid and certainly lives up to it's looks; and thankfully avoids the worst excesses of the neck-dive on the reverse models.

I'd prefer a pick-up, and am based in York. Shipping is an option, but be warned - I have a real bubblewrap fetish - and you will find yourself popping for weeks thereafter :)

I use Interparcel, who are suitably economic.

There's an option to ship with a padded Fender gig bag - we'll need a chat about what you think that might be worth in the deal.

Lords know what a trade would be. BC Rich, Charvel, Jackson, Kramer offerings will go to the front of the class. Pillows and heat packs will also be accepted; as would young ladies well versed in the arts of making spines better.

Please do shout - failing that, I'll post some updates over the weekend.

  3. The NT Warlock looks very tempting, I've only heard good things about it.

The Paolo-sig Warlock is patently not an identical replica of his own bass - it's an approximation, assumedly with some level of input from Paolo (I'll leave that level of input open to debate - they certainly did, however, build a bass to his exact spec); and it's affiordable, which is where BC Rich has been plying most of it's trade in recent times.

Thus you can afford to look pretty much like your idol, which - for most people - is enough; and I think it's a fair reflection of this site that we're certainly not 'most people'. I'm quite happy to endorse the OP, it's not good enough; but then, if it was, I wouldn't be expecting to pay £350 for it.

I can still heartily recommend the BC Rich custom shop - my Eagle, "Wonky" (the name has stuck, despite my original Ironbird sharing it!) being a fantastic example of the craft, even allowing for the unique placing of the logo! :)

  4. I looked at the pics and got all giddy.

But - one question, if I may - who are Probass?

In my bid to only own basses which are pointy and can only be played whilst wearing spandex, I'd never heard of them; good thoughts?

  5. I had a quick squint on the internets, and found the following:

No mega detail, but a screenshot which shows the pedal set-up - neatly labelled, so you now know what he uses live!

  6. Ah, hello old bass :)

Just to confirm, this is a lovely little player - as the shape would suggest, it's a great rock bass; and a snip at this price, considering the fitted bag would fetch a few quid on it's own.

Keith's a pleasure to do business with. The fretless that came my way was immaculate, so I'd say that you can do business in total confidence.

  7. Confidence comes from practice, Beyond; remember how nervous you likely were when chairing your first meeting? Making your first business presentation?

I know, for me, they're water off a duck's back. I've spoken to rooms of 300 people and not blinked. But I struggle in front of a room of 25 people in a pub?

It's just the practice. Play more; play more in front of people; enjoy it more :)

  8.
I recently had a go on a Squier bass, it said precision but it looked like a jazz neck and it had a jazz bridge pick up. A nice bass for (I think) £130 second hand but v good. I think they are £200 ish new. My only criticism was that it was too light!
Do you know which one you tried, Dom?

I'm definitely a fan of the Squiers.

I like the Star Bass, but it's a string shy of what I was after - that said, who'd notice with that on stage?

I've arranged to try and Ibby.

In the meantime, I am on painkillers.

  9. Budget c.£500, which I guess would also cover a strap!

GP confirmed me as a slipped disc. Apparently I've made a right mess, so I'm straight on physio and relegated to working from home.

The spasms are something f***ing else. I put a triple break in my right arm and still elbowed my way out of the remains of my car; one twinge of my spine and this former prop is winded with it.

  10. Chaps.

I done goof'ed up good, in short. My spine is now a tender and gentle flower, and will be so for some time. Having played rugby for some years, I gave myself all the time in the world for an injury; and have now done so doing something totally innocuous, in keeping with sod's law.

The downside, my band are now getting to the stage of, well, playing. I had elected to play the T-bird fiver I picked up from Guzzi, but it's heavy. Or is to my spine, now. Short of sitting on stage I'm considering replacements.

I'm throwing it open to the floor. I have some prefered brands - BC Rich (but I doubt I'll find an Innovator, so scratch) and Charvel, but would like some additional options.

Looking for either active or passive. Something rock or metal oriented, without being silly; and, critically, light.

    Any thoughts?

NB. I never thought back pain would be the source of such pain, but after a week of it - eeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
