  1. This no longer gets played, so I'm hoping someone will make it a nice home :)

Epiphone Thunderbird - 4-string reverse. Nice player, stock pick-ups and electronics. Dent on the headstock and some marking around the bridge where it's been adjusted. Currently fitted with new Ernie Ball Slinkys.

Comes with Ritter Thunderbird gigbag, which is nicely padded.

Looking for around [s]£150[/s] £125, but very much open to offers - as above, it's not being played, so if you've got an idea then shout!

Happy to post but those local (another Yorkie here) can bob-in and try. I'll even throw in a cuppa

  2. Gutted. Like so many, I felt I knew him simply through his posts. His closest should certainly see this thread, it's a fantastic memorial to a superb individual.

I'm going to pay my respects in what feels a fitting way. Tonight, when I dig out whichever bass I go, the first thing I play will be a nod in his direction - for any guy who could help so many it's only the smallest of tokens.

  3. No - but I'm only recently returned to playing, so I haven't had the years-upon-years required to develop some seriously nasty habits; like slap, for example

I think we're all snobbish, to a degree - I mean, having mastered the art to some degree, would we return, sans sentimentality, to the Encores and Staggs of our learning moments?

I don't think so; not without some emotional catch.

That said, the boutique snobbery bug has yet to bite. I'm not sure I'd want to pay £5k for a bass to play it in a pub; or round my mates; or in my games room. I certainly couldn't buy one and insist it was better than anything else; for one, I'm not sure that I'd overly know.

The only occasion I've come close was when I picked up Shaggy's BCR Eagle. Which might have qualified, if not for the stigma of the BC Rich brand - and thus my only chance for some out-and-out snobbery was taken from me

The substance over style comment resonates for me; and substance is objective, to a degree. I could never see myself playing some single-cut piece of Finland's finest forests; but I could see myself hitting my Platinum ST for a rock-out - such is the substance of my playing :)

  4. Sounds good.

But in the spirit of continuing BC dissension when agreement would have been the more sensible option, can it please have a pointy headstock and be available only in lurid colours?

  5. In an old case of being careful what you wish for, I hark back to my words in the stoner rock thread - "I've always wanted to play this kind of stuff."

Well, now I'm being indulged courtesy of an old friend; who, independently, had much the same idea. Thus, after a quick jam and a fearsome session down the local, we're going to get some bods together next week to have a more serious look at what we can do.

I've traded down a little since playing when I was younger. After I smashed my hand I didn't think I'd play much, so gone are most of the goodies. I've gone down to a Line 6 110 and my faithful Big Muff. Which worked well in my play room, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't break out the bank a little.

What would you chaps recommend? Is the Big Muff enough, when putting a decent bass behind it? Are there other options or effects which would complement for nailing that sludge sound?

I am, in short, very excited :)

  6. Awesome work on the bass - but ouch on the thumb!

I regularly used to play rugby with broken fingers and thumbs, but thankfully never needed the finesse.

I'm guessing the fracture is reasonably central - if so, strapping! Give yourself some support, but then you'll need to think about managing the swelling.

The one thing to watch will be the swelling of the tissue around the injury. Avoid aspirin-based painkillers as they'll contribute to the swelling. Swelling + strapping = no movement; no use. Try something like Tylenol, which was an old favourite - painkilling and swell reducing!

I'd probably say no to ice. It's effectively immediately but you'll need to apply just before going on stage and a frozen thumb is little more use. Use a hot compress in the hour before, and keep your thumb above your head.

There's a whole load of other sprays, etc, you might try - stuff like Arnica, etc - but I'm sure you'll cope :)

I've broken both thumbs twice; all fingers bar one; and all my toes. Getting used to this now

  7. I definitely think being a musician is the career for drunken debauchery. Getting pissed at an investment conference lacks that essential rock and role, no matter how much booze you soak into your pinstripes. Besides, who would read about it? As I was telling my mate, a BP engineer, it's no use having fun if you've just ruined the world; I'm not saying he personally did, he's just convenient to blame. And from Leicester. Possibly why neither of us will write books.

I did come away from the whole thing wishing Rob Palmer had locked me in his house. I'd still f***ing be there.

  8. Can I please be the second to crawl after Jez?

I met Rafa Benitez in rather pissed form and ended up putting him in a headlock (it was my stag do - we thought he was a waiter); thus I feel the next famous person I meet should have a bit more dignity.

    /Crawl.

  9. Are you talking about coated strings?

The stretch you talk about simply sounds like the effect of different brands of strings; different tensions/tunings; and playing position - i.e. if you pluck nearer the bridge the strings will feel that much tighter and so will the sound.

Some of that difference will then boil over to the brand of string; it's composition; etc.

  10. Lot of time for Guy - anyone that close to Robert Palmer was always going to get some serious kudos from myself, being a local lad and all!

Robert Palmer, interestingly, also a BC Rich player. I remember Mal Stitch posting some old shots of Rob visiting the woodshop to collect a handmade Bich.

I suspect half of us here are the hand-watching bass nerds he mentions in his book, mind :)
