  1. The SWR rig under that bass ended up as mine 😂
  2. Just been to mum and dads. Found the pic!
  3. I really enjoyed the guild and I’d definitely say it’s on a par with the more expensive Taylor
  4. For context, haha… love this guy. last time we played together was his wedding. That was 4 years ago.
  5. I suppose my point of this thread was - do you still have your first bass? I hope it inspires him to “start again” - he really was a stunning guitarist, full of musicality - not a big soloist, but was a great textural player. Always had great timing and feel.
  6. My mate Rick owns it. It’s a brilliant little shop - he’s quite acoustic heavy, stock wise…but has the odd used Gem in. He’s also better on string prices than a lot of places. I try to order/buy bits from him regularly - he’s got about 10/15 basses in - and occasionally some nice used bass gear.
  7. So, in a few days my big brother turns 40. We played in bands together for years, and him having guitars in the house was my gateway to playing bass. Recently he’s expressed frustration that he’s not playing as much anymore and wants to get back into playing. When we were kids, I had an old yamaha bb300 and he got a matsumoku Westone Spectrum ST. Spoiled really - both of us playing really decent quality beginner instruments. In an ill-advised (probably cider fuelled) bout of “I want to be Kurt Cobain” he started sanding paint off and cutting bits off the westone. Eventally, the bits all ended up in a skip as he absolutely destroyed it. That was about 1998. I came across this at a lovely little shop (Marvel Guitars in Timperley, Altrincham) And away we go…
  8. I recently went through this with my MK500 and a pitchblack pro. the effects send will work. the tuner out is on the front of the amp, and there’s a second input on the front of the tuner. i was nervous of pulling the patch lead out from the front panel. so I bought a “flat” rockboard (Warwick) cable - and went from front panel under amp and into rear input on tuner. Its worth noting that when I mute the Ashdown - the signal still makes it to the tuner, whereas with the effect out - if I mute the amp, the signal does not. ahope that helps.
  9. I started with a Yamaha BB there will always be something about them I love. Never let me down.
  10. £225 collected as a bass on its own £250 with Gibson padded case shipping extra. Could do with it gone, anything less and I’m keeping it
  11. Some people like flash stuff, some don’t… end of thread? well, I always look at the band and they say “bass solo?” And I oblige - and it’s crap, first time round - but I refine it and make it a thing… as I said earlier, I sometimes follow vocal melody, I approach everything as it suits. some people really buzz off making the foundation, some people like to show off - some like to add a counterpoint to a song. the guitarist and I have to make all the noise, so I do what I can. I dunno - the best thing about music is that there’s effectively no “right” or “wrong”. Just don’t listen, if you don’t want to. I steal ideas every time I see a solo bass player. im sure I signed off the same earlier in the thread - each to their own. but - on the subject of Richard Bona - this was an awakening for me. Jools Holland…
  12. Oh crumbs…may have plopped my pants. That’s ace looking
  13. I’ve got one. Does what I want. Erm. Pleasant sound, warm, not super hard. Happy with it.
  14. A friend…ahem, May have happened across a Fender Aerodyne Jazz bass… Has anyone among these pages had much experience with them - it’s been years (about eight…) since I’ve played one - And a lot of my prior experience was filing nuts and setting them up in BEAD tunings for lads who’d splashed their student loans on them. How are the stock pickups… This mate of mine…they play funky stuff, rather than the rock/metal they seem to be used for. I know Fender did a Dimarzio (DMC) edition for the Japanese market. Just general musings for an evenings thinking…
  15. Good, I thought something fishy was going on…glad we’ve climbed over that obstacle…
  16. AAAAAAAAARRRGGHHH!!!! wow. Anyone want to pay the deposit on my new motor so I can spend what’s in the joint account on this instead?! JEEEZ. ooo. Change of pants needed.
  17. my approach “what’s a scale…”
  18. I don’t get the snobbery for or against bass solos. out of 12 songs, I reckon 5 of ours have “lead bass” parts. I sometimes follow the vocal melody, sometimes I go off on one - and smash a shed together…because, why not. our guitarist shoves solos in the others, there are songs where we both do it. i don’t really care for the sentiment that bass players have to just sit and hold down things, or plod along. In our band we all have a pop - it makes it different to other stuff. Anyhow, Kindergarten by Faith No More Please Do Not Go by Violent Femmes two examples of where the bass just does what the guitar would conventionally “solo”. Some guy on a stage leathering out slap bass solos without accompaniment gets a bit dull…but more power to them if they get paid to do it. each to their own.
