    I put chromes on my Mex P-Bass ( usa pickup ) 12 months ago and they still sound brighter than I would expect. They will stay on as this bass has become my Blues / Reggae bass.

    Fender American Special Jazz Bass Body Loaded, only mod is a Wilkinson Bridge. No chips or Dents just tiny scuff marks that are hardly noticeable. I bought this off a Basschatter for a project and I do not have the time.     Do a paper round , save your pennies and buy a decent compressor as it will have a very low noise floor. Do as much research as you can ( sample loads ) and use your ears. Check out the ovnilab site and maybe pm a few chaps on BC.
