I emailed Gear4music and they only get them in when you order one, so you can't try before you buy

I use my passive at rehearsal
-
Oh right. I'll do a bit of digging tonight on Google and see if I've been doing it wrong then.

I recently bought a Trace Elliot GP7SM 130 head and Marshall VBC412 off two members off here, but due to the fact I don't have a car at the moment I use the bass amp at the rehearsal studios with my new band. Before I continue I'd like to say that despite having never tried an Ashdown before the first rehearsal I'd always thought they were a bit poo. Don't ask why, 'cos I don't know. Though I think it has something to do with the bassist from System of a Down using one. Anyway, the sound guy pushes the combo (a 4x10/4x12. I've had a look on the website but it must be an old discontinued model) through the door and I'm slightly disappointed because of my aforementioned prejudice. So I hesitantly plug my bass into the 'high' input option (there is a low and high input, could someone please explain the difference?), have a quick fiddle with the tone knobs, setting them up to my preferred EQ settings (boost mids, high mids and treble. Set the bass at just after midnight). I was very impressed. I found the slider/knob EQ arrangement extremely easy to use. I also like the fact there is a 'grind' knob to dial in a bit of dirt. I like my bass to sound quite aggressive, with a boost on the mids and a bit on the treble. Sort of Geddy Lee, John Entwistle alike. Cut a long story short I've had a few more practices with it and dialled in my sound a bit more using the sliders and I really, really like it. If I ever need to upgrade from my Trace I'll look at an Ashdown straight away. And they're British! Can anyone explain to me what the sub-harmonic knob does? Sorry for the rant. I felt it was necessary with all the Ashdown haters on here.

Off the top of my head I can't think of anywhere else, since Sound Control in Leeds was demolished. Is there anywhere in Sheffield that might? EDIT: Give PMT in Leeds a ring. They'r Gibson and Epiphone stockists but their website is pretty poor. EDIT AGAIN: Gear4music in York have the five string listed on their website. www.gear4music.com

Want. The natural finish one looks really nice. I'd also like to know where I can find a stockist in Yorkshire.

Well I've just joined a band who have been together 6 months and have about 12 songs. So it's all up to me to write the bass parts I like to write my own bass parts anyway, generally. But I'm open to suggestions from other members of the band. One of our guitarists writes the music and lyrics. Records it on CD then gives us a lyric sheet with the chords for me and the lead guitarist to sort out our parts.
Is that how you usually have your EQ set. just wondered how it sounded like that.
Well I've only just got the Trace so I'm still fiddling with the EQ. Next month it'll probably be different. I like a lot of mids to my sounds. A bit John Entwistle/Geddy Lee. It cuts through the mix better and I don't sound like every other bassist. I also use an Ashdown Overdrive pedal. I normally set the overdrive quite low, but again it helps it cut through and it sounds more aggressive and raw. Which is how I like it. Like I say, I'm still just fiddling and I'm not entirely happy with it. I can try and record some sound clips for you if you like?

Fender Jazz '75 Reissue Trace Elliot GP7SM 130 (Thanks Mumbles87) Marshall VBC412 (Thanks ThumperBob)
-
I think the most reason most people think Marshall are crap with bass amps is because they're more well known for guitar amps. I think a lot of it is gear snobbery as well. They don't want the same as all the guitarists out there, they want everyone to know they're the bass player. I just purchased a VBC412 Cab off Thumperbob on here and it's great. Speak to him about Marshall bass stuff.
I'd always go for a Precision & reading what you've posted, that is still the case. The Squier CV jazzes are nice though
Why would you always go for a precision? I'm curious

No
Does anybody have any experience of these amps. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks Rob
I've got a Fender Rumble 100. Had it for about three or four years now. For the money I'd say it's a decent amp. Produces nice lows as you'd expect from the 15" speaker and the highs it produces are good as well. Only downsidewould be the weight. I think it's made of lead and it only has a handle on the top. I've been meaning to put some castors on it. You looking to buy one?
I can't get this bass out of my system.
Woo. I have that bass. Just as good to look at as it is to play -
I've obviously got a lot to learn. Always tended to just listen to what sounds good with any given chord - probably need to do a bit more work!
Me too. I've got a bass theory book which I'm starting to go through to try and learn some scales and stuff. But other than that... If it sounds good then use it.
