But Macca has not been restricted to his Beatles works, he doesnt just exist in 1964 BUT his playing does., Geddy Lee was little more than poor on the first Rush album but he improved and expanded his ability and technique, I'm sure Wooten started as a novice too and not the pyrotechnical expert he is today. Everyone gets better with practice, Just because your back catalogue is average doesnt mean you have to stay average. Macca is still playing today, he has been playing bass for the last 40 odd years and therefore he CAN be compared to everyone else.
You can criticise Macca's bass playing, but it's a bit like criticising Beethoven's french horn playing.

Removing a poly finish from a neck but retaining the decal?
lanark replied to Soloshchenko's topic in Repairs and Technical
I have a similar situation with my Wunkay. I was thinking about repairing the nasty chip in the headstock which it came to me bearing. It would obviously need the front finish and decal removing in order to make the repair as invisible as possible. You can't buy replacement decals so I decided to make my own one in photoshop. Being the OCD perfectionist I am it took me 2 whole days to get it exactly right. I've found a guy who will print it for me including the gold so it's good to go.... I now just have to decide if it's worth removing the original finish on this uber rare beast or keeping it "roadworn".
Awwwwww - personally, as long as it's not affecting the sound or the way it plays, I'd keep all those bangs and dings that it's received over the years. -
Just shift the rear strap button up a bit and you get one of the few basses that never falls over. ...Although I fear this info may be wasted on someone who time and again leaves his bass unattended in the way that it usually falls over from.
That is such a cool idea.
Gosh! it must be you,Lanark, from Alistair Grey book, right?
Ha! It IS where the name comes from. Actually, I've met Alasdair Gray. He's not only bonkers, but a geniunely nice guy too. I edited a book about him for the British Library (involved commisioning Will Self and Jonathan Coe among others to write essays and he wrote his own life story and illustrations - we had the launch at Borders (RIP) in Glasgow.) Of course, that's all by the by.

One thing I've noticed about Jazz basses though, is that they have a tendancy to fall over because of their assymetrical bottom. Since I picked up my Squier CV Jazz I can't count the number of times I've put it on the stand at rehearsal, gone to make a cup of tea and heard it crash to the floor. One of these days it might actually get damaged.

I have an Affinity 25th Anniversary P-bass - it was my only bass up until last month when I bought the Squier CV Jazz. The Affinity was great - I think that had I the time or the money I'd get the wiring completely redone with a little more shielding but the neck, body, tuners and pups have all been fine. Only issues I've had has been a slight buzz from the wiring and having to replace the jack socket.
a coincidence perhaps?
Maybe it's because you're using jazz players to play pop songs. You'd probably get the same results if you asked pop musicians to play a jazz set.
Allegedly, wooten is far better than the guy from oasis/blink 182 or BUT Who earns more money? lets say per annum the man with the ability to play any style, perform unaccompanied and still sound great, conversent in all styles, solo upon request, play 16th notes with ease,, slap, tap, thump etc, etc, etc has solo albums that the majority of people have never heared of, plays for a group that the majority of people have never heared of, but is regarded among his peers as "the greatest" or A root note player, who has a good image, an endorsement, who plays around the world in a very succesfull band Who is financially better off?
Is this a sensible question?
The thing is The Stranglers, Clash and Jam made a lot of music I wouldn't consider punk. Everytime I hear someone say punk now days isn't as good as the old punk all I hear in my head is Uncle Albert saying "during the war"
Trouble is that, as I said earlier. In the UK, Punk wasn't as limited as just shouty thrashy guitar rock from angry boys, and whenever I hear people try to impoverish the term "punk" in this way a part of me dies inside. What you seem to define as punk just sounds to me like a poppier version of thrash metal. To define punk to such a tiny, unimaginative, limited box is to make me wish punk HAD died in 1979.

I don't know how The Watersons, Yo Yo Ma, Nouvelle Vague and The Beatles ever live with themselves for playing other peoples' music. Gotta say, the OP does come across as a bit of a twonk (probably unintentionally). My band plays about 75% covers, of classic salsa music from the 50s-70s. We write originals too, but the holier than thou attitude is a bit wearing. Do you include folk bands, symphony orchestras, opera companies, jazz bands, blues bands and church organists in the mix? If you want a band at your wedding do you get a load of indie kids in playing emo music or a group playing pop hits from the 60s-80s? Ok - you're in a moderately successful band playing their own music. Well good luck to you, I'm glad for you, but it's no reason to look down on people not living your life.

How on earth is that electro-acoustic?
I've managed to get a few recording programs working on here with windows XP 64 bit. What type of windows 7 is it? I think the professional/ultimate versions come with an XP emulator to run older programs on but you also might be able to download one for the home editions as well. This is my understanding of it anyway.
I think all versions of Windows 7 come with a Compatability Mode what allows pretty much any 32 bit, XP program to run. I've certainly never found a program that ran on XP that won't run on 7 (drivers are a different matter of course).

Whenever I've written tunes, I've always had the smartsarse reply that I need to prefigure the middle section earlier in the piece because it seems to come from nowhere, or to bring both sections together at the end. That's what I've always found most difficult. They're probably right, but my initial reaction is always to think: "do you know how f***in hard it was just to write what's there? It sounds fine to me!"

Teleporter accident, two basses melded into one. The horror..
All joking aside, yeah, that's not a bass but a Warr Guitar. Played like the Chapman Stick, by two handed tapping (random image off the web):
Top marks for ingenuity, but my lord, that looks ridiculous. -
Isn't this annoying? Every event with multiple bands I've been to (admittedly only two) the backline's been supplied by the organiser. Hired for the purpose, not cadged off one of the performers. And of course THAT's how all promoters should do it.
I can understand where you're coming from with reading treble & bass clef. Why did they have to move it a stave? Is that a C or an E? Also if you started learning on keys then your mind reads score like a keyboard instead of a fretboard (when I look at a fretboard I see black & White notes). My trouble starts with that 8via nonsense! How many lines up???
That's exactly why I find it frustrating - I know the note, I know where it is on a keyboard, but it takes a second or two to figure out where it is on the fretboard. It'll come, but it takes a while.
Can i just give a big shout for Si Nixon from Leeds who was playing trumpet with John Legend on the same show - nice one Si!!
Awww - from the Ariya Arkestra? Cool - their percussionist / sax player, Pete Williams, sometimes fills in for us on congas or bongos. He's a nice guy and I love their afrobeat version of Crosstown Traffic.
Ah yes, but it's got incredible intonation. I wonder if he knows what intonation means.
Is his strap stuck on with gaffer tape or am I seeing things? (I notice there's no picture of that end, apart from the huge hole where the strap nut's come out!) But at least we know which other bands have recorded at the studio he's used.

Can you get to a shop to try them out? You don't need to buy them from that particular shop. I've been nothing but happy with my CV Jazz - love it to bits.
I'm assuming you can't take it back, so: 1. It's a Fender 2. Take the pick guard off and see what the problem is. 3. It's a Fender. 4. It's a Fender. 5. It's a Fender. Number 2 I'd get checked out but the rest?!! If all my "problems" were as inconsequential as these!
If I had those problems on a Squier it would be reason enough to send it back, never mind its more expensive, illustrious parent. Just shows that the name is no guarantee that you're not going to get a friday afternoon lemon.

Covers, but we're adding more originals (at the mo, roughly 75/25). The salsa dancers like to be able to name the odd tune. We're gradually increasing the number of originals though and rotating the covers too as we get more and more repertoire and the band slowly writes more material of our own.
