Yep, when punk started, there were many bands around, but predominently: The Sex Pistols The Clash The Damned The Buzzcocks The Stranglers The Jam Followed swiftly by: Sham 69 The Undertones Stiff Little Fingers Now in my opinion, none of those bands sound similar to each other at all, yet they all had amazing energy in their music, which to me was the way to view them as a punk band. The next generation of punk bands, such as GBH, The Exploited etc to my mind just went further with both speed of music, and the image, presenting a much "harder" style - not hard as in tough, hard as in visually and musically. Only downside is, punk is now as established and mainstream as many other styles. But thats what happens when something so good comes along - many people embrace it, because its so good. It then becomes mainstream purely because many have taken to it.
But in 77-79, Punk also embraced under its umbrella such disparate acts as Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Slits, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Cure, Public Image Ltd, Talking Heads, Spizzenergi, Bow Wow Wow, The Fall, Gang of Four, The Mekons, Cabaret Voltaire and Swell Maps ... even Gong. I think that "Punk" is much smaller and meaner now that it essentially means fast, shouty guitar-based rock rather than an approach to life. And certainly when people of my generation and older talk about Punk or Indie, they're not referring to a musical style or sound, but an attitude that could embrace musical styles as standard as a four-piece rock group to string quartets, brass bands and burundi drummers.
Since when has Indie Been fast or fun? have you heard Radiohead? or The Verve? I nearly slit my wrists thinking about them. I should have added with an edge, Indie always sounds by-numbers to me.
See - what's happened is that apparently "Punk" is now a definition of a rigid music sound rather than an attitude, which it was when it first arrived. Personanlly I always preferred what became known as "New Wave" than what now classes as "Punk" which is essentially pretty dull and mostly sounds the same. Greatest Punk bands? The Fall and Frank Zappa - just playing a guitar very fast and shouting doesn't necessarily make you punk. I find it frustrating that the same think has apparently happened to the term "Indie" too. Back in the day it covered everything npon-commercial, from the DKs to The Cocteau Twins, now both Punk and Indie apparently mean Green Day and The Killers. Boring both.

1960s Gretsch Country Gentleman
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1960s-Gretsch-Countr...=item43a22d93c6 I always like to see interesting things come up near me. Such that if I actually could buy it, I could go have a look. (If the seller agrees). But, there's no way I can justify spending over £1000 for a bass. Still nice to see it come up though. Pity about the generic photo.
Yeah - a starting price of £1000 and they can't even be arsed to put up a photo of the actual instrument? Do I smell fish? -
Just out of interest - why on earth were there no bids for this at £50?

Online sight reading practice (for learners)
lanark replied to lanark's topic in Theory and Technique
Our own major-minor has generously produced the very thing you need. You'll find it here on the site: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=74284. You won't find anything of this quality anywhere else.
Wow - I hadn't seen the introduction to Sight Reading sections of this. Bookmarked and ready to get stuck into as soon as I get home. Thanks for the heads up Stevie, and even more thanks to Major-Minor for putting it all together. -
I found this site: http://www.cyberfretbass.com/reading/index.php Which is very useful. BUt it stops before you start getting on to accidentals - and the exercises often aren't at all musical, just random notes. Does anyone know of any online resource (preferably free) for me to practice my sight reading? I know my way round a score (I learned up to grade 5 piano) I just need to practice connecting knowing the notes to getting comfortable with their position on the fretboard. Any pointers gratefully received.
But just got 6 of the long reach 90o ones off amazon for upstairs in the spare room. Okay they don't have the grab but with a little tilt on them when drilling the holes I can't see them falling without external influence. Haven't got them up yet but they seem sturdy enough. Looks more like the screws and the rawl plugs would be the weak link rather than the hanger its self.
I don't quite understand how those long arm ones work., It says that they hold onto them from the side - and the hook appears to be at an unusual angle. Does it hold the neck below the headstock as usual or do they cradle it somewhere less common?

We've always started with an original called "Con Rumbo". Although we've considered changing simply because our regular audience will stop hearing it soon.
Big +1 for the Hercules bass hangers. I have ten on the wall at the moment, and not lost a bass yet.
The VMJ (the natural one) is a really good bass that I have gigged quite a lot. I have never had a CV so can`t say if one is better than the other but I have never had any problems with mine. Having said that, it appears that they are subject to the usual Fender quality control issues. Some are great and some are sh*t! Although, that is more than likley true of most volume manufacturers. I have upgraded mine with a Gotoh bridge, Wilkinson vintage tuners, Fender logo, black Jazz plastic knobs and dodgy Halfords paint job. If you get a good one, it will do the biz for you. Jez
Well NOW I just want to see that paint job

From first look it would appear that a two-fingered wall hanger is the same as any other, but I'm happy to be convinced that a £3.50 is significantly worse than a £15 one. Any recommendations? I need to get the guitars off the ground so the cats don't knock them over and I hate keeping them in their bags and cases as I never play them.

Some tunes we recored on the cheap at York Uni
lanark replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Recording
Sorry man but we recorded with a guy who's moving to London in the next couple of weeks.
No problem. Loved the tracks, by the way. Especially liked the first two Restless and Trends. I thought the changes of pace in Resltess worked really well, and the horns in Trends worked great together (I hope I'm remembering the song names correctly). All in all, great work. ETA: I did type great a lot in that paragraph, didn't I., Great. -
Feedback welcome, they're on our MySpace page at the moment: http://www.myspace.com/copaseticska We tracked all four tunes in a day so they are rough around the edges, and they were recorded about a month after we'd started rehearsing them, so they have become more sophisticated live since then.
Where and who did you go through to record these (and - if I can be cheeky - how much?). We're at the stage where we're considering recording so we need ideas for where we can go to best most bang for our buck (our main problem is finding a sound engineer who understands the Fania sound we're looking for). So the more info about local studios we can get the better I think. -
Nice - a cha cha by the sounds of it on the You Tube vids I could find. Playing in a salsa band, the 4 is where I live rather than the downbeat (bass tumbao being basically 1 - 2.5 - 4), but I tend to keep it all simple .... being not very good. I'll take a look at the transcription when I get chance to print it off.
I thought it was going to be an automatic tightener. It looks to me like all it does is hold the socket still, which is a bit sh*t. My main problem when tightening them is not keeping the socket still, but actually turning the nut. Perhaps there's a simple tool you can get, but none of my spanners fit into the recesses of jack sockets.
True - if they're going to the trouble of making the expandable inner peg to hold the socket still, all it needs is a rotating outer socket that fits a standard nut.
Yeah, that was absolute bollocks... and he is a famous artist with pedigree??? My arse.
I thought they were the best thing on the show, closely followed by the Scissor Sisters. Rumur had a lovely voice - very reminiscent of KAren Carpenter, Brandon Flowers was very dull indeed, although the first track wasn't too bad.

Do the basslines/players on these tunes have flats on?
lanark replied to NJE's topic in General Discussion
Maybe you should chat with Drewie. He plays soul and disco and funk on flats Didario Chromes I think... Paging Drewie!
If you're wanting to hear the difference between flats and rounds, I wouldn't recommend Chromes as the ones to buy. As has been said, they take a fair amount of wearing in before you lose the clankiness. New on, they sound more like old roundwounds than flatwounds. I'd go for something like Pyramid Golds or Labella Deeps. Take a look in teh thread "thinking of giving flats a try" for tons of advice about flats. -
I can't help feeling that this really shouldn't need a specialised tool to do - but having broken the wiring in a guitar trying to tighten a socket, I know how easy it is to do it. Can't you just hold onto the thread with a pair of pliers while tightning the nut? Maybe put a dab of tippex or wipe-off ink to make sure you know if the socket starts to rotate?
-
Pyramid Golds can sound dead straight out of the packet.
Cool - the extra cost might well be worth it. Are their black tape ones good for that too?
The tone knob is your friend...
Yeah, but only so far (and I get DId straight into the PA when gigging - so I can't tune it out with the amp). Besides - you don't get flats to use the tone knob to reduce the brightness (unless you have a fretless, I suppose).
