HELP!! Tascam Bass Trainer MP-BT1: Error messages, locked up
lanark replied to lanark's topic in Repairs and Technical
I'd only bought it off eBay last week. Do you think I should instead be looking to send it back to the guy I bought it off? Or would that be too cheeky? I'd only received it on Wednesday and it stopped working on Saturday. -

I've now got a reply from Tascam, as follows: **************************************** Thank you for contacting Tascam U.K You either have a fault with the Internal SD card or a fault on the DP card. Please return the unit to our Service department for further investigation . Kind Regards Jo Fialho Service Manager TEAC U.K. LTD. Building 6,19-20 The Courtyards .Croxley Green Business Park Hatters Lane. Watford Herts WD18 8TE ************************** Anyone had any dealings with Tascam who can give me any idea of a) how long they'll take and how much they'll charge? -
HELP!! Tascam Bass Trainer MP-BT1: Error messages, locked up
HOWEVER... It might be worth a go anyway, as you should then be able to reformat via the BT1 menu. If you do try a computer format, add two folders to the root called MUSIC and UTILITY You also need two system files... no idea if these will work, but here's mine: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8453031/mp-bt1.sys - This is the main System File. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8453031/mp-xt1.lst - This one is the Playlist File, so won't work (as you don't have the tunes on my playlist), but shouldn't affect matters. First off though, I'd hang fire for a couple of days & see if Tascam get back to you & what they say. Pete.
Thanks for the files, it's very kind of you. Am I right that the System file goes into the Utility folder? Never having had a hard drive iPod or similar, I'm not sure if formatting the drive will stop it working. Will it still have the software to make it work and boot up if I reformat the FAT disc? I'm definitely waiting until I hear from Tascam before I try anything drastic, but thanks an awful lot for your help. -
That's a very scary-sounding error message. Have you tried doing an on-board reformat (when it'll let you in)? Menu >> Setup >> Full Format *Might* do it. The manual implies that re-formatting the memory just re-loads the setup file, whereas a Full Format regenerates it as well as checking the memory for errors. It takes ages, so make sure it's fully charged up first. According to the list of error messages in the back of the manual, formatting the Tascam from a computer won't work - it needs to do it internally. Link to Manual if you need it. Pete.
Unfortunately I've not managed to get past the Error screens, for the last day. I'm seeing if running the battery down will do anything different now (don't see why, but you never know). I'm wondering if reformatting from a computer might at least prompt the unit itself to do an internal format. If I DID reformat from the PC would it destroy its functionality if I used the FAT format? I bought this off ebay so I don't even have a warrantly. -
My bass trainer is locked up. I've just been using it as normal, not dropped it or anything, but when I turned it on yesterday I got the pop up message (without doing anything other than turn it on) "Memory Error: Init Memory are you sure?". Pressing every button, the only option I have is to press Enter. When I do that, I get the message " System Err 50: Please PWR OFF". When turned off and on again, then same process happens. I've reset it using the hole in the rear of the unit, but no luck. Just once or twice, it's started to work, but upon next turning it on, the same error messages appear. I've even reloaded the firmware on the one or two occasions when it's started working and that's not helped either. I have the option of reformatting it as a hard drive from my PC, but I'm very scared that that would remove all the functionality and even if it worked, all I'd be left with would be a hard drive that no longer worked as a bass trainer. I've sent the Tascam Repair Centre a message, but as it's the weekend, I don't espect to hear back from them until about Wednesday, so in the meantime - does anyone have any bright ideas on how I woujld be able to fix this and avoid the 4 week wait to get it back from them (assuming that it's something they'd be able / willing to fix anyway). HELP!!!

You need an extra category for: "I can sight read fluently - but only for piano! On the fretboard I get lost." This is the situation I'm in. After playing piano for 20 years, I know that that's an F#, but it takes me a second or two to remember where that would be on the fretboard.
Cool - apparently he bought it on October 12 1959, just 11 days after my birthday. http://curtisnovak.com/vintage/JazzBass59/ Now, how do I get hold of it. . .
Wow - now THAT'S what a relic job should look like.

Line 6 Pod 2.0 - how best to make use of it. Advice?
lanark replied to lanark's topic in Accessories and Misc
In the end I took it back. It was nice ... and fun ... but not quite what I was looking for. -
Today I acquired a Line 6 Pod 2.0 (yeah, I know that I ought to have got the Bass version, but this was only £50 and the bass ones are tricky to get hold of). I mainly got it for practicing without plugging the amp in, but ideally I reckon that I'd get most benefit from it if I could also play along with mp3 tracks through it (or maybe by connecting it to a laptop). What's people's best advice on how to go about using this kidney bean? I didn't get the manual (although I downloaded the pdf from Line 6's website - I intended to print it off, until I saw how long it was!) I'm now wondering if I've made a mistake and ought to have saved a bit more and bought a Tascam Bass Trainer instead.

I'd be interested to see some reviews of the zoom h1 and h2 as well. I can't afford much more than £100 but I want to be able to record rehearsals and gigs and jot ideas down when I get them, and then transfer them to my laptop - obviously I want the best sound I can, but value is more important than CD master quality sound. What would people recommend as a simple stand alone mp3 recorder?
Loved early 2000AD, especially Slaine and Strontium Dog (I know, that was a bit of an import). Think my 200 issues or so went to a charity shop.....
My mum got rid of them all when clearing out my room - probably at least the first 50 issues or so. Harlem Heroes was my favourite of the early strips. Issue one gave away a free round frisbee and issue two, electronic implant stickers to stick on your arm and pretend you were MACH1. I still preferred Action though, with Hookjaw, Dredger and Death Game 1999 and Dragnet.
I love em. Rock solid, especially the one with the padded legs rather than the pull down rest.
Another vote for the hercules hanging stand. I always used the folding little one for my P-bass but the jazz woujld always fall off, so I had to change.
-
Thanks for the replies guys - I've ordered one of the Hercules autograbbing ones with folding legs that hang the bass. Should solve my problems. Of course it never falls off teh mini-stand at home, just at rehearsals and gigs - I guess it's the heavy buggers jumping up and down around it.l
-
I have a hercules folding stand that workde fine for my Precision, but now I play a Jazz, the asymetrical bottom means that it's very unstable. Can anyone recommend me a stand (preferably £25 or under) that will hold the Jazz securely but fold into a gig bag, maybe with a neck supprt.
The basement is a good room, I haven't seen any music on the ground floor so I couldn't comment on that. It's a nice little venue, and it's got the BBC building and Leeds College of Music and the WY Playhouse right on the doorstep so usually quite an arty clientele. The food is pretty good too.
Looking forward to it, if the weather doesn't scupper it. By the way, is your latest avatar the executive toy from Terry Gilliam's Brazil?
However, I think the jazz bass is past it now, espeically in it's stock Fender type format. There may be a few miles left in boutique jazz basses but they're outclassed by the innovaters and market leaders now (Fodera, Alembic, ACG, Status Graphite, Zon, Ken Smith, Kubicki etc etc).
Personally, like football, the bass guitar is a simple thing spoiled by people making it complicated. I disagree that either the P or the J are "past it". There's a reason why they're the most copied styles in bass guitars .... they just work. Both of them - they work in different ways, but each are perfect in their own way.
I agree with silddx on a few of his points. Although I expect a lot of parts come off a production line (bell plates, pickguards) and I'd expect that any piece to fit flush with another, never seems the case. For me anyway I have to be specific and say active jazz sound does it for me over P and passive J. Get that extra deep bass and high end.
Funnily enough my Squier CV Jazz has a perfect alignment between the scratchplate and bell plate. My only real problem with the jazz is the hum when playing with just one pickup. It puts me off soloing the neck pickup so I tend to play both together.

In case anyone needs a latin fix at the start of December: £8 entry. I've heard the sound in the club is excellent (but I've also heard that the floor is dreadful for dancing). Can't have everything, I suppose.
I didn't mind the first EC song. I watched the show on iplayer and pretty much fast forwarded through it all. Performances that stand out for me on Later.... Richard Bona doing a solo bass piece. Went and bought a Bona CD only to find it full of songs with very little bass content. Duffy singing Rockferry. Seasick Steve.
I remember hearing Joanna Newsom on Later ... for the first time and was completely blown away. I don't understand the "hate" for Later on here. It's the ONLY music programme on terrestrial TV and I think it does a great job at mixing well-knowns with unknowns and all genres of music. Personally, I'd drop the ... with Jools Holland, hook in Mark Radcliffe and Jo Whiley to go with Jools and put the show on all year round with each of the three hosting alternate months.

I guess my issue is that they're so damned expensive. For the price you could easily get a decent guitar (okay, maybe not a '62 Fender) that's got all those knocks and scratches and wear through actually being used. And - to be honest - I've only ever seen one that's actually looked "worn" as opposed to "distressed". So, hats off to Fender's marketing dept and each to their own.
Lol the audacity of putting a clear pickguard on it
Ha! My thought exactly - obviously wanted to show off the beautifully detailed wiring job he did. with a decent scratchplate and (obviously) proper pups, I bet you'll get a decent guitar out of that though.
Shame about Borders... when the girls went to the n-th shop looking at shoes and clothes, I could escape there for a while to check various books.
Not just the Glasgow branch, the entire UK chain went to the wall about this time last year.
Rubbish. Saying i loathe the Beatles (which i do and always have done) Is not the same as saying i don't acknowledge the effect they have had on late 20th century songwriting . For good or ill its obviously been huge, only a fool (or a troll) would try to say otherwise. I am 48 years old so i grew up hearing their twee tripe on the radio day in day out. I'm sure i have heard as many if not more songs by them over the years as most people here. I dislike both their songs and singing, and that damn "Whoooooo' of McCartney's pursed lips like he's just sat on a boiling kettle and the steam is singing through his cakehole. As a positive influence id say both Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones were a more positive force in modern music. But hey who cares what i think, its just an opinion. But saying i am stating it here just to be controversial is insulting. How on earth is anyone else here expected to know what i do or don't like. Am i suspected of being a closet Beatles fan now?
Presley yes, Stones no.
