Update. Rehearsal room booked for Monday and Tuesday, 6 guitarists lined up, oh wait, sorry that was before the weekend now there's only 4. I quote "Hi Les..Well after learning your songs & getting the sounds right & really looking forward to the prospect of playing in your band,I'm sorry to say that due to something that has arisen yesterday i would not be able to commit myself to you're band so rather than mess you about i will not attend on Monday." In fairnes this guy drove 60 miles to watch us and was as keen as mustard, so you never know what's happened. "Hi les really sorry to do this but my wife's not as enthusiastic as me about playing again huge row so ill have to decline pal" I never saw that one coming, must add check with your missus that you can actually be in a band. The internet in Wigan has crashed cos' of me emailing stuff to so many wannabees and the band have put me on suicide watch cos' I'm so uptight with it all. This is my last band, I swear I'm going to treat myself to a peaceful retirement when it's over.

Yes, I believe that's the case. This has a floating trem on it as well so I'm sure they'll help.

Thanks for that. had to read the second bit about cutting them flush twice, that would be hilarious Thankfully these aren't that type.

Just picked up a Cort M700 guitar, it's really nice, I'm dead pleased with it but I want to change the strings. This thing has locking tuners WTF ? What is this devilry, is it a trick devised by our lesser brethren to make bass players lives miserable ? I'm kind of assuming I put the string through the post, pull it tight, clamp the wheel at the back of the tuner tight then tune up but I thought I'd better ask the font of all knowledge first. Les

Welcome to my world of pain. Would you like the list of the ones that applied for my band only to pull out after the auditions were organised ?
take his stratocaster and twat him with it...
Funnily enough my mental image of this guy had him playing a Strat. How odd.

I tried flats not long ago, did a bit of research on here and threw some money at the Thomastik ones, about 45 quid if I recall. They were very good but I eventually went back to rounds.

Personally I'd stay, not sure what the work situation is in your area Ziggy but if your a pub covers band 31 gigs would probably be pretty much the average for a weekend warrior band. You'll be in a better position to find another band just by being in the loop, if you know what I mean. And your still doing more gigs than the other band (the 3 piece). The guitarist is certainly entitled to an opinion but I don't like the statement that ends " so I don't promote the band", don't understand why he's still there if that's the way he feels. He may have a valid point or 2 about what your playing, I have no idea, I've never seen you, or he may just be pi$$ed off cos' his mate the old bass player isn't there anymore. Well he just needs to deal with that. The other option is everyone in your band start promoting, if you get enough gigs in the diary then the other band will just die cos' there will be no space left for them to play. Just a thought. Les edit for crap typing

I too feel your pain. If you don't get one can we have you guitarist please, cos' the guitards who have replied to my ad's are no better than your wannabee drummers.

Singer got a txt yesterday "Hi, seen your ad for lead guitar player, love your stuff, got the gear & the skills" singer txt him back and asked him to ring later cos' he was at work. Didn't ring, so I got the number and rang him, went to ansafone, didn't leave a message. 10 mins later I get a txt from him "Hi, who's this ?" me, it's Les the bass player blah blah blah him, Hi Les, can I ring you tomorrow, don't feel so good. Me, no worries mate speak to you tomorrow. I'm still sat here waiting. Now in fairness the guy could be really ill, but I'm not feeling very fair at the minute. On the plus side one of the lads who is coming to audition rang me today and we had a nice grown up conversation. So he's looking ok.

That beggars belief. At least I'm not suffering to that extent.
It is par for the course when looking for new band members. I think it boils down to people thinking they are better than they are. Then when it comes to the crunch, they get cold feet.
It must be. I could accept that a bit more if we were a young band in our 20's and getting people who have only played a few years and may be dipping their toe into bands but we're not. The retiring guitarist is 52 and the remaining members are 48,49 and 50, so we're not kids. The guys replying to the ad are our age or older and all (according to what they say) seem to have a track record. Surely at that age and experience you can look at a set list, watch a few videos and know to a fairly certain degree if you could pull it off or not ? Hadn't thought about Gumtree, as someone mentioned earlier. Is that a reasonable resource or am I opening up a whole new world of pain using something that isn't muso specific ?

Got to be honest, I think 15 songs is a ridiculous ask for an audition.
It's your apostrophe abuse that would put me off. But then again, I'm a pedantic tw@t.
Sorry, your quite right. Written with a touch of venom I'm afraid. But, I didn't write the ad's so they can't hold that against the band.

Our guitarist is leaving, no pressure, he'll stay till we replace him, but it's turning into a bit of a pain dealing with people who answer our ads. We've had about 8 or 9 respond, saying things like "love the stuff" "would love to try out for you" etc etc but when push comes to shove and I'm trying to sort an audition out for them I keep getting allsorts of excuses. A couple came to watch us last week and one was good enough to introduce himself but said he didn't think he could do do it, fair enough, that was honest and useful to us. The other sent an email saying he didn't think it was for him, again useful. Then I get things like, "thanks Les but I've found a band local and I'm joining them",I'm thinking, great, well done, good luck to you, but why did you put your advert back up the day after you told me you were sorted ? And various other lame things. Not bothered if you don't want to join the band but don't respond, you saw the youtube vids, you saw the setlist, you saw the giglist, WHY ? I've never really had this problem before cos' I've usually been in bands with mates etc and not had to do a lot of replacing. I have seen various post's on here lamenting the way folk mess about in this kind of scenario but it's all frustratingly new to me. In fairness, they weren't all like this and we have 2 poss 3 to audition next week. Excluding the 2 who came to watch us and the 2 who are auditioning it's still a 50% mess about.

You can always do what I do and use the simple one note kind of numbers to go over to the mixing desk and sort the sound. The desk will now be lighting up like the dashboard of the Millenium Falcon, cos' all the guitards and the drummer lied to you when you asked them for a level to set their channels.

Who are the most reliable large online bass dealers ??
Les replied to hamfist's topic in General Discussion
Never actually bought a bass online, but I tried so hard to buy my Takamine classical locally, then gave up on that and thought I'd settle for a U.K. company, no joy, so eventually, sadly, my money went to Germany. Can't fault Thomann's performance in this matter though. -
Generally a democracy, but we all have a veto. Saying that the drummer and I are generally willing to give anything a go,but, the singer and the guitarist both vetoed a suggestion each of mine without even a discussion. I vetoed out of hand their next 2 suggestions and really dug my heels in, the lesson wasn't lost and now, like Essential Tension's band, there is a discussion before it's vetoed.

Nailing the harmonies will make more difference to that song than what you end up playing.

I don't have "a sound". Is something wrong with me?
Les replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
Because I don't know what the knobs do.....
Both the bespoke Japanese nose flute combo and the bespoke Bagpipe combo I gig with regularly sound great with the knobs flat so I've no reason to believe a bass amp won't be voiced to sound ok without dicking about with the flat sound. -

Nope, your normal, I plug in and if it sounds something like a bass guitar then I'm done. -
A Stingray has one pickup, a volume knob, a bass knob and a treble knob. Anything else is a wannabee

What's different apart from the pickup ?
