Why do people say this? it's hardly the same thing.
I don't know, but I didn't respond cos' I was starting to feel a bit defensive about the whole post. I obviously have some moral issues that I'm trying to resolve that's all, and it doesn't look like I'm alone. I too, like previous posters have used youtube to learn stuff as well but I sort of lump that with downloads for that purpose, your still not buying the track. Or is it acceptable cos' it's streaming not downloading ?
-
Pete, I'm as lost as you, but I put a set of spiro weich's (bought second hand on here) on my Stagg EUB and I have to say they transformed it, both feel wise and sound wise. No idea about lengths. Not sure if this helps
loads of others are getting royally screwed by the illegal download market.
Totally agree, I just don't fancy spending 4 quid cos' the singer wants to have a go at Hysteria a semi tone down even though we've told him the problems with that. And yes I know I could take another bass detuned for that one song but then I'd have to download everything illegally to pay for my other bass.
-
Thank you all for your opinions. I wish I could feel black or white about this but I can't. There are going to be some scenario's that I'm not going to buy the song, but I can see me buying more than I do at the moment with regards to the band.
-
BigRedX , forgive me if I've read your post wrong but are you saying the PRS pay you some royalty or whatever if you perform a song of your own at a gig ? Or was the money you mention earning fee's from the venue ? Silddx, fair enough mate, It's other peoples opinions I'm after.
-
I can only once remember being asked to write out our set list out for the PRS, and that was in Anglesey many, many, years ago. Not sure if we could actually remember all the artists names.
Always buy music that I genuinely love, its a basic show of respect for an artist! If I'm learning a song, Youtube...simples SI
Pretty much where I'm at I suppose, just debating with my conscience if I should pay for the track that I'm learning.
I find this arrogant and outrageous.
well, in my outrageously arrogant way I suppose I'm actually asking the question cos' I do have qualms about it. I just never thought about it in the context of learning songs for the band, that's all. It actually didn't cross my mind till I saw the facebook post I refer to in my opening post. cos' I'm generally quite happy to buy music that I want.
If you're downloading songs to learn for a covers band, it could be argued that the performing rights royalties will give more back to the songwriters than they would have earned from a single download.
Pretty much where I was coming from, it's only the "learning a song that you would never buy" thing that I'm umming and arring about.
I think it was only recently they made it legal to rip music from a CD that was bought and paid for legally, and put it on an MP3 player.
I have to say, legal or not, I would have no moral dilemma about putting a CD that I'd bought onto my mp3 player.
-
so the consensus is buy it ? Have to agree. and we all know in our heart what the proper thing to do is, but, what if another member of the band has already bought it and emails it to you ? It's the equivalent, for those of us who've been playing a long time, of joining a band and getting a "tape" with the songs you had to learn. You couldn't get music for free then unless you tried to tape the charts on Sunday night with your finger on the pause button trying to anticipate the dj chirping in so someone had already bought it.
The idea that this question even needs to be asked on a musician's forum is staggering.
Well, I asked it , but I take your point. I don't think any of us would disagree that music should be paid for, it's just the scenario I mention in my first that's got me questioning my ethics.

Just been thinking about a photo our singer put on facebook saying roughly "Why will people pay £3.50 for a coffee that costs pennies is gone in a few minute etc. etc. but won't pay 99p for a song ?". Some of you may have seen it doing the rounds. I have no problem buying my music but I have to admit if I have to learn a cover song, for my band, that there is no way in the world I would want to buy it for my own listening pleasure I generally download it for nothing, learn it then forget about it, and it just sits on my laptop forever and never gets played again. What's everyone else's take on this ? Should I buy it ? Can't really make my mind up on this.
If I had a pre EB with missing mutes, and I wanted it to be fully functional, I would certainly consider buying the mute kit which McNach is referring to, which is an EBMM part.
Thanks DocT but there's nothing EBMM going on my pre EB, I have everything but the foam anyway, spring plates, screws etc. Searching now for the right mousemat to lay down it's life for the cause.

think the police might be owed some royalties on this one
Les replied to Chrismanbass's topic in General Discussion
Know what you mean. It's quite good too. -
Mousemat is the commonly used replacement
Really I'm getting my scissors out right now. Glued on then ?
-
No, the only time I play it between gigs is when I'm learning something or we're rehearsing. Play guitar almost every day though.
-
what's the foam bit like ? quite dense ? My 79 has all the mechanics but someone took the foam off, might try it, I assume the foam is just glued on ?
-
it's defo not pre EB

Mate of mine Sara, needs a new bass player, here's the ad We’re looking for a new Bass player to join us! Have a look at the set at www.gypsy-band.com. If you like the look of that read on…… On average we gig 3-4 times per month around the Warrington, Wigan, Liverpool and Manchester areas. We’re looking for a Bass player who is reliable, punctual and committed; has they’re own transport and who can possibly provide backing vocals. Professional attitude is a must. Ideally they wouldn’t be in another band/side project and view Gypsy as a priority. We aim to rehearse once a month where possible with the addition of occasional studio recording and video production. If you think you’re the right person for the gig or just want to know more email me This is a tidy little band, I've seen them, If I was available or I could juggle it with my existing commitments I'd jump at it. Les

Shall I sweep the floor with my a*se whilst I play bass?
Les replied to tonyclaret's topic in General Discussion
The problem then is the 50 squids - if it's booked a few weeks in advance, the chances are another much better paying gig would come in and they are back to square one and in a panic - so i kinda see their point, get someone not so good who will rehearse and not run away if a better paying gig comes along..
Sadly, you're probably right, and I'm sure it happens, but it kinda stinks to take a job then give backword cos' you've got a better payer. -
Fab looking thing, never had one but remember them. Do you mind me asking how much that cost ?
