1. I have a stainless steel scratch plate for my Stingray, I don't use it anymore but when I did there were no problems at all, if that helps.
  2. Recently had my old Mustang sorted by a luthier, fret dress, new nut and a set up. Decide to try a gig with it. But took the Stingray just in case. OMG. I've transformed from a finger playing Stingray man into a short scale plec playing yob ! Loving it. The sound really suits the bands style (foo fighters, killers, U2 covers etc). Thought it might lack depth but it doesn't, if I'm being hyper critical I think there's a little less clarity on the low notes but thats the only fault I can find. The short scale is amazingly easy to play as well. Anyway, to complete my transformation I've just got a Zoom B2 as well. There's nothing down for me.
  3. No, I wouldn't do it. +1 on the backdrop though
  4.
The key to being heard onstage is EQ.
I quite agree, thats why I di pre eq, I don't want anything I do to monitor myself to affect the sound through the PA. The op said everyone was di'd, so I assume everything was through the PA. if so, it's the sound guy. I'd shoot the bastard.

    harsh basses
and i'm not talking about boosting the high end, i'm talking about leaving the preamp flat !
how do you set a stingray flat ? Do the newer ones have a centre detente ?
  6. Cheers Pete. Never seen that before, quite good, ta. Les
  7. My 79 ray is 43mm at the nut.
  8. I have to say I do sympathise with the mods/admons who have to police fora but I really think deleting off topic is a mistake.
  9. If I didn't like the look of it, it's very unlikely I'd pick it up and try it, so I'd never know if it was any good. Does anyone really buy a bass that they don't like the looks of ? I think some of you have some butt ugly bass's but surely you, the butt ugly basss owners, like them ? (eermm....I mean the bass is butt ugly, not you). I'm pretty sure that last comment isn't quite how I meant it to sound.
  10. I could forgive it for having too many strings but it's also got about 8 controls too many for me I'm afraid.
  11.
Hey guys, all my equipment is brand new so no need to have it PAT tested.
So ? What are you going to do ?
  12.
So what's the answer apart from wearing thick welly boots?
Get a wireless system.

    TAB
I was on the Theory and Tech forum just now and someone had kindly tracked down some TAB for Maggie May for someone else.
That was actually me Marvin, who asked for the Maggie May tab. The fact that I couldn't find it is what prompted me to start this thread.

    TAB

I wish I'd titled this" TAB has robbed my ear", not "made me lazy", cos' that's what I really meant. I also think I was outraged that no one had bothered to work a song out, then tab it, then upload it for my convenience. You'd have to be in denial or just being a t*at and winding people up to say reading music isn't a good thing. Totally take the pro's view on it, can't imagine you surviving without it. I was more on about learning songs, not being able to roll up and read it, fasntastic though that must be. Anyway, it's horses for courses, I play in a pubrock band, standing on stage reading, music or tab, would be unnaceptable. I'm expected to know it. Many thanks to the readers on here who take the time and effort to try and convert us non readers, I do appreciate it and one day, hopefully, it may click for me.
  16. Thanks very much for the offer Mike, but I don't have access to a fax. I'm nearly there with it now, anyway. Cheers

    TAB
I'll try and scan an example later on for you to try. Rich.
Oh Rich, if your example was the bass line to Maggie May, that would be awsome
The one which I never understood in the tab vs reading debate is that it doesnt take into account the availability of sheet music - for classic rock stuff there just doesnt seem to be much of a market for sheet music ( for bass that is ) and so I have rely upon tab if I cant work it out by ear
That maybe answers my earlier question. I know the debate about tab will run untill the end of time but I really don't see any evil in it. It's a tool, and a really useful tool. OK, I'll admit it does seem to rob you of your ear a bit as I've found out, but surely that would be the same if you always used music ?

    TAB
I'll try and scan an example later on for you to try. Rich.
Thanks Rich, that would be cool. Something dead simple though, remember I have to stick my tongue out and wear a worried look when I'm staring at music. Not sure I agree with you and Simon on the generation of lazy players not learning to read. I'm from the pre tab era, pre bloody internet actually and I never learned, nor did most of the people I've played with. Not that I'm saying it's a good thing, just making a point. We didn't have tab, so we did it by ear. Also tab seems to be freely available to find and download on the net' , is music as readily available ?

    TAB
+1 on Doddy's comments - The biggest problem I find with tablature is the fact that there is no indication of fingering or positioning, so it just creates generation after generation of lazy-arsed players with bad technique and no reading ability. And it's usually my job to try and sort them out. *Sigh*
OTP hear what you're saying but tab does have fingering, albeit the "tabbers idea of where you should be". Does the bass score have fingering and position ? I can make my way slowly through notation but I've never seen(or, maybe noticed) it telling you where about you should be ? Have I missed something ? Tab will indicate 3rd fret D string for F or 8th fret A string for F (same note). Not seen it much on bass tab but classsical guitar tab very often has fingering written. Have I missed something ?

    TAB

I agree with you Doddy, unless you know the song it's not much use. Can also see why a pro like yourself has no time for it, but for us weekend warriors it's a useful tool. One of the big problems with TAB, and I'm not knocking anyone who kindly makes the effort and chucks it up, cos' I don't, is that a lot of it is wrong.
  21. Try headphones. That's what I ended up doing, can hear the bassline much better now so can actually pick it out. Thanks for trying mate.

    TAB

For the first time in ages I'm having to pick something out by ear, and I'm really struggling. Anyone else just google the tab these days without trying it by ear first ?
  23. Thanks Marvin, seen them. Can't find anything better myself. Didn't realise what a good bass line it is, just that it's not very prominent to pick out by ear.
  24. Anyone got a decent tab for this ? Or even the music at a push (I'll sit there with my tongue hanging out and a pensive look on my face) Thanks
  25. I suppose if you need to tune you need to tune. But you need to keep your audience however you do it. I've played guitar (badly) in a couple of outfits over the years and never really had that kind of problem. Only had cheapish guitars as well, begs the question is it bad set up or is it just comfort tuning ie, checking rather than fixing a real life problem ?
