1. Passive circuits have one major advantage over onboard preamps: dynamics! In order to achieve the same headroom with an eternal pre, apparently you'd need a 20-27volts circuit to allow for the same dynamics/headroom a real (not bypassed active pre) passive setup. This is one of the reasons, passive basses do sound "better" (or are "better in the mix") on records. The other being that the extreme low and high freq. often pushed/boosted by active onboard preamps are not required in a full band mix.
2.
I've always found that passive basses sound better & sit in the mix better than active ones when recording.
+ 1000!

6.
I like using the SKB case ( with my bass in a padded gig bag inside)......Yes the latches are the 'weak' point so I always gaffa tape over the recessed lock area/ padlock as well. The holes for the padlocks are too big for smaller padlocks which in turn allow a little movement of the latches that can result in them becoming unlatched. I discovered this the first ever time I used the SKB. I would have thought this was a bit obvious to the designers!
What bag are you using?

10.
I flew about with a bass a couple of years back and used an SKB bass safe checked in the hold. My experiences echoes that of twigman above. Great case, flew about because of the wheels and weight. Biggest issue was the latches as stated. It got to the stage where I started taping it up to hold it together, which worked until Chinese officials searched it and slung it on the conveyor as just the two halves and gigbag. Was not happy. When I got back I kicked off to SKB about the latches and had a replacement shipped out from the states. The Americans get the upgraded one with a wraparound strap. One massive plus for me with the bass safe was being able to ditch the "shell" at the hotel and get around town with a gigbag, made taxis and tubes a doddle.
What gig bags are you using with your Bass Safe?
11. Did anyone try the Vertigo or Sleeve by Mono?
12. Hi, I am sure this has been discussed somewhere here on basschat. Although I love my Sadowsky Portabag, it doesn't fit into my Bass Safe (http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/proddetail.php?f=&id=13&o=&offset=1&c=84&s=75) So I am looking for a smaller/thinner alternative. On the other hand I don't want to buy any thin/cheap bag only to be used with the Bass Safe. I need something that will keep my basses well padded when I am using the bass with bag on its own. The Mooradian does fit, but doesn't have a ot of add. storage space (I own the double bass bag) and seems overpriced in that regard? So my eye fell on the Vertigo bag/case. Does it fit?

14. I thought the 500 had an analog power amp w. switch supply and the 501 has the Class D power amp.

17. I have them on my 93' CIJ 62Reissue as well!. They are great
18. If you are worried about the value of the bass, I'd get a whole different passive harness and keep the original preamp wiring intact. This way you could easily wire it back to its original condition. This being said, I only play passive basses nowadays. Even a bass having a preamp sounds differently in passive bypass mode than when being strictly passive....
19. I got a Citronic 19" case from Jon. everything went ultra-smooth. Thanks!
20. I got a Solid Gold pedal from Steve. everything went ultra-smooth. Thanks!
21. I've been playing active basses for the most part: Sadowsky JJ and PJ, Sandberg PM, Trace Elliot, G&L L2500, Lakland w. J-Retro, MusicMan SR5, Spector w. EMG etc. But since I got my first passive P five string, I quit them all. There something in the dynamics of a pure passive bass that can't be replicated in a 9-18v on bord preamp. I talked to some preamp (on board and outboard) builders about this and there seems to be a consensus that you'd need MORE than 18 volts to get the same amount of headroom with an active pre. Anyway, my fave combination is either a Nordstrand VP5 or a Reverend Rumblefish 5L (both passive) throug a Basswitch by RMI/Lehle: all the headroom in my hands and very precise tone control at my feet.
22. Sold my Boss OC-2 to Rory. Everything went smoothly Thanks a lot!
