1. Nice, informative write up/review.
2. Graeme, Hi. A great site - always handy for reference and you were always happy to help. I think the above idea has some legs - I am not IT savvy enough to move a web site but I know that once I got used to the format, the blog I run is straightforward. As a point of reference, it needs saving, as it is perhaps the most informative out there. Hope someone enthusiastic and clever enough can keep it going. Many thanks to you for setting it up and running it all this time. All the best. Cheers.
3. Another side to the story. . . I had it in my LH little finger. I put up with it for ages and then went to the doc. He explained what it was and what could be done and said that in some cases, it does go away. Most people I spoke to said no way it would but about 3 months later, it started to ease off and has now gone. I did have an operation on my hand (not related) around a year later and did wonder if it may come back. Five ish years later, it's still fine. Not sure if that has helped - you, in your case, may need surgery, Good luck.
4. Sorry, I don't know where it is but think you should have hung on to it! I have an almost Identical Jim Cairns neck on a Stingray shaped body, with two EMG pick-ups. The bass is great the veck is Luvvverleeee! Good luck in your search - hope you find it. Cheers.
5. Mmm, Rosewood board - bit rare over here. Blade pick-ups - bit more punch! As stated, the phase switches are easy to get hold of. Not a lot of people know this (said in the voice of Michael Caine) with the bridge pick-up selected on single coil 8 - 10 on the tone, the phase switch operates as a coil selector. At the In Phase position, it selects the coild near to the bridge - in the other position, it selects the coil nearest to the neck, which gives a really nice tone. So, for a few quid, I would put it back, if you bought it. Cheers.
6. I have Blazers and RB650, which is what I think you have - P and a J. I have always find both types of Ibanex pick-ups very powerful and defined, my current rehearsal favourite in an RB650 - but well balanced against each other. If you like the Creamery Jazz, why not get a Creamery P? I don't think a Fender would bring anything to the party. If it's in good nick and is an Ibanez P type pick up (adjustable poles) I'll take it off yer 'ands!! Cheers.
7.
Wichita Lineman on the radio when I was a kid - still one of my favourite songs. Saw him on Later a couple of years ago after he'd been diagnosed and he was still great.
Me too. Also saw him in the UK on his tour after he was diagnosed. Even then, made the hairs on my arms stand up. Brilliant! A true star and a true musician.
8.
I find it very difficult to get misty-eyed about instruments like this, because back in the 70s when I was just starting to learn the guitar, unless you had parents who were relatively well off and supportive of any rock music aspirations, this was all you could dream of affording. And even back then we knew they were sh*t. A class-mate scraped together enough pocket money and saturday job earnings to buy one. He spent weeks levelling the frets and adjusting the truss-rod, nut and bridge to get a bit more playability out of it, but all that fettling couldn't disguise the fact that it had a neck like half a baseball bat and the pickups sounded like crap unless you played it through a distortion pedal turned all the way up. It also went out of tune at the drop of a hat.
Oh. . . . How well I remember all that! Kay, Teisco etc - it's a wonder we all stuck at it!!
9. Oooo! That fetched a nice price! To be fair, it did look really nice - well cared for, worth a bit more than the more "used" fodder. They are not that heavy and balance fairly well - definately Different!!
10. Someone has just put me onto this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Ovation-Magnum-Bass-Guitar-/131743326570?hash=item1eac83a16a:g:9IgAAOSwxp9W2a7f Bit on the late side - only a couple of hours to go. Out of all my lot on the blog my Magnum is the most visited. . . . by a very long way!! Looks really nice. : )
11.
How do I get a pic up this site? Tried drag n drop but 'the message is too short' was the result!
If you upload it to somewhere like Photobucket or Flickr, you then click on the link the it will associate to it click on the "Image" symbol on the toolbar above, paste it and away you go. You end up with the images you want. This is my Ray Cooper. . . . . now let's see yours.
12.
Those are Kent Armstrong hand made pickups..as used by Manson and many others in the 80's (including Ken Smith) I had an Alligator 2x8" combo in the early 90's..in fact, I think someone still has it for sale on evilbay. Nice amp, but very heavy.
True, indeed and they are certainly great pick-ups. The identity was confirmed by the man, himself here: http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/bass-restoration-kent-armstrong.html More of the story and more pics on the next post, coming up soon. Cheers.
13. Ok, bit of a long shot. Some of you on here know that I am restoring a Reeve Headless Bass. This is the second Reeve I have, The other is a "Tribute" Twin Neck - Mr Lee! Having tried to find more about Reeve (tried several times on here) I have now cracked it, thanks to Val Reeve. A very interesting story about two guys in Bedfordshire, Ges & Mick - making quality Basses & Guitars, over 30 years ago. Anyway, back to the plot. . . . . There was a very limited edition of these: "Alligator" Bass, which was made for the Alligator Amplifier company, which made the Alligator Combo, which I have seen mentioned on here. Anyone Got one, seen one, played one, know of one??? There was a guitar version, as well. While I'm here, I'll ask again - anyone got a Reeve instrument, seen one, played one, know of one??? The story so far here: http://flatericbassa...blogspot.co.uk/ Cheers.
14. Let's have a pic then!
15. Ooooo! You don't see many of those. Nice addition to your Ibanez family.
16. Hi. Contact Ray directly - I found him very happy to talk (email) and he will be able to tell you "from the horses mouth" He is here: http://www.raycooperguitars.com/ This one is mine: http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/ray-cooper-custom-bass.html Cheers.
17.
Cool, would appreciate that. Interesting that yours is a Morris, if it is exactly the same bass. Morris was (and still is) house-brand of Moridaira, a manufacturer in its own right, so that might shed some doubt & confusion over the origin of these things! Speaking of doubt and confusion, do you have an "Azumi" branded bass or guitar in your armoury, Eric? If so, does it have a serial number of any sort? There's some discussion going on about whether these were Chushin or Yamaki builds, which seems to hinge on serials rather than sensible things like hardware details... J.
Drifting a little of the original thread but have a look here - this should help you. http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/seiwa-jazzman-bass.html and this as well, shows there are more than one!! http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/seiwa-jazzman-bass-take-2.html Cushin, I believe. What do you think?
18.
First one I've seen since the last one - and that was a while ago... However, I've seen these same through-neck basses (and the equivalent guitars) with various different names, and I think I know what they are. From what I can glean they're a variation on a Japanese-market thing called a Fernandes Custom Hand: http://www.fernandes...9/1978_vol1.pdf (page 28) It seems that Fernandes was built by Kawai at this point - this Yasuki appears to be the same thing as the FXB-I bass, with different (probably cheaper) hardware & electronics. Jon.
Jon, Hi. I've got one - branded as "Morris". Bought it on a whim, years ago - still got it and it plays nice and has "a big bottom" Deep, deep, thud - with clarity. Just one of those oddball things I acquired that turned out to be quite a find. I'll dig it out and get some shots.
19. Sounds like a real bargain, if it is not damaged/bashed up. I've got one, in white and it's really nice. Grover tuners!!! Paid a bit more than that!!!!!!!! Pick-ups not quite as sweet as the other Hondo I have but still very nice. http://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.co.uk/2010/10/hondo-professional.html They are different to the standard fodder. The quick way to spot is the cut in nut - not just planted at the end of the fingerboard. Go and get it. . . . you know you want to!!
20.
Beautiful ibanez in here Here my quartet : all 1979 Ibanez Roadster From left to right : 79' RS800 sunburst (passive), 79´ RS 920 natural (active), 79´ RS 900 Traditionnal Violin (active), 79´ RS 900 natural fretless (active). Somewhere between PB, Musicman Sabre and Stingray. Roadster addicted...
Hello mate - how you doin'? Very, Very, Very, Very nice. . . . in that order!! Lucky man. Cheers.
21.
Aside from the obvious about being in a band and doing gis with your mates, I can`t really put it into words why I actually enjoy playing the bass so much. I just love it. Whereas with guitar, although I can play it decently enough, I just don`t feel at home on it, with bass I just feel like I`m "me".
I'm another one that agrees with you. Although I do play guitar, bass has been in my head since I were a nipper! Can't explain it but where almost everyone hums the melody I was doing the bass! I feel at home with it.
22.
I think GAS was much less of a problem before t'internet arrived. Makes it all too easy now.
Too right!! Back in the day, you scoured local press, music papers (NME etc) guitar mags, almost all of the time, no pictures and if there were any, almost all in black and white. No mobole phones - it could take you several calls to catch the person in and then they would describe it as wonderful, so you would head out - 10, 20, 30, 40 miles, or more - get there, take one look and instinctively know it was a dog - go through the motions and then say "sorry, it's not for me" and drive all the way back. This painful process would be repeated several times until you had found what you were looking for. That was why music shops flourished - players just couldn't bear the grief of all that running around. Now. . . . . click on something, like the look - perhaps ask for more details using your "mobile phone" and pay for it with "PayPal", sit tight at home - a knock on the door next day and there it is. GAS was around back then but the single biggest cause of GAS these days, is t'inernet!!! It is SO easy to be tempted and SO easy to go through the process. Nurse. . . . my medication please!!
23.
Just taken delivery of this beauty. Black enough?
Oooooooooooooooooooooooo! What is that??
