http://youtu.be/bGqmoWH-t1c Check out the sound of this fretless. Very deep and punchy. It's pretty close to a musicman 5 to my ears. EDIT. I see you already have a pre EB stingray, but perhaps a 5er version or a sabre to change it up a bit? Neither of them sound exactly like a stingray.

Good idea to stick with eden, as you like your current head anyhow. Nice sounding stuff. Let us know your results!

A more powerful amp will help, but not by much. I had a 600w epifani ul502 and whilst it was pretty loud, the voicing was quite wide, and consequently my tonehammer 500 seems to have more volume, but in reality, its just more mid forward and not as deep. Something to consider regarding EQ. It still won't sound truly massive even with 1000w, just louder. Ever played through an SVT/8x10? Not many watts, but sounds and feels huge because of the surface area of the speakers. If you need loads more volume, get more speakers, not more watts. Do you stand right next to your rig? Getting the speakers up higher closer to your ears may help too. Worth trying that before spending lots of cash.

Yamaha is a good call. You may be able to get a Lakland 5501 for about 450-500 second hand, that's also a good quality instrument with Fender-ish influences, so it won't feel totally alien compared to your Jazz. Regarding string spacing: I am only 5'10" and I play a 35" scale 5 string with medium string spacing, I think it's around the 18mm mark. In my experience it's more to do (for me) with the depth (front to back) of the neck that makes comfortable. I actually like a wide-ish neck, as long as it's not very deep. Your personal taste will obviously be different, but I would just try to not rule out certain basses because they don't have a narrow spacing.
Bassists against Brexit?
You got it!

I can't comment on the dollar, as I don't receive/spend in dollars very much, but the pound for the last few months was very strong in relation to the euro until all this Brexit business started being talked about. It's gone from about 1.41 to 1.28 in a few weeks (£:€) When you factor in that the pound is worth less and that there are not just the buying, but the shipping and distributing of the products from the US, one can understand the price hike. -> Thanks Dave. Having said all that, if for some reason I needed to buy another two DB112s because mine were destroyed or stolen, I would, because they kick ass. Not light, but they punch, and go low!

Lightweight amp head for upright and electric - recommend!
Jazzjames replied to andyjevans's topic in Amps and Cabs
My Tonehammer 500 sounds great with my upright, and the eq is good at removing troublesome frequencies, if necessary. It's relatively cheap, loud, reliable, and well made. -

I find my octamizer tracks great with my precision, as it has a full deep sound, which makes it easier for the pedal to track. If you're playing more on the back pickup this could mean that the pedal is having trouble 'understanding' what note you're playing.

If youre going to the usa then there will be room on board in the captain's cupboard, but normally my bass goes in the lockers in the flight is not very busy. I'm in italy right now, arrived with Alitalia and they were pretty cool with me bringing my bass on in a hiscox flight case. I always try and get it on the plane, but I've had it before where they took it down to the hold at the gate, which is much better than checking it in in my opinion. Don't take it in a gig bag.

Down to the wire - Aguilar TH500 or MB Little Tube 800
Jazzjames replied to pendingrequests's topic in Amps and Cabs
This difference between 500w and 800w is not a great deal in terms of volume. My tonehammer 500 is great. I have also used a markbass tube 800 and it worked a treat on the gig. I don't think you'll be dissappointed with either. My advice, try both if possible. -
I play 90% of the time from the 5th fret upwards. I just find it easier when I'm reading or playing off an unfamiliar lead sheet, less position shifts.
Whatever works for you. I was just simply pointing out that the sound is not the same, depending on where you play it on the instrument- One should play a line higher up the neck on lower strings for the reason of sound, not because they haven't got it together down in first position. But hey, this is only my opinion.
I think there is an advantage. You can play higher up the neck but still get those low notes, but the finger stretch is a lot less. When you are adapting from 25inch scale to 34 inch the fret spacing at the head end of the neck can feel an uncomfortably long stretch.
I respectfully disagree with this- it sounds different and not always in a good way. I'd say get used to playing down in half/first position, as that's "where the money is". Playing everything from the 5th fret up is a bit of a cheat. Glad the OP has made what sounds like a sound decision. I hope you're happy with your bass!
Thanks for the link, it's swung me back to undecided when I was heading in the direction of the 5
At the end of the day everyone here (me included) could probably get better results by just learning to play the instrument better, however many strings you prefer. Jamerson used 4, sounded great, Anthony Jackson uses 6, also sounds great. The reason they both sound awesome? Because they are masters of their instruments.

Read this before you buy. http://www.recordingmag.com/resources/resourceDetail/134.html At the end of the day though, the yamaha 5er will probably do a super job. Try before you buy!

Looks well dodgy to me, but what do I know... Here's the link for those who are interested. My advice- proceed with caution! http://m.ebay.co.uk/...4285?nav=SEARCH

Aguilar TH500. Loud, sounds good, reliable, cheap (second hand), what's not to like?

Hi All, So now that they're available in europe, I was thinking of getting a set of 5 string P/J pickups from Aguilar for my Mike Lull PJ5. Does anyone have any experience of these pickups, or their 4 string version? I want to retain the woody nature of the bass, and the classic tone, but I feel that the pickups are a touch polite in comparison to the bareknuckle in my 4 string fender. Bareknuckle don't do 5 string pickups, otherwise I'd be on to them already. I have tried nordstrands albeit in a sadowsky metro, and I wasn't a fan. Any other suggestions? Thanks, James
you are probably right but i've tried to teach myself to read music 3 times and I just can;t seem to make it make sense to me, what I hear doesn't translate to the dots on the page. Even with piano I can play 3 blind mice by ear , when i see the notes it means nothing... its some kind of musical dyslexia I think... Its a bummer as all the music I really like is very complex.... I will try and do as you suggest, have the tabs and music together see if that helps!!
This is what a teacher is for. Good on you for trying though. I would also recommend trying to learn to read music properly, tab means nothing. If you're going to learn it from tab, you're already transcribing the rhythm, so you've done half of it yourself anyway! Why not try to figure it out yourself?

Which one is louder: Tecamp 500 or Aguilar Th500?
Jazzjames replied to Radchenko's topic in Amps and Cabs
OK, probably my fault for not putting about ten smilies at the end of my post. I do not think that the TH350 is a 500W amp, and I'm quite well aware that output power ratings have little bearing on 'loudness', however you want to define it. Like many of my posts, the comment was intended to be cynical. I thought the ellipsis at the end of the sentence would have been sufficient to indicate this, but apparently not.
My bad. Fooled me. And i thought i'd better say something in case someone else (who is also gullible) thought that because the power units in the tonehammers are used for higher wattage applications in other amps, that therefore they are more powerful than they say. -
A redhead is going to be damn heavy with the original speakers, or with neo ones. If you want something light, look elsewhere. However, if you can deal with the weight, they sound great.
