1.
Zing and sparkle is totally a tweeter thing. Four piezo tweeters glued together in a vertical array and plugged into your extension cab socket will give you that for about £10. http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/productd...jsp?SKU=LS02367 Alex
Thanks but there's no ext. speaker socket!
2. I've recently sold my Eden Nemesis NC410 combo (4x10 + tweeter) and took an Ashdown electric Blue 130 (1x12) in PX as I didn't want to be ampless and I've liked playing through these wee amps before. Now I've had the EB130 for a few weeks I miss the high end sparkle that seems to come with HF Horn/tweeter equipped combos. So I'm considering moving the Ashdown on and getting something of a similar size but with a bit more hi end zing. Any suggestions for anything that'll be about £300? Some of the Ampegs seem to come into that bracket but I'm not sure what else there is.
3. No P Bass gas for me - too few frets
4. Cool T shirt - will need to check out our nearest branch!
5. I have to agree with you as my Groove has an active/passive switch
6.
"Bonin in the Boneyard" has to be the greatest song title ever!
Definitely right up there! The lyrics to the bass solo/middle 8/breakdown section are 'Funky Bass, Funky Ass Bass,' repeated over and over.
7.
Blimey, that's something special. Any chance of some pics in the bass porn section?
I'll get on it.
8.
she's lost control - joy division
+1 for that - could say the same for a lot of Joy Division/New Order's output but I'd add: Joy Division - Digital, Deal Souls and Atmosphere New Order - Age of Consent, Regret, Sunrise Apart from that: Faith No More - Anne's Song, Land of Sunshine, Just a Man, King for a Day Fishbone - Bonin in the Boneyard, Lemon Meringue Neville Bros. - Hercules And of course all of Oasis' songs
9. Bigwan - maybe try scouring the bargain CD bins and independent record shops for old funk and disco CDs. I've got 2 or three that I only paid a couple of quid each for and there's some amazing tunes on there: Hercules by The Neville Brothers, For the Love of Money by the O'Jays, Good Times by Chic, even Kung Fu Fighting! etc. A lot of older hip hop uses great samples from the likes of Parliament etc (instead of the likes of Sting and Annie the Musical), some of the sleeve notes will say where the sample came from. Parliament and Funkadelic are great too - Funkadelic could be quite 'rocky' too. James Brown too. Ska and reggae albums and compilations are worth a look too - The Beat, Specials, Toots and Maytals, Bob Marley, etc (I'm not a hardcore reggae fan).
10.
I'm glad I got an English Ashdown secondhand then!
Me too - I just got an Electric Blue 130 as PX for my (Chinese) Nemesis last week - the first thing I did was look to see where the EB was made.
Personally I don't spend enough time worrying where stuff was made, I just want to own it. If I had the financial freedom to be discerning I'd try to be more ethical with who gets my cash, or at least I think I would be. Until that time arrives however, I'll just have to amble on with sweat-shop goods at low prices.
That's a good point. I am lucky enough to have the luxury of being able to choose what I buy and where from, etc. Just make sure the quality is up to it.
11.
That 'bass' is covered (hehheh) i have a 75ri, a squier vmj and a geddy on the way plus my other basses so the wood necked jazz is taken care of!
I'd stick with the graphite neck then if I was you (although I'm not so you can ignore that if you like). Which Squier do you have? They are so good looking and so affordable, the GAS pains get very intense when I see them - it's the lack of frets that stop me though.
12.
I thought the Groove basses had wooden necks. Is it an aftermarket addition?
Mine has a factory fitted Status MM neck as it was an end of production one and they'd run out of standard necks - I think mine is one of only 2 like this. Mine is natural alder and the other was all black. It's a lovely bass and as close to a Modulus Flea as I'll ever get, especially for £700 inc hiscox LiteFlite. I also like the fact it's made in England and I've spoken to the man who made it. I'd always liked Grooves except for the droopy headstock - and mine doesn't have that!
13. I use both - my Status Groove has a graphite neck and my Warwick Streamer Std is about as woody and organic as it gets with just the oiled finish. I like them both equally TBH. If you have the cash you should try the wood neck and see how you get on - it's the only way you'll really know. You can always sell either neck on at a later date when you make your decision. Either that or save up and have similar basses one with a wood neck and one with graphite.
14. Good question. I try fairly hard to be an 'ethical shopper' but it's nearly impossible. I do try and minimise the amount of stuff I buy that comes from countries with dodgy human rights records like China, cut down food miles, buy as local as possible and even grow some veg in the garden! I also avoid buying Chinese made musical and electronic equipment if I can because I don't think the quality is as good as it could be. I've definitely noticed a difference between Ashdown combos and speakers with Made in England compared to the inferior (in my experience) Made in China equivalents. The Japanese made lens on my wife's old Minolta film SLR is definitely of higher quality construction than the more recent Chinese made Minolta and Sony equivalents (all 3 are the standard entry level kit lens).
15. Check out Bauhaus, David C is the bassist I think. She's In Parties is a great bass line. Norwood Fisher of Fishbone plays fretless in a few songs but the only one I can recall off the top of my head is 'They All Have Abandoned Their Hopes' from the album Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Centre of the Universe. He also plays fretless on a track on Jerry Cantrell's first solo album.
16. Rattus Norvegicus - The Stranglers Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division All Mod Cons - The Jam King for a Day Fool for a Lifetime - Faith No More
17. Zoom RT 123 drum machine now sold pending the usual.
18. Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division) is the first person I think of when it comes to 6 string bass - a very different playing style and sound and set up to the low B to high C types being discussed on here. It's not just noodly fusion or prog that gets played on 6s. Both Brian Molko and Stefan from Placebo have used Fender bass VIs. In fact I'm pretty sure that Jack Bruce used one of these with Cream. I play exclusively on 4 strings now but I've had 2 fives and a Danelectro 30" scale baritone I had modified to be tuned E-E (like a 4 string with a high B and E). I am not a great player (probably not even very good TBG) by any means and I can't 'noodle' or 'shred' or whatever. I just used whatever bass guitars I could to try get sounds I had in my head out of the speakers. I've gone back to fours because I didn't find much advantage playing chords using a 5 string strung with a high C and the fretting was awkward. Possibly a narrow string spacing 5 would sort that but I don't have the money. I also found that I never went below low D when I strung it with a B string. Anyway I think that 6 string basses look pretty cool, some better looking than their 4 string equivalents - but the only ones I tried have been too wide in the neck for my hands.
19. I quite enjoyed that actually - I might need to go and buy a black polo neck. He plays bass better with one hand than I do with 2!
20. Doing Elvis covers sounds like a lot of fun - lots of true classics there. You should also check our Bubba ho Tep on DVD - Elvis is alive, living in an old folks home and fights the undead with John F Kennedy. Top movie! TBH I'm jealous of people of my mum's generation getting to see Hendrix, Led Zep, Cream, etc live and when they were new. Better than the 'kin Foo Fighters and REM anyday.
21. Bit of an update I managed to get a M-Audio Blackbox with a dedicated floor controller for £95 brand new from Sound Control's Southampton Branch (cheers Rhys). The Black Box is a USB interface with built in drums, guitar/bass FX, amp models and a mic input. The FX are based on the Adrenalinn pedals by Roger Linn. Ableton Live Lite also come bundled with it so it seems that I've managed to get everything I wanted for less than £100. I also sold my amp and got a Ashdown Electric Blue as PX so I still have £105 left to put towards some powered monitors. Any of you used a Blackbox or Ableton Live lite? I think it will take me a while to get my head around all the controls and settings!
