A one trick pony that somehow cuts through in a live gig better than any other! -

hi Phil, the Queens Arms in Brixham, great little venue but its tiny for the band. The sub is behind me next to the drummer and it doubles up as somewhere to put the desk on. The tops are also behind me but as there isn't even enough room for a mic and stand, feedback isn't an issue! The drummer uses one of those vibrating bum stool things for bass so he's cool and our guitarist and singer can hear the bass well enough (not like they care anyway!). The Ampeg isn't going anywhere 'cos (A) it sounds so lush and (B) it looks so rock n roll especially for a 54 year old dad of 2...

Gigged tonight at a small pub with seriously minimal room to swing the proverbial cat, so as usual I forgoe the backline/combo/head& cab (unlike everyone else obviously) and go Tubey DI pedal into desk, out to PA and wedge monitor (for me). Relatively decent gear (budget RCF stuff). Well blow me, its sounds pretty alright you know? Deep punchy bass thanks to the sub, plenty of clear mids and highs thanks to the 2 x 15" tops and decent monitoring from the 12" wedge. I hate , really hate to admit it, but I think the days of my ampeg stack or peavey combo or any other backline are numbered. If I wasn't responsible for the bloody PA (ie store it, carry it around, set it up etc) and all I had to do was turn up with a guitar case and a pedalboard case, I'd be seriously tempted.

What are you listening to right now?
skidder652003 replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
The Dude by Donald Byrd, a great piece of 1970 acid jazz in response to Miles Davis' beaches Brew (well the whole album was), and I play in a sweaty pub rock covers trio, shhh, don't tell the band mates! -
GAS is a terrible thing, lucky for me Im a strict P or J guy (boring I know) into a full fat valve amp and thats it, saying that there was a rather lovely 65 P for sale at a snip over 5K, Release your inner gas and watch the room clear as you (temporarily) feel much better.

yeah done this a couple of times, small admin fee so up your fee accordingly. I think the pub sends you an email link to set it up to their account or something, probably best to contact the venue rather than invapay.

Best mobile phone for recording video/audio
skidder652003 replied to Tubster's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't want to be the first to put a downer on this but I'd rather go dedicated zoom/go pro recorder for gigs especially where audio quality (and battery life ) are conceremed. Saying that if I had to use a phone, Id look second hand, maybe a used Iphone 7 or whats that awesome android phone with 3 cameras? Huawei something? -

Does your band use a sub-woofer as part of your PA?
skidder652003 replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
with the Mackie, it has 2 options in the back. XLR out from tops to either HPF or full range, then sub to desk (sorry that probably sounds the wrong way round) desk to sub, with option of HPF of Full, then out to tops..hmm maybe i should go and take a picture? PS yeah its an active sub, can't see how you could use a passive one without a power amp as well -

Possibly the ONLY time i have to disagree with Phil! We always mic up the drums, guitars and DI the bass through the PA, by this we are (IMO) able to keep the onstage racket under some sort of control. Indeed the drummer has mics for snare, all 3 toms and kick as well as often 1 or 2 overheads (to be fair he does all this himself in 10 minutes), kick and bass through Sub also (carefully controlled). Ok we're a pretty loud band but we have to keep under 90DB for most venues these days or the landlords get sweaty over the neighbours. Phil's the expert here but we always get complimented on our sound by other bands. -
Jeez, check out the middle eight and following guitar solo
