1.
We use the Alto 15 and its great and really good value i highly recommend it 'we' are a reggae band and it deals with everything with ease ... http://www.gear4musi...CFWsq0wod9bQJcA
Thats great, exactly the advice im after, we have an old alto desk and its pretty rugged and im hearing some love for the alto subs for the price they seem quite competative at the lower to mid end of the market, many thanks
2.
What are your current tops?
If the question was adressed to me then we currently use RCF 315,s (active)
3. So our old Peavey subs have died with the lovely stench of plastic burning the nostrils. They were a bit crap anyway and we have decided we only want one new active sub. The budget is £400, preferably new, preferably 15 or 18". Anyone have experience of something in this price range that can still deliver the chest thump? Just for bass drum and bass. Thomman have quite a lot of choice but I haven't got a clue where to start. Many thanks! PS we have decent RCF active tops and monitors but the budget just won't stretch to a RCF sub.
4. Really Good and I mean REALLY good busy busy gigging band, The Swamphogs need a new bass player. I know the guys as we play on the same circuit, so no affiliation per se but a great opportunity to gig at least 2 times a week for good money. Anyway, here's the ad The SwampHogs 6 hrs · BASS PLAYER WANTED Playing a mix of ZZ Top, Doors, Cult, DC, Motorhead, Stones, Howlin Wolf. Our present bass player is looking for a less busy schedule due to change in his work. We're looking for a good solid team player, who loves the material and playing as much as we do. We need someone who's totally committed to this band only - not playing in half a dozen. GSOH, good gear and transport essential. Most gigs are in Plymouth, Newton A, Brixham, Torquay areas plus a few on Dartmoor. If you like the sound of it, and are available to play Fri, Sat and occasionally Sundays (Music Fests) as opportunities arise. Please personal message me and we can look at meeting up.
5.
I loved it from start to finish and think Bowie would have done too! Anna Calvi's version of 'Lady Grinning Soul' was a particular highlight, but there were many others that really moved me. The Five Years documentary is a great watch, with some brilliant rare footage and very insightful journalism.
Fair enough
6. Yep Mrs Skids watched precisley 30 seconds and took to her bed. As a mega mega Bowie Fan, she couldn't stomach it. I think I may have to dig out Hunky Dory on Vinyl just to restore the faith. I hate coming across as an old fart who "doesn't get" new interpretations of material, but I'm sorry, this was just bloody awful.
7. ooof got as far as "Starman" with Mr Almond again, that was it for me. So bad I had to turn the TV off in disgust. Souless, pompous, out of tune codswallop. Rock died tonight.
8. Anyone watching this? It's just not working for me, as much as I admire it's conception, where's Mick Ronson? David was a rock star and this so needs the spiders to make it happen, Marc Almond was simply awful.
9. Oh dear, Ive had a bollocking on here for something similar! Everything from the desk, don't connect any speaker to another if they're active. ie. use the 2 main outs from the desk to each top and then 2 aux outs to each sub, at least thats what I was told.
10. great story! People power, the locals are revolting!
11. could you get to Exeter? Mansons have quite a few basses you could try, and a good number of used ones too.
12. we played our first "proper" wedding last week ( ie not a mate etc). I asked for half up front by baccs and the rest on arrival at the venue in cash. No problems but I did feel awkward approaching the groom on his big day, so if we get any in the future, it'll be half upfront then the rest perhaps a week in advance of the big day, again by bank transfer, with all conditions, setlist, start times, finish times clearly stated in an email.
13. Just bought an Ibanez SR 300 from Mike, he even brought it up to Devon for me! What a top bloke! Buy with confidence, thanks mate
14. Thanks mate, pleasure to deal with you, Harry's loving the Ibanez, just got to sort him a decent amp now!
15.
And there lies the problem, the subs would have not been crossing over and putting out the correct frequency. No crossover, no thumb... you might get a bang though when you blow the amp in the sub.
And therin did lie the problem when we duly blew both subs in quick succession and couldn't understand why to be follwed by a relatively expensive repair. I do now recall it was indeed jack out from the passive tops to xlr in for the subs ( i had the leads made for that very use) so now i get why the subs sounded so so much better with a direct line out from the desk a couple of nights ago! Im sending this thread to our drummer and guitarist, thanks again guys.
16.
No, that can't be right... unless the signal out of the passive tops is a line signal.....??
I think we asumed that the xlr out from the passive tops into the active subs "carried on" the signal as if you were daisy chaining one passive top to another? Totaly ignorant I know!!!
17.
There's no reason for active subs to sound any better with passive versus active tops. Whatever difference heard indicates that you didn't set the system up correctly when using the passive tops.
Im trying to recall how we used to do it Bill, as I remember we used to speakon out of the power amp to the the passive tops and then xlr daisy chain to the active subs rather than a dedicated line to each (now) active speaker from the mixing desk, would that make any difference?
18.
I can't think of any logical reason. I run HK Actor subs with passive EV tops, and I have no issue at all. I do run an EV system controller between the desk and the power amp for the tops, and the sub outputs are from the back of the controller - I imagine this has some influence on the crossing over. How were they wired? Do you have a sub output on the desk which is dedicated to the subs? How were you powering the tops?
so last night when everything sounded huge, 2 XLR Direct sends out from the desk to the active tops. 1 aux send to the active sub, 2 and 3 aux send to the active monitors, so all the speakers self powered
19. it is possible to run an 8 Ohm cab off a 4 Ohm ampeg all tube head (i did for a short while while awaiting my HLF 4 Ohm cab) without any problems but it is not recommended according to forums I looked into (something to do with shortning tube life? But I could be wrong). Likewise switching on a tube head without it being connected to a cab is a big no-no and waiting 20 minutes for the tubes to warm up before coming out of stand-by, and leaving the tubes to cool down after a gig before moving the head! So many new rules to learn!
20. If this is in the wrong forum, mods please move. So, a weird thing happened last night. We have 2 active peavey subs which I have been distinctly underwhelmed with in the past. We used to use them with passive tops, either peavey or EV tops, and they sounded weak and hardly any thump. Anyway last night we used them in a small theatre (250) with our new active RCF tops all from a peavey desk. My God, they sounded huge, really chest thumping, even the bass amp which was a DI'd 15W Gear for Music joke sounded huge! So my question is this, do you need to use active subs with active tops to get the most from them? And if so, why? The difference was incredible to me
21. The Ampeg is very Dark sounding, the tweeter pretty much useless, saying that my guitarist plays his 100W marshall head through an Orange 410 and Im not overly keen on that. The Ampeg suits rock very well isn't too heavy and looks the biz so that would be my choice, saying that, if you're buying new, the barefaced option would get my vote. The ultimate of course would be the Ampeg 610 or 810 !!!
22. used to be a big fanboy of Tracktion, then found Reaper, so another vote there also.
