1. Haha, yes! Maybe I would fit in with the stereotype better too!
2. Cheers guys. But I'm a student too!
3. Perhaps not a great example for the 'deep' tone - mids and highs - yes, that is what the jazz is all about. But I guess the precision-like presence in the mix would be nice - and I don't like favouring the neck pickup.
4. Love the articulate and more versatile tone from the jazz. Found the Precision neck to be too chunky for my womanly hands too.
5. So one thing I love about my Jazz bass is the versatility, but I'm hunting for a really 'deep' yet cutting punk tone. I guess it could be a humbucker-kinda sound I want.. like Greg K from Conspiracy and Americana-era Offspring, ala http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVhM2XcGE0E Can anyone suggest pickups that could produce this type of tone? Many thanks.
6. Orange first choice, Red second.
7. Really lock the simple groove with the drummer, I wouldn't be too flashy for the sake of it. Simple, steady, solid
8. Dunlop Tortex 1.2mm for me (the purple ones).
9.
Trouble is that, as I said earlier. In the UK, Punk wasn't as limited as just shouty thrashy guitar rock from angry boys, and whenever I hear people try to impoverish the term "punk" in this way a part of me dies inside. What you seem to define as punk just sounds to me like a poppier version of thrash metal. To define punk to such a tiny, unimaginative, limited box is to make me wish punk HAD died in 1979.
I think it's just to do with the problem of how we define the genre nowadays. Too many elitists telling me what is and isn't 'real' punk. They can shove it.
10. Propagandhi are the modern punk/thrash band for me. I love them and NOFX - they have funny little 'digs' at each other in songs. Check out 'Supporting Caste' album - best album of 2009 IMO. Todd Kowalski is a great bassist too.
11.
+1....its starting dude! I listen to NOFX all the time, and I still like his twangy tone, but Ive tried doing it in a band and it just sounds too thin unless you really have your volume high.
I'm a fan too, and I think you're right. Whenever I hear a tone that sounds good and really 'sticks out' from the band - be it NOFX or Iron Maiden - you kinda know it wouldn't work in a modern-day band situation. Steve Harris and Fat Mike (correct me if I'm wrong) - are both 'leaders' of the bands. In this way, they can have more say about how loud the bass is.
12. I'm so inconsistent - my tone goals/aims and music tastes frequently flip every 2 weeks or so. It's something I've learnt to put up with. I'd blame it on being a teenager, but I'm one year out of that phase In that way, I'm glad I got a Jazz bass at least.
13.
Plus who was playing the bass? Noone visible so either the bassist was off stage or they were playing to a recording ( which thought wasn't allowed)
I did wonder. Also 'Cee-Lo's bass player would get it...it being (insert witty response here)' - Amen. I need to watch Jamiroquai on Later..
14. At the moment, dead Rotos But otherwise clean and zingy Rotosound Swing 66s.
15.
Miles Davis, The Beatles, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Genesis, James Brown, Stevie Wonder. Lady Gaga, The Killers, Tiny Tempah, Pixie Lott, Rihanna, Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift, David Guetta, the cast of Glee. The consumer has got lazy and considerably more people are willing to put their faith in some television based competition like X-Factor for their musical pleasure as opposed to actively seeking out new music, that's what's changed. Not that they have much choice in the matter anyway.
You get a +1 from me. However, they all have choices - some are just too narrow-minded to see it.
16. Brilliant, thanks for sharing
17.
Absolutely. AC/DC never did a thing for me either, except when I'm shedded in a rock club. Now, Jellyfish, that was a band...
Indeed, it's amazing what you suddenly find yourself liking/dancing when restricted to certain artists I don't know Jellyfish I'm afraid.
18.
Good playing. But that 'song' is nothing but a bassline with scat/blues vocals over the top. Nice for some, not for me.
Sure, each to their own But we could all 'split' songs down like you did by most artists - similar way to how I dislike AC/DC - formulaic rock drivel (that all sounds kinda samey).
19.
I was in my teens. Formed an original band. Didn't make it big. Decided that playing covers to people was better than sitting in my bedroom whiddling away. And actually earned money.
Seems like the path I'm going to follow. I know what music I want to write - I just can't. And I can't sing either. However, I learn covers quickly and thoroughly and love playing them.
20. In a band situation, a poor bass player is selfish and unsupportive - not providing the foundations the music needs to build from. There's a difference in being tasteful and tasteLESS.
21. I have a Classic 70s Jazz bass and love it. Real nice playing and good looking bass. I had an issue with the neck being warped after I bought it, but I managed to send it back to Fender and had a new one put on (for free). The sound is really great.
22. 'Furniture' basses and generally Ibanez/ similar-looking 'modern' basses.
23. Hey there. I'm moving up to Bristol very soon for my final year at uni, jam sessions sound good. Whereabouts do you play?
24. I'm looking at getting a grittier all-encompassing jazz bass tone for punk (a bit more P-bass and Musicman like) - would I need humbucking jazz pickups for this, and would it work?
25. It's really great that Si helped a lot of people with this thread. I'm on the third year of my web design degree so if anyone needs any advice - just shout. I feel I should try and follow in his footsteps to an extent.
