She's a beaut  Mapleglo Ric's give me terrible GAS. You've made a lovely job of her I love my '80 Jetglo 4001 to bits, and would never part with it
-
Here's one for the ageing Goth's amongst you :brow: "Celebrate" by Fields Of The Nephilim. All you get is bass and vocals. Easy to play too And for the Metal Hedz.......Does "The Thing That Should Not Be" by Metallica qualify as slow?? Uber heavy riff, intro sounds cool on bass

Cheers Chaps

That made me scratch my head for a moment, as my initials are actually RM!! I'll have to ask the boss to post up some piccy's, as I'm useless at it!

The bank account took an unexpected pounding this morning Saw something advertised that wasn't too far away, had a try on it, and then charged round to the bank Came away with a 30th anniversary Stingray! WOW, what a sexy thing to play on, and loving the whole retro look  This is also my first active bass, and I am amazed by the amount of different tones you can get. I read somwhere that there was only 800 of these built?? I'll see if I can post up a piccy in a bit

+1......I would call it a day. I've been in that situation before, and it gets very frustrating when it is left to you to do all the work. Another option might be to grin and bare it, and maybe see if some of the other bands you have a shared a bill with could get you a decent gig? Might even be worth calling a band meeting, and tell them all exactly how you feel. If that doesn't shake them up a bit, I would definately say it's time to leave.

Very yummy collection sir Got any piccy's of the 4001CS?? -
(Ooops, sorry Retroman, hi-jacking your thread. Please excuse!)
You are excused sir. I am a very laid back kinda dude I have to admit, that Shuker did get me thinking.....But truth be known, that colour is a little too "sudden" for my taste. I have real GAS for a 70's type jobbie, with a rosewood board, and big block inlays  Also, I think things could look a little far out with that colour, against our guitarists cherry SG! No offence meant, just not my cuppa, and it would be a shame to do a refin on such a lovely bass I'm starting to think along the lines of pushing the boat out, and getting the full on USA 75 reissue. Reasons being; 1) resale value. I've noticed that the Jap stuff doesn't hold it's value anywhere near as well, should I need to sell it on 2) Hard case. With the Jap, and the Lakland, I've noticed you only get a gig bag. (Gig bag with a £1000 bass, that's just rude.......) However, I am watching the for sale section like a hawk, and will pounce faster than a striking cobra at the right deal! I am also aware that I could get a Mex 75 reissue, but I sold a Mex jazz bass, as I found it rather average.....Not really anything wrong with it, but not anything really good about it, if you see what I mean

A few thoughts from someone who used to paint cars for a living You have pretty much been doing things the right way. When I have refinished bass bodies, I have always rubbed them down with a rubbing down block, to get them dead flat. Apply primer coats in even, reasonable light coats, and allow 24 hours minimum to dry, and sink. The more coats of primer the better, if you are working with aerosol cans. Next put a mist coat of black over the body, and allow to dry. Next wet flat with 800, or 1200, with a rubbing down block, and allow the paper to do the work - eg, don't push down hard on the block to try and speed things up! The idea of the mist coat of black is to provide a "guide coat". Where ever the guide coat is left behind, shows up where you have flaws in your primer, eg, pin holes, dings, etc. If you are seriously struggling, might be worth popping round to a local car accident repair centre. Business for them is pretty slow at the moment, and they can do a really professional job using two pack primers and paint. I refinished the body on my old Aria about 15 years ago, using ICI two pack primer, Ford Petrol Blue base coat, and two pack lacquer. Wet flatted it very carefully with 2000 grit after painting, and then machine polished it to a very deep shine. Still looks mint to this day Depends what your bass is worth to you, and how fussy you are really Hope this helps

OK, tried out some Jazz basses today, came home empty handed though! Here's my thoughts; Fender Mexico Jazz. Nicely put together, and nice finish. Found it fairly average to play though, with a medium height/heavy action Fender Deluxe jazz. The active one, with the fancy top, and the extra fret. Didn't find it much better than the Mex, IMHO. Action was fairly high, looked in need of a truss rod tweak at the least Sandberg jazz. Very nicely put together, and gorgeous finish. Loved the bridge on this one too. The strings did sound fairly dead though, and it had a rather high action. Again, looked in need of a truss rod tweak Fender Japan Marcus Miller Jazz. WOW!! Beautifully made, gorgeous finish, and sublime to play. Lovely low/ leight action, with no buzz. Very impressed. The only thing that puts me off the MM signature Jazz is the scratch plate. Not that there is anything wrong with it, just prefer the look of the standard Jazz set up. Still fancy trying out the Lakland DJ, anybody know of one of these in stock around the Sheffield/ Nottingham area??
-
For you guy's around the Sheffield area.....Just thought I would give you a quick "heads up" Electro Music, Doncaster, have both the new Epi Pro T bird, and a "proper" USA Thunderbird in stock. The Epi is in the natural finish, and I have to admit, looks very nicely built

I'm loving my SVT classic  For some seriously dirty, valve overdrive, how about the signature Marshall Lemmy Super Bass head? I've been sorely tempted, but it doesn't fit with my current bands sound, hence the SVT

Thanks for the great review Very interesting read, as some of the above are on my GAS list

Some good stories here It's been a strange year in the world of the retrodude Wound up having to quit work, as bullying and harrasment by the management quite literally drove me nuts............ Sold my monster Trace Elliot V Type full rig, as I was completely disheartened with the whole band thing Started switching to playing one of those weird things, with six tiny strings on them In some respects, pretty much at one of the all time lowest points of my life. BUT....every cloud does have a sliver lining! I now find myself playing bass in a really good originals band, and we have a really good agent behind us, that is working very hard behind the scenes, and has even managed to book us a TV appearance in 2010! Very lucky to be playing with two very tallented guys as well. I didn't even see it coming to be honest! Just goes to show, you never can tell what's just round the corner
-
OK guys, you have just about twisted my arm.........Looks like the Geddy Lee is the one then?
-
Thanks Chaps, I have to admit, when I got down to the Lake Placid blue Jazz, pictured above, I had a serious GAS attack!! That is simply gorgeous  I have been thinking about the Geddy Lee Jazz, seems to be a damn good bass for your money, and has been getting rave reviews. I'm not overly concerned as to the bass coming with the covers, or a hard case. I've seen the covers on Ebay recently for as little as £20, so I would be foolish to pay, say, an extra £300 on a bass just to have them I agree 100% with the comment about not seeing any Jap Fenders on Ebay. I take that to be a good sign as to the quality, and the fact that people are hanging on to them. In fact, I always use Ebay as a "Crapometer".......
-
I once saw one of my hero's literally boot a fan of theirs off the stage! Then the bass player, and the drummer tried to bring calm to the situation. I think that the fan had it coming to be honest
-
Cheers for the advice, and thanks for the link Clarky I've had a look at the link, and the Jazz basses that float my boat are at the bottom of the page, as you suggested, and are around the £1000 mark. I have seen the American Vintage at around £1200, so is the Japanese option a lot better?? Hope I don't sound too thick, it's just I don't know an awful lot about Fender's
-
First off, appologies if this type of thread has been done to death, But help me make sense of it all.............. I have GAS for a Jazz bass, and the options are overwhelming. Got it bad for a 70's type jobbie, with the ash tray, and block markers. Fender American vintage at well into four figures Mexican version, at around 500 quid Squier Vintage Modified at around 280 quid One of the super J copies, such as Lakland, etc. OK, as far as the fender jobbies is concerned, I know that the US model uses an Ash body, the Mex is Alder, then the Squier is "Soft Maple". I know that the US model does come with the covers, and a proper case......But is the US model really worth the extra dosh?? I would prefer one with a rosewood board, so I guess that rules out the Squier. How do the super J type basses, from the likes of say, Lakland, stack up against the "Fender" range? Do they offer better playability, tone, and value for money? Budget wise, I don't want to be looking over £1500, but I don't want to feel like I've bought a lemon at the end of it! If it helps, I favour basses with a nice light, low action. Cheers Peeps

Thanks for the kind words Lozbass I will continue to decline to name and shame, until I have given the manufacturer, and the dealer fair chance to resolve the issues I have. I think that it's only fair to allow them that opportunity first.
-
I too am having major issues over a bass I paid four figures for...................... The action was that high I didn't know whether to play it, or fire arrows with it! Paint finish on the front of the body is very ripply Heavy orange peel on the side of the neck Small chip of wood missing out the fret board Finish was still soft (first time I attempted to play it, it left an imprint of my jeans in the finish)! I have just sent a fairly lengthy e-mail to the manufacturer of this bass, outlining the above issues, and that I find it totally unacceptable. I will decline to name and shame at the moment, until I get some resolution on the above. I have recieved a prompt reply. Bitterly dissappointed considering I have 2 basses that I paid around £200 for that are better finished In today's age, I expect perfection when I hand over a huge wad of cash for something, especially when the manufacturers website makes a huge deal about how carefully they select their woods, and the stringent quality control processes that each guitar goes through, at each stage of the build. I see no evidence of this in my bass..............

CCCOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL!!!! I love all things doom, and it's been a few years since I last saw these guys. I would love to know how he gets that guitar tone

What's the most over-rated bass, or bass related product???
retroman replied to silverfoxnik's topic in General Discussion
+1......The last set of roto's I bought were as rough as a badgers back passage, and would have been more useful as files!! -
Not got that much, but here goes anyway.... Fully autographed LP by Motorhead. It's the "Rock 'N' Roll " album from 1987. Billy Sheehan's autograph. Had a very brief chat with him after a bass clinic he done Doom Legend Wino's autograph on a Spirit Caravan CD booklet Fully autographed copy of Motorhead's "Motorizer" album as well. I have too many rare and unusual 7", and 12" stuff to list up on here. I'm a bit of a sad hoarder really!

Congrats Dude! Hope all goes well for you
