1.
rickenbacker nostalgia ...vomit! this also includes any oldies which seem to GAS to death our sensible brothers
Rickenbacker? I love my 4001 to bits, and it has the loveliest low action Horses for courses I guess
2. Don't forget though, that Cronos from Venom, and Lemmy, were both guitarists, that switched to bass......Well, Lemmy still is a guitarist, just plays four strings instead of six! I agree though, Lemmy is GOD, and it is a miracle he is still alive, given his lifestyle How about Les Claypool? Man that guy's good at singing, and playing bass As for me? I'm crap at it! Play the bass OK, my singing is a little hit and miss - I seem to be able to sing really well one day, and then sound dreadful the next! Put the two together, and they both sound awful
3. Top effort, and catchy tune I watched it all the way through
4.
Do you mean 'would not be interested'?
LOL I did mean interested, in order to form a decent, and fair opinion
5. OOPS! Hope I haven't started something there To me, I would be interested if you tried the bass through an Ashdown. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against their gear, it's just not my cuppa. Sounded too compressed, and lacked any balls to my ears. I have an all valve Ampeg SVT Classic, which I dare say there are a few out there thinking "oh, one of those horrible vintage sounding things", but it's the sound I like If someone posted, for example "I tried bass "X" through an SVT, and the tone was huge" that would tempt me to try out the same bass......(and then get a GAS attack ) I too agree about the lazy shop comment......I recently ordered a Tbird brand new, and when I collected it, it had a neck like Robin Hood's bow, and the intonation wasn't that clever either. All sorted now though I have tried several new basses, and the set up on them has been shocking, as if they have just been taken out the box, and hung on the wall. Not very clever if you are trying to sell the thing......
6. Would a Gordon Smith Graduate 60 Les Paul float ya boat?? If not, have a free bump on me I have serious GAS for a Jazz at the mo, and not too far from you
7.
It can be risky testing an expensive bass through an expensive amp because you end up buying the bass and the amp.
LOL Thanks chaps, some good replies. I've been using Electro for years, on and off, and they are good about letting you take your time, and try as much stuff as you want. I must have been in there 2 hours at least, trying amps out. I just thought it would be handy to know what other gear everyone had tried at the same time, to let people make a better opinion. After all, if you try an EB2, slap the hell out of it through a little combo, you're going to be very disappointed at the result!
8. I would suggest trying Autoglym super resin polish before reaching for the T cut. It will remove minor scuff marks very successfully, without too much risk of rubbing through on edges. If you need an abrasive polish, I would suggest buying a bottle of 3M "Finesse It". It's much kinder to paint than T cut. I have always used the above on my basses, and always had fantastic results, including on the nitro cellulose finish on my old EB2. Hope this helps
9. Hi Peeps, I always read peoples reviews of different basses on this forum with interest. Quite often I have read comments along the lines of "I tried this bass, was really excited, tone was poor, not worth the £2K price tag" My main concern is perhaps it would be an idea to post up what amp you tried the bass through? We all have huge preferences of Amplifier manufacturers, and types, and, to be honest, £6K worth of Alembic could sound rubbish if put through a little 10W practice combo Also, might be an idea to post up how you played it, Slap, Fingers, Pick, etc, as this also effects the tone. Just a thought, as a lot of people read this forum, and I feel it would allow people to draw a broader opinion of the comments made about the bass. Whats Ya Thoughts?
10.
If they're the original strings from the factory, they're Elixir coated mediums, at gauges .045", .065", .085" and .105". Don't ask me how I know. I just do.
Another +1 That's exactly what my Ibanez IC200 came with
11. Yeah, I did dude It's just I though you were on about the scales that you sit something on, as opposed to scales that you hang something off Then again, I am starting to knock on a bit in years
12. My favourite basses are my; Rickenbacker 4001 finished in Jetglo Gibson EB2 in Cherry Red Gibson Thunderbird IV in Vintage Burst Ibanez IC200 "Iceman" in Vintage Burst The Ric is in semi retirement now, as is the EB2. The main basses I play are the Thunderbird, or the Iceman, but mostly the Thunderbird. Absolutely love it. Plays gorgeous, big fat tone, and...............NO NECK DIVE!!!! Just use a really good quality padded leather strap :brow:
13. If you want to weigh a bass, how about scales for fishing?? I would think it would be very easy just to put the hook around the stem of one of the machine heads, and lift Have to admit, it's nice having a few lighter basses about. Playing the Rickenbacker for three hours straight in rehearsal does make my lower back ache
14.
Bass snobs with a grand plus basses will always look down there noses at Squiers, but its horses for courses and for the money they are hard to beat.
I own several grand plus basses, and own a Squier P Bass Special! The set up out the box was OKish, but with a set of quarter pounders fitted, and a bit of tinkering with the truss rod, and the bridge, and it's an awesome bass, for about a third of the price of a MIA. Every Squier, or MIM I have played has IMHO been well built, and just needed a few tweeks. I used to have a Mex Jazz V, and that was good out the box. I know there is the argument of quality of woods, electronics, etc, but I think there is a good argument for buying a Squier, or a MIM, fitting decent pickups, and saving a lot of money. Out the box, they do offer VFM though.
15. With an 18" cab, and an EB2, you will move moons out of orbit :brow: Have to admit, that GS Galaxy has given me GAS! I do have a real sweet spot for semi's Last time I visited the GS website, there was quite an interesting page on how they build the guitars.....Including using an inner tube off a dump truck to glue the figured tops on!
16. Good man! Well done
17. +1 on getting your SVT fixed, I love mine to bits
18. Cheers Shaggy I see from your Sig you have one too? I love that old thing to bits. It has enough low end to destroy planets!
19. Yeah, good luck matey, hope you get the gig
20. I too own a Gordon Smith, but not a bass though. It's a Graduate 60 Les Paul Copy. The build and finish of it is sublime. It really does play fantastically, although the pickups are perhaps a little too hot for my liking, though they can't be that bad, as I haven't bothered to change them yet! If GS started building basses again, I would most definately look at buying one, as they're guitars offer serious value for money, IMHO
21.
In a similar vein, I would add Metallica ...And Justice for All. Some great songs ruined or held back by lackluster production, but then again, that is often their trademark.
+1 on that..... more like a hatchet job, than a production job. You can barely hear Jason's bass
22. OK, here goes with piccy's of some of my gear
23. Here's another one.......Motorhead!! Lemmy isn't a bass player.....He's a guitarist with four strings!!
24.
Agree on the Bass in Jug Full of Sun! Another Doom fan here, saw Saint Vitus at Hellfest this year, even met Dave Chandler whilst watching Orange Goblin! I didn't think I would ever see them play live, never mind meet some of the band!
Yeah, I've seen footage of that on youtube. Love Vitus, especially their song "Dying Inside". Wino's vocals were awesome in Vitus. I've been lucky enough to meet Wino a couple of times. Really cool guy, and signed some stuff for me. Very intense dude though! Met him, Sherman, and Gary Isom when Spirit Caravan were over here promoting "Elusive Truth" Always cool to meet your heros, especially when they turn out to be good guys
