1.
I sort of feel sorry for liverpool actually - its a microcosm of the general british 'hey, remember in the past when we did something good?' er, no, i wasn't born and neither were you..? Do a new thing, liverpool!
+1000 I've said it so many times before, but when I started going to gigs over the water in late 70s early 80s, there was none of this Beatles nostalgia crap, bands clearly wanted to created their own scene and they did... the bunnymen, wah heat, the teardrops, omd, frankie etc etc ...
 2.
What I said was not Anecdotal, it was true, of the 2 people I mention at least I think they where lucky in their time, I doubt that package is on offer to school leavers now
It is anecodtal in the context of this discussion because no one is able to verify that what you say is entirely true... perhaps these individuals have inherited some property or wealth you are unaware of, for example? That said, as someone about to enter their 50s later this year, and who has spend about half their working life in the public sector, I certainly won't be retiring in the next 10 years and I doubt any of my public sector colleagues will either...
 3.
No - but sick leave is laughably uncontrolled in some councils, and 'performance reviews' are just tick boxes.
And you know this how?
 4.
I know 2 public sector workers who will retire very soon in their 50s with no change in lifestyle , only a serious pension pot will allow that. Im pleased for them , don't get me wrong.
Anecdotal evidence is rarely a useful indicator of the true facts. For example, my dad retired in his 50s and worked in the shipping industry...
 5.
Jobs for life in the public sector stopped a long time ago. I know that from experience as I was one of many that was made redundant.
Indeed, yet this myth still persists. Neither have pay levels increased to those of the private sector by way of compensation...
 6. Voted, some interesting stuff this month.. well done peeps!
 7.
Are you Swiss Tony?
You've got to start by caressing the neck very gently, then when you've warmed her up, begin to strum more urgently with the tips of your fingers, gradually building speed until the low throbbing makes the whole room start to shake... Sorry, got a bit carried away there. But to answer the OP, to some degree yes, I find playing bass physically enjoyable in terms of the sensation . Not sure about the horn part though...
 8.
Please no, that would be boring You've clearly had a pop at the players and punters , its all on page 1, you cant duck out now
Whatever you say...
 9. I clearly didn't say that though, did I... But let's not allow the facts to get in the way of rhetoric huh?
Covers can be good and entertaining, depending on the band and their approach.
10. My handmade KGB bass which I've had from new will be 25 this year. It has buckle rash, lots of little dings on the body and the lacquer on the neck has developed some hairline cracks. I guess I could have taken a little more care of it perhaps, but I’ve never damaged it seriously and it has served me extremely well. I bought it to play and play it I have. If I was fussed I suppose could get it refinished but I’ve grown to quite like its battle scarred appearance. Most importantly, it still plays as well as when I got it...
 11.
Any views on original bands playing impeccable versions of their own stuff (Eagles spring to mind; other acts are available...)..? Just curious; no malice intended.
I hate the f***in’ Eagles man… I think impeccably played live music can be fantastic, as long as it retains some energy and verve, otherwise it can be a little dull. I personally prefer it when live bands play around a little with their songs (or at least some of them), rather than simply regurgitating the recorded versions note for note.
 12.
Ah, but you are not just questioning the validity of the tribute thing, are you? You are a literate enough chap and you know that you are being condescending in a way that is designed to provoke
I'm being a little provocative perhaps. What's wrong with that?
 13.
that's freaking hilarious
Glad u enjoyed it.
 14.
There appears to be a musical snobbery that the covers players are deemed to be inferior musicians to the ones playing in original bands, I think this attitude stinks.
Straw man argument - I didn't say that at all, I'm just questioning the whole validity of the tribute thing. Personally, I'd rather watch 10 original bands, of which only 1 or 2 might be any good, rather than 10 tribute acts who play impeccable versions of whatever band’s songs. I guess it all depends why you go to gigs. If you want to see something safe and predictable you can sing along to whilst basking in the warm nostalgic glow of your youth, go suck those tribute acts up. I just happen to think it’s boring and pointless. I really don’t care how much money they make or how much the x factor loving masses enjoy them or how fantastic the musicians who play in them are.
 15.
Well, one of the biggest musical events of all time will be taking place in a couple of months. It involves the greatest musicians in the world at the moment, and is being put together my Paul Mcartney, Mick Jagger, Elton John and one or two others along the way. It will rival anything else that has been staged in music history, and will generate millions in revenue on the day of, and in the aftermath of the event. It will be a 'tribute' to one of, if not the greatest musical genius of the last 50 years. All those fortunate enough to be a part of this event will not play any of there own material, yet this ' tribute ' event could rival some of the biggest televised events of all time. To get a ticket for this show, will be little short of a miracle, and you will undoubtedly be in the company of a cast of superstars, just grateful to be audience members....
How fabulous...
 16.
So what totally original band are you in then, and where can we come and see you play?
I'm not at the moment, but I'm busy writing tunes all the time and I'm hoping to get something together this year. Does this help?
 17.
No ta, I don't like buns so I won't eat one.
That's ok, I'll take them to the park and chuck 'em at the fakers then... they should be nice and hard by June.
 18.
Hey I've just come up with a brilliant idea for people who don't like the idea of 'fake festivals' or tribute bands in general. It's a fairly extreme idea and might appear to be pretty left-field, but I'll try it anyway and you can see what you think. OK, here goes. If you don't like the idea of a 'fake festival' or a tribute band gig... (and here comes the clever bit) ...don't go to one. Pretty radical stuff I know, but I reckon it could work.
Wow, you're right, that was clever, not to mention highly original... have a bun.
 19.
So how does it feel to be a -- what was it -- "middle aged unimaginative muso"? (Does this description apply to all of us who play covers, by the way?)
Covers can be good and entertaining, depending on the band and their approach. Tribute bands are basically panto... Cue cries of 'Oh no they're not etc...'
 20.
It's cringe worthy, isn't it?
Nice to see I'm not alone Bilbo...
 21.
You don't seem too impressed Mr Knees. Enlighten us...
Do I really need to? Where do I start? When did the concept of fake become desirable, let alone saleable? I remember local band festivals happening in the same park some years ago and jolly good they were too. Why would anyone want to watch a bunch of middle aged unimaginative musos pretending to be Queen, Oasis or whatever? Still, I’m clearly sailing against the prevailing wind, so what do I know?
 22. One of these events is happening in my local park this summer. Presumably only fake people will be able to attend. Apparently some lucky local bands will have the privilege of supporting said fakers... sheeesh.
 23. I had a (probably very stoned) jam back in the 80s with 2 drummers, 2 bass players (including me) and at least 2 guitarists plus god knows what else... I'm pretty sure it didn't sound great... wasn't life threatening though. Some of the power supplies we used to plug into on the other hand...
