That said, as someone about to enter their 50s later this year, and who has spend about half their working life in the public sector, I certainly won't be retiring in the next 10 years and I doubt any of my public sector colleagues will either...

My handmade KGB bass which I've had from new will be 25 this year. It has buckle rash, lots of little dings on the body and the lacquer on the neck has developed some hairline cracks. I guess I could have taken a little more care of it perhaps, but I’ve never damaged it seriously and it has served me extremely well. I bought it to play and play it I have. If I was fussed I suppose could get it refinished but I’ve grown to quite like its battle scarred appearance. Most importantly, it still plays as well as when I got it...

[/quote] I hate the f***in’ Eagles man… I think impeccably played live music can be fantastic, as long as it retains some energy and verve, otherwise it can be a little dull. I personally prefer it when live bands play around a little with their songs (or at least some of them), rather than simply regurgitating the recorded versions note for note.

When did the concept of fake become desirable, let alone saleable? I remember local band festivals happening in the same park some years ago and jolly good they were too. Why would anyone want to watch a bunch of middle aged unimaginative musos pretending to be Queen, Oasis or whatever? Still, I’m clearly sailing against the prevailing wind, so what do I know?

One of these events is happening in my local park this summer. Presumably only fake people will be able to attend. Apparently some lucky local bands will have the privilege of supporting said fakers... sheeesh.

I had a (probably very stoned) jam back in the 80s with 2 drummers, 2 bass players (including me) and at least 2 guitarists plus god knows what else... I'm pretty sure it didn't sound great... wasn't life threatening though. Some of the power supplies we used to plug into on the other hand...
